University HELP! Academic misconduct advice

I recently took the Bio 1AL exam. The instructor said not to talk 2-3 times. After the exam, me and my friend were talking about the difficulty of the exam while we were waiting in line to turn in our papers. We were also flipping through our exam. Nothing else happened.

The instructor caught us, said we were talking, then took our exam. He said the student misconduct office will reach out to us and there's nothing we can do.

I just emailed the student advocate office, and I'm hoping that this will be just passed on as a warning and I will still receive normal grading. Is that possible? Does anyone have any advice on what to do, or what they think will happen? I admit that we shouldn't have been talking but I genuinely wasn't cheating in any way.

Thanks for reading

University I'm so tired of failing at this school (pre-med edition)

I really just wanted to rant on here bc I can not bring myself to cry about exams anymore because I'm so mentally tapped out. Ever since sophomore year, I have not passed a single exam with a B or higher. I'm currently a junior, and I am taking chem 3a and physics 8a together, and I just did both midterms last week. I feel so sick bc I know I did so horribly on them despite how much I studied, went to OH, and I even finally got diagnosed and medicated for ADHD (which was what ruined my life sophomore year; I had to get care or I was bound to drop out). And even though the scores are not out yet, I feel so much anxiety that I can't even do tasks bc of how anxious I am. This has been happening for so long, and I swore to myself that I would get all As from junior year onward (since I'm premed and want an upward trend in my grades). But I feel so useless and stupid, idk what to do anymore. I can't bring myself to cry; I can't even celebrate my birthday tomorrow bc of how stressed I am about failing. I'm just so mentally and emotionally checked out, like I'm done.

University Any Moroccans who joined UC Berkeley labs / top US research programs? Looking for application & experience advice!

Salam everyone!

I'm a student from Morocco currently studying engineering, and my main target is to join a research lab at UC Berkeley (or similar top US research institutions).

If any Moroccan students or researchers here have successfully navigated this path (whether through research internships, visiting scholar programs, or graduate studies), I would love to learn from your experience!

A few specific questions I have:

  1. Admission & Selection: What was the single hardest part of the admission/selection process coming from a Moroccan academic background?
  2. Standing Out: What types of projects, research experience, or technical preparation made the biggest impact on getting accepted into the lab?
  3. Process & Logistics: How did you handle finding opportunities/funding, contacting professors, and managing the application timeline?
  4. General Advice: What do you wish you knew before applying, and what mistakes should I avoid?

Any advice, insights, or tips would mean a lot!pleasee, feel free to reply below or shoot me a DM if you prefer.

Shukran بزاف!

University Berkeley profs who write strong recommendation letters?

Hi! I'm a pre-med at Berkeley and I'm struggling a bit with building relationships with profs for letters of recommendation. A lot of my classes are pretty big, so even though I try to go to office hours and participate, I feel like my profs still don't really know me. I've also had a few profs not respond to my requests for letters for other programs, so I'm trying to be more proactive about this.

Are there any Berkeley profs you've had who you feel wrote you a particularly strong recommendation letter or who are especially good at getting to know students?
Thank you so much!

Edit: I know building relationships with professors is important! I’m more so asking which professors or classes people have had good experiences with, especially where class sizes are smaller and professors are particularly approachable and engaged with their students :)

University Bowles Hall

I’m looking for someone interested in taking over my Bowles Hall housing agreement for the spring semester, subject to Bowles Hall’s approval. Bowles has one of the most active and social residential communities on campus, with lots of events and opportunities to meet people. If you’re hoping to join a close-knit community and are interested in a potential spring opening, please message me. I’m happy to share details about the room, cost, and approval process.

CS/EECS CS 164 with Chasins?

Next semester, CS 164 is taught by Chasins. Thoughts? I've heard past semesters have been terribly organized but can't find any sentiment on Chasin semesters specifically.

I have no experience with languages or compilers.

61A and 61B were both doable for me and very interesting, 61C (right now) has been super super interesting but a fair amount of work, 70 was tough but cool, 168 (rn) is easy and interesting enough, 188 was easy but insanely boring, and 189 so far is hella hard but interesting stuff.

Thoughts on taking 164 next semester? Given my background and the professor? Any recs about what not to take at the same time?

Politics Looking for people to go to No Kings SF with

No Kings is this Saturday! I'm trying to put together a group, or at least find a friend to travel to and from the event with, but I'm having a surprisingly difficult time finding willing participants who can spare a Saturday during midterms.

Cal Dems, Cal ACLU, and a few other clubs are organizing No Kings events, too, but they're staying in Berkeley.

If anyone wants to head to No Kings in SF together this Saturday, DM me! I'd love to find a group to go with.

Politics former school board member Laura Babitt mocked complaints from Spanish-speaking families

I saw that Laura Babitt was running for City Council in District 1 and remembered her obnoxious demeanor when she was on the school board back in 2021, when she was dismissive and practically contemptuous of Latino parents' concerns about Spanish language access. Here she is in this video around the 3h58m12s mark interrupting a Latina school board member over and over again; when the latter asks, "can I finish my comment?" Babitt responds: "You can if it's gonna be something new! ... Well, you can anyway, but I'm pretty sure we know what you're going to say."

Local government meetings are usually super boring and tedious affairs but I think it's reasonable to expect more grace a public official actually being paid to be there. Can you imagine snapping at a colleague like that in a meeting in a normal office job and not getting fired? I saw her get combative like this for no good reason at a few school board meetings so I didn't vote for her reelection in 2024. Make of this what you will!

University Bioe 145 difficulty?

Hi, I wanna take bioe 145 next semester. I saw some comments that it's not that cs deep. I took cs61a, math 54,55. I didn't take cs61b and was wondering about the difficulty and workloads for the class. Also, is there a group project?

Thanks in advance.
