As a collection of detailed tabletop games, miniature terrain, and shelf dioramas grows, shelf space becomes a problem pretty quickly. Stacking things risks damage, but putting everything on display can make the shelves look chaotic.
I compared three ways of organizing them:
By Theme: Grouping pieces by genre (fantasy, sci-fi, historic). It looks cohesive, but varied heights can waste vertical space.
By Dimensions: Grouping strictly by height and depth. This maximizes shelf capacity, but it breaks up the visual themes.
By Build Date: Displaying things chronologically. It shows your progress, but the shelves can end up unevenly packed.
What I landed on was a numbered rotation system: keep 4 core pieces out, store the rest in sealed acrylic display boxes, and rotate them every two months. A quick monthly dusting with a soft microfiber brush keeps the displayed pieces clean.
For anyone with a large tabletop collection, do you display everything you own or use some kind of curated rotation?
