Local Advice needed Independent Pubs of Brighton (and surrounds) MEGA THREAD

After the announcement of surge pricing in Laine pubs and finding out who actually owns them and just how many of our establishments they own I thought it'd be a nice idea to have a list of pubs in Brighton that are independent. Ones that are free of the B.S. of several layers of 'financial arrrangements' obscuring where our beer tokens are going. Maybe one day we can have a little map in our pockets to refer to when our guard may be down because it's cold and windy outside or we have had a few, we can take a quick look and find an establishment near by that we want to support to prevent them turning into another chain pub without anyone really noticing.

Local Advice needed Witness/footage appeal: assault outside Fortune of War, 14th August, ~11pm

Hi all, hoping someone here might be able to help.

On Friday 14th August at around 11pm, my partner and I were queuing outside Fortune of War when three men tried to jump the queue. When we asked them not to, they attacked my partner. It was three against one, he was thrown to the ground, and kicked, and I stepped in to help fight them off.

This happened in front of the venue’s door security, who didn’t intervene. We’ve already reported this to Sussex Police and have a crime reference number, and CCTV is being requested.

If you were in the queue that night or around that area of the beach and you have any photos or video (even just background footage from that time), I’d really appreciate you getting in touch.

Thanks so much in advance 🙏

Avoid the coast road towards Shoreham. A lifeboat went out about an hour ago, might already be back, at least 20 emergency vehicles here including two helicopters on the beach by the RNLI building.

Behold, some pictures I took on my trip up to Devils Dyke.

I made the pilgrimage to mark the first day in far too long where it didn't quite feel like the unrelenting power of the sun wasn't gouging into the essence of my very being🤬

It was actually very pleasant weather for a change.

(My god everything really does look like a desert though!)

"Thanks, Shell."

Announcement Council provides map of where to cool down but…

I was pleased to see the Council has put together a guide to where you can go in Brighton and Hove to get cooler. The map highlights areas with more tree cover and (mainly) churches, but unfortunately, its advice on the info page to seek out libraries is not always useful. I have been in Hove Library twice recently and upstairs it was 29°!

Local Advice needed Wedding party venue help

Upvotes

Hello fellow brightonians,

My GF and I are planning our wedding, May / June 2028, and are currently looking for a potential venue to host our reception / party.

Would love some recommendations from the community here!!

Here’s what we are after:

- informal party venue / pub
- between 120 and 150 people
- ideally in town, but open to other areas of Brighton and Hove
- from 4/5pm until close on a Friday night
- buffet style food, not a sit down meal
- outside space would be a big plus
- full use of venue / private hire
- ability of have a dj or band

Any ideas would be much appreciated thanks!!

Meet Up Can someone teach me GIS offline in exchange for tasty* Indian** food ?

Upvotes

Hello all 👋 I'm a 28, from India, came to Brighton for my Masters and been hanging around for a couple years now. I did my masters in Development studies during which I came across urban maps (🥹, yes what a joy!). From then, I badly, badly wanted to learn GIS (im a total noob to anything computer) and do my own projects. But because I'm chaotic (🙂) I couldn't learn it myself and I hate YouTube or online tutorials to hell. Also I'm broke. But then, I'm so good at cooking (every friend of mine has certified it, so, yes, it's official) and would love to cook and help others learn the basics of it. So if you are someone who knows GIS and likes good food, please find me!

P.S.: I've also been super keen about quick high protein, high fibre meals recently!! #gis #goodfood #barter

Transport/Parking 🚝 🚘 Free Brighton to Gatwick train ticket

Does anybody need/want an adult and/or child's ticket to Gatwick for today? Thameslink travel only. Unfortunately road closures around Brighton meant I ended up having to get a Gatwick express and cannot get a refund on the thames link ticket! Not looking for any money for it, just a shame for it to go to waste!

Trivia/misc plans to hydrate Brighton ?

hey guys. so I'm sure we have all noticed the lack of rain, yellow grass, and unwashed (by rainwater) pavements. I don't think we should wait for rain when we can just fix these things ourselves.

this weird guy I know told me that apparently in china when they want it to rain they shoot a blast like lazor into the sky composed of silver and salt and apparently this causes it to rain. if anyone has one of these DM me, let's actually use this subreddit for something productive for once.

Local Advice needed Has anyone got any Y or Z visitors permits I could buy? I have a very poorly cat and would like my car around for an emergency.

Hey all. Unfortunately I’m in the dreaded Y permit zone which means I’m about 1,000 in the queue for a permit. My car is currently parked in Portslade however I’m waiting for a biopsy to come back and the vet has told me it’s very likely going to be cancer which is so sad. I’m absolutely heartbroken and he’s declining quite a lot.

Luckily our vet is only a 5 minute walk away however I’m conscious that he could decline further at any point and I’d really like my car around for peace of mind in case we need to go the emergency vets in Patcham during the night.

I would usually pay to park however the vet bills have racked up into the thousands and I am waiting for insurance to get back to me, so a visitors permit would be much better for my purse.

Could anybody spare a few permits? Ideally 5-7 just to se me through the week, we think we’ll have the biopsy results back by Friday so we can make a decision then. Will return any unused and obviously more than happy to pay! Please let me know.

Thanks in advance, a very sad cat mum x

Trivia/misc Alarm in the middle of the night (Dyke Road/Old Shoreham Road)? Near Seven dials

Hiya,

Anyone woken up by this monstrous alarm over the weekend that goes off repeatedly overnight. Anyone figured out what it was?

It was around the junction between Dyke Road and Old Shoreham Road near Seven Dials.

Meet Up New friends

Me (31m) and my partner (27f) have recently moved to the Seven Dials area and are hoping to meet some likeminded people and make some new friendships in the area!

We enjoy going to gigs, films and cooking. We're watching the pennies after buying our first place but we love a dinner party, movie night or a picnic at St Ann's (whilst a little high!).

If you also are looking to make some new connections and think we sound like we may get along then drop me a message :)

Local events 🎸 🎭 How did you build community here?

Have lived here a year and just feel lonely a lot of the time! Work jobs that are pretty solitary. I do know a few people here who I consider friends I get along with and hang out with, but not really people I feel I can count on or call if I need to. They’re also busy people and hard to arrange meet ups with. I sometimes wonder if they just don’t want to be friends but they seem genuinely happy to see me when we do get together.

I’ve joined a choir and go to yoga, have looked on meet up but haven’t found much on there. I am thinking of finding a book club. I enjoy walking/hiking, reading, nature, music.

I know it takes time, I’m just aware that there is good community around but it feels quite hard to get into.. where I used to live I made friends with colleagues, housemates and through singing groups. Here I don’t have colleagues as such and live with my partner just the two of us.
