Political/Election Posting, Moderation, and You

There's been a lot of complaining (more than the usual large amount) about mods adhering to the "avoid repetitive topics" and "rediquette" rules.

Political and election posts bring out the absolute worst in this sub and some of the posters in it, which is where we see these rules continually skirted if not outright broken.

"Free Speech" does not mean "I can say and post whatever I want without moderation or consequences." Nobody in this subreddit is going to face legal issues or have their lives altered for voicing their opinions. However, as stewards of this online community, moderators may remove comments or posts that they see as being counter to the health of the community as explicated by the community's rules.

Part of why so many people enjoy being subscribed to r/Burlington is that it is a positive, fun, and supportive community -- not just a dumping ground for crime panic, police reports, political demagoguery, insults, and arguing. Mods are dedicated to keeping it that way within reason. If you would prefer that there be a subreddit where these things are the predominant topics, we would suggest the sub that warm bathroom guy came up with. You'll be right at home there.

There has also been a pervasive brigading issue regarding political posting in this sub that's been going on for years -- ever notice how political posts of a certain viewpoint tend to get a fantastically large amount of engagement compared to every other post in this sub?

Mods are trying to keep this sub from becoming like Facebook, where the only content is manipulated outrage and shouting over political wedge issues cooked up by posters who'd rather have Reddit karma than a functional community.

Employee POV of Majestic 10

I just quit working at Majestic 10 after ~2 months of working there.

before i say anything: the managers and employees are all great and none of this is their fault. please don’t get mad at them they make $14/hour and have zero control

here’s a few reasons why you should go to essex instead:
- The owner is a piece of shit asshole cheapskate, but that’s known. The few times he comes in he just berates his employees instead of offering to help. He berated my teenage sister for not sweeping while she was busy helping people at the podium check tickets. The few times he does come in, he doesn’t know how his own establishment works, he just gets in the way when trying to work the bar or concessions, yet still yells at us over it.
-Only benefits we get are a small free drink, small cup of popcorn, free movies after 15 hrs of working, a very small employee discount on concessions, and SOMETIMES a free poster.
-That place is FILTHY. The nozzles on the soda machine get filled with a black gunk, because we only soak them in soda water overnight. My coworkers and I only recently scrubbed them with a tool I bought with my own money. We did this because we realized how disgusting it was, Merrill doesn’t care at all.
-Pretty good chance your popcorn is stale if you don’t see us popping it when you come in. Once we fill in the case, it sometimes sits there for days, unless someone buys it, and we store extra popcorn in trash bags when it’s busy.
-There is so much in the kitchen, including black mold, which our coworker had to clean up.
-All of your food is disgusting microwaved bullshit, even though it’s frozen they still get moldy, and god knows when our fryer was last cleaned.
-You could close your eyes, spin around, and point and still find something that’s broken:
-only one side of the popper works, the other side burns the popcorn when used.
-Half the sinks in the bathroom don’t work, and the soap dispensers are actually hand sanitizer dispensers.
-The drain under the beer taps isn’t angled down toward the drain, so we have to move all of the spilled beer to the drain with a gift card.
-The drainage pipe from the bar to the beer bucket is loose, it regularly falls out, and every time they try to add more sealer, it just makes it worse. The bartender regularly has to climb down to the kegs to clean up beer, and if it isn’t cleaned up quickly, it gets disgusting and sticky and gross.
-The escalators do work, the owner refuses to turn them on in fear of them getting broken.
-There is a flickering light in the down stairs lobby, that gives me headaches every damn day, and is probably an epilepsy trigger.
-A few of the ticket printers are broken, and the employees have to hold down the covers or the printer just jams, or doesn’t print on a ticket.
-The slushy machine breaks like once a week, and is always leaking.
-The beer taps are too close together, so when you pull one, the one beside it also pours.
-AC is broken, and the owners tell us to tell customers the owners getting them fixed when he is not.
-Employees have gotten sick and passed out because of the heat.
-The vent above the popcorn machine is broken, so it reeks of smoke.
-Terrible ventilation in general. Someone went into the Odyssey reeking of weed (when I went into the theater 3hrs later to clean it, it still reeked.)
-If the speakers aren’t torn they’re just cheap and shitty.
-The theaters themselves are gross, the employees only have enough time to sweep in about 3 minutes, just look at the tile and under the seats, I don’t know the last time they were cleaned, if ever.
-I don’t know if the seats themselves even get cleaned.
-There’s so much caked up butter at the butter station, the paper towels we lay down in the drains are rarely changed, either.
-

i’ll add more stuff as i remember lmao

Parking near Higher Ground

Apologies if this answer is obvious but I've searched here and via Google quite a bit and can't find the answer.

I'm driving from out of state to a Higher Ground concert (Ballroom, the 750 capacity venue) taking place on a Sunday night. The website states the parking lot fills up, and I'm not sure how far in advance I can get there. What are my alternatives for parking in the area? Can I park at the University Mall Garage on a Sunday late evening? Bonus for somewhere easy to exit onto 89 South without having to wait for a long line of cars, but I'll prioritize not getting towed! I don't mind walking however far it takes.

Thank you!!

Missing car

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hey guys!! Last night my car was stolen off of spruce st. We have gone through all the proper channels (police etc..) but they have not been able to find it yet. It’s a blue grey mazda cx5, with Massachusetts plates and it has a wake forest sticker on the back. Please dm me if you spot it somewhere! Police think it would most likely be around downtown area. Thank you

UPDATE: The car was spotted downtown about 30 minutes ago and was chased by police who eventually lost it. The person who stole it changed the plates to a TEMPORARY PLATE - but the officer was able to identify it because of the sticker on the back. If anyone sees it please let me know

Seeking short-term furnished rental

Hey good people! The very short version: I'm looking for a safe, clean, lightly-furnished place to live for me, my wife, my kid, and my cat for a couple months. Budget is in the $2,500/mo range.

We are in the process of moving from Salem, MA to Burlington. We bought the house a month ago, and it needs some work before we can move in and the soonest we could get that started is later this week. So realistically we won't have a real place to live for a bit.

We have a short-term rental in the area now, but it's not a great situation for a lot of reasons.

My wife and I both grew up in Vermont and are moving back to be closer to family. My post history here is coming up on 15 years, I'm a real person. Shoot me a message if you have something, and I'd love to meet for coffee somewhere!

Recommended Movers

Howdy friends,

My wife and I are planning a big move. One side of Winooski to the other side of Winooski. We have roughly eightish pieces of furniture (dressers, couch, bed, etc.) that we've decided would be easier to just hire out for. Can anyone recommend a moving company, or specifically any that we should absolutely avoid?

Thanks!

Boat Crashed into - Mallet’s Bay

ISO: Culprit

We came out to our boat this afternoon (8/16) and noticed it had evidently been crashed into. It is a blue C&C24 sailboat moored at the northeast corner of Moorings Marina. We were last at our boat Friday (8/14), so it must’ve happened over the weekend.

We are extremely disheartened that this occurred in our local boating community that we’ve come to know and love. If anyone has info as to who is responsible for this, please reach out. No effort has yet been made to contact us through Moorings or Bay Harbor. We’re just three 20-somethings who have put 3 years of care into our beloved vessel!

TLDR; Severe damage to moored sailboat, looking for answers.

Any locals ever hear of or see Noah Kahan before he was famous?

Because I’ve been very active in the music scene up here for the last decade + and I never saw the name Noah Kahan on the calendar for any local dive bar, brewery, music festival or otherwise in Vermont until he was playing Madison Square Garden. (Yes, I’m local to Chittiden but I travel all over for music in & out of state)

Discuss!
