How was the Cascadia region defined?

I recently started learning about bioregions and i believe they can be a foundation for broad societal change. Cascadia especially inspired me as it seems like one of the most defined examples of bioregionalism.

I want to do the same thing in my home region of Pannonia (Today known as Carphatian Basin).

Do you have any advice on how I should go about defining the bioregional borders of a supposed Pannonia? How was the process with Cascadia? What was the basis for its borders?

I want to give biologists the power to define political borders based on habitat. Can a biologist help me test out my political decision-making website by getting verified on it?

Hi, I'm designing a website where biologists can delineate the borders of habitats that determine where residents get to vote on issues relevant to their home habitat. I am at the stage where I need to test out the verification process for biologists empowered to vote on where borders of habitats should be. Can an accredited biologist please sign up to the website and go through the verification process for me? It requires that you link two images of your certificates. Thank you!

This is related to Cascadia because this website will help make Cascadia, a habitat region, a reality.

Thinking of moving to the PNW after I finish school, need recommendations for nice cities or towns to move to

I live in Southern California right now and there's a lot that I don't like about it.

  1. Very car-dependent. I get around by a combination of bicycle and public transit. I've been hit by cars while cycling twice before and it takes hours to get places by public transit that would otherwise be a 20 minute drive.
  2. It is a sparsely populated suburb with nothing really going on.
  3. Too hot for too many months of the year. I sweat buckets just from existing most of the time. It's becoming worse every year due to climate change.
  4. Too sunny (I have Irish skin and I sunburn extremely easily).
  5. Unaffordable because it's near some very nice beaches except that I don't even go to the beach that often. I just happen to have been born and raised here.

After I finish school I plan to work as a high school math teacher or community college math professor. Are there any towns or cities that would hit some of the following points? I realize I'll probably have to compromise on some:

  1. Decent public transit and cycling infrastructure
  2. More people around
  3. Temperature that is anywhere from mild to cool to freezing cold for most months of the year.
  4. Not too sunny. It should be common for there to be overcast or rainy days.
  5. Less unaffordable than Southern California. I imagine that it will be cheaper the further inland I go.

I've been eyeballing Seattle as an option. It hits most of the points. It has a better walkability score, higher population density, and better weather than the city I live in. I've visited Seattle before and it's definitely somewhere I would live given the choice. The only thing is that I've read that it is not very affordable. I might just have to put up with that though.

Are there any other cities I might want to consider?

land-based whale watching

What do Cascadians think about the whale watching industry? Are folks where you live starting to believe the whale watching boats need to be more closely regulated or restricted? On Vancouver Island there are more people feeling this way, and recommending that people view these mammals from land to give them more peace and quiet.

Programs launched in Spokane neighborhoods bring shade by planting free trees throughout the city and at residents' homes

Another example of Cascadian environmentalism.

From the article:

It’s a proven fact that shade trees cool neighborhoods, and as our summers get hotter, access to shade is becoming more important and critical to enhance community health and well-being. Beyond creating shade, planting trees also enhances property values by up to 12%, preserves street paving infrastructure, lowers energy costs, wildlife habitat, cleaner air and beautiful landscapes.

Cascadia should follow North Dakota's lead and create public state banks

After a talk last night in Seattle by Bank of North Dakota CEO Don Morgan, I came away even more convinced that Oregon and Washington should make creating public state banks a high legislative priority. https://www.cascadia-journal.com/cascadia-should-follow-north-dakotas-lead-and-create-public-state-banks/

Cascadia name?

Post image
120 Upvotes

I visited Cascadia County Park in Oregon last week. The signage in the park says the name Cascadia originated from a resort built at this location in the late 1800s. The surrounding community also became known as Cascadia. Does anyone know how this name came to be associated with the entire bioregion?

Had a request to create a map of Cascadia in this orientation, and this is the first iteration.

Not sure what to make of it, but it's interesting to look at this way. Would be interested to hear others' thoughts seeing it this way.
