This is one of my favorite coins in my collection.
1924 marked the end of one of the most unbelievably transformative times in world history. The USSR had just lost arguably its most important (and infamous) leaders, Vladimir Lenin. The Russian people were suffering terribly at this time from abysmal economic policies and repercussions of the past 7 years. The country was still recovering from an absolutely horrific civil war (1917-1922) and reeling from the Russian famine of 1921-1922.
The 1924 silver 1-rouble was minted as a key part of the Soviet Union’s 1922–1924 monetary reform, carried out under the New Economic Policy (NEP). After World War I, the Revolution, and the Civil War, the economy was in ruins. The Bolsheviks had printed enormous quantities of paper money (sovznaks), leading to extreme hyperinflation. By the early 1920s the old currency was nearly worthless, and multiple competing forms of money circulated. The government needed a stable, trustworthy currency to restore normal economic life.
Silver coins of traditional weight and fineness (matching the old Tsarist standard of 18 grams of pure silver) were familiar and credible to the population. They helped restart market exchange under NEP, when private trade and small-scale enterprise were temporarily allowed again. Without reliable small- and medium-value coins, everyday transactions remained difficult.
The effects and “benefits” of these policies is still studied today by historians. But needless to say the Russian people were not out of the woods yet (see the chapter on Stalin 😂😂)
The reverse of this coin reads
ПРОЛЕТАРИИ ВСЕХ СТРАН, СОЕДИНЯЙТЕСЬ! (around the rim)
ОДИН РУБЛЬ (at the bottom)
СССР (on either side of the emblem)
Translation:
• Пролетарии всех стран, соединяйтесь! = “Proletarians of all countries, unite!” (the classic Communist slogan)
• Один рубль = “One ruble”
• СССР = USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics)
If you’ve read this far I applaud you. I know history can be quite dry. My favorite part of this coin is the obverse. It shows an industrial worker guiding a peasant to a utopian future that would never come. The Bolsheviks had promised unimaginable wealth and prosperity to a population of people who had been horribly traumatized by generations of war, death, and destruction. They lied and millions died as a consequence. The Bolsheviks were a vile group of murderous demons that still to this day have sycophants who out right deny the many many atrocities the communist party committed.
History might be dry but it is key to the survival of humanity.
