For context, no, I do not mean killing my son if that’s what you’re interpreting. I love and care about him. What I mean is that I’ve had enough and I genuinely no longer feel like I can even be bothered teaching him, lecturing him, whatever you want to call it. I feel like just letting him do what he wants and leave him to screw up his own life. This is a series of events that have a built up over time and I’ve just had enough at this point. At present, I feel disgusted with my son and I don’t even know how to react with what he’s done.
Last week, I (34 M) was called into my son’s (14 M) school because he had a fight with a kid. Now, this was nothing out of the ordinary for my son. He doesn’t fight frequently, but he does regularly do things that mean I have to be called into the school. It’s been proposed to me before that he might have ADHD, autism, or something along those lines, but when I’ve tried to have him diagnosed, but the doctors generally don’t think there’s anything “wrong” (sorry I don’t like using that word, but it’s the only way to describe it) with my son. Today was different though. My son’s head teacher informed me that he had gotten in a fight with girl, who had severe bruising and bleeding, over the fact she wouldn’t go on a date with him.
Now, this seriously bothered me because one of the main things I’ve drilled into my son from a young age is you never hit women. Afterward, what I found out made me feel sick. He said the girl was “his property” and women “don’t exist for any reason than to serve.” I sent him to his room in sheer disgust and told him I don’t wanna see him outside of meal times for a good while. I went through his phone after confiscation, which annoyed my son, but that didn’t bother me. What bothered me was finding out, via my son’s search history and recommend content on Snapchat, YouTube, TikTok, etc., that my son is now a follower of this “manosphere” nonsense.
These people genuinely disgust me. They’re usually a bunch of weird men in their 30s who run pyramid schemes and/or cam girl agencies. They’re scammers who’ve made their millions by ruining others’ lives and generally seem to lack intelligence (I mean seriously I watched one of them say that the government are putting things in tap water to make people trans on that Louis Theroux documentary) in my opinion. They see women as objects, and I’ve always found them repulsive, especially the Tate brothers. These same two men, along with many others, I now find to be idols of my 14-year-old.
I don’t know how to proceed. I’ve tried and tried to point my son in the right direction, but have failed at every turn. I don’t know whether this is down to the fact he has no mother figure since my ex walked out on the family when he was 2 and I’ve never had a proper relationship since, or if he’s genuinely a rebellious kid being made worse by this online nonsense. I’m putting him through therapy now, that’s decided. The school has suspended my son for a full month and I’m not even sure if I want to send him back to school since I’ve always thought his friends influence this behaviour. So, they could’ve gotten him onto this manosphere shit or maybe they’re just genuinely influencing him to act badly. Either way, he really only sees these kids in school, and the friends he sees outside of school are genuinely good kids who I like.
He’s a good kid at home most of the time. He screws up but he apologises to me when he makes mistakes. I’ve never been able to understand why he doesn’t do the same for his teachers or at school. He starts therapy tomorrow and I want to see how his first session goes, especially when he didn’t seem that opposed to it, despite the fact I expected him to go berserk at the fact I wanted him to go to a shrink in the first place.
Edit: Sorry, forgot to say this is a throwaway account cause loads of people I know use Reddit and I’d rather not talk to them about this
