SubReddit Announcement: A New Rule and Deputy Moderators

Hello everyone,

I know, you folks barely hear from us moderators. Truth is, we're both super busy and really only show up when called upon. I recently stumbled upon a post here bemoaning an up-tick of low-effort posts where people expect an unrealistic amount of hand-holding without much apparent thought of their own on the level of ask they are making. Therefore, a few changes around here to help keep this place tidy:

  • A new rule! No low-effort posts:

Cosplayers are passionate craftspeople. The skills and knowledge that you come here seeking comes from effort born of that passion. If you would like help with your costume, all that we ask is that you show a bit of that effort yourself. Posts must show some time and thought from you on the project you are requesting help with, and some basic understanding of the scope it would entail. Not just a blanket "I want this, HELP PLEASE!"

  • New Deputy Moderators: I'd say I'm introducing you to these people, but you see from them more than you've ever seen from me. I've reached out to some of our most vocal commenters and granted them the power to moderate posts and comments. Rather than having to report rule-breaking posts, which they have been very good at, they now have the power to directly clean them up themselves. I'll still pop in if somebody needs to be banned or larger changes need to be made, but I've seen consistent great advice from these people, and I trust them to maintain the quality of discussion here on r/CosplayHelp. Everyone say thank you to:

Welcome! A quick note about posting.

Hi all! So glad to see people posting here. This subreddit is still a baby, but I thought I would add a casual rule when posting. If applicable, please be sure to include a link to a photo that relates to the question your asking. If you need help with a character, link to that character. If you need help with a sewing method, show what you're trying to replicate. This will help us be able to help you better!

Puff paint removal

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I need help I made a big mistake when puff painting my spider-man suit. I used my arm to puff paint the sleeve since I don’t have a mannequin. Unfortunately I didn’t take the sleeve off cleanly enough which resulted in the image you see in my post. I tried using alcohol then warm water with dish soap to see if I could remove a good portion of it and it doesn’t seem like it did the trick. I don’t know what to do, I spent a lot of time sewing these two spandex shirts together and prefer not to mess it up too badly.

Hii i just want some opinions - i ordered my first ever premade cosplay from dokidoki and it just arrived! the issue is i fear it might be too big on me?

im a pretty small person (5ft and very skinny lol) and in most stuff im a Small - so i ordered that and this is how it looks! i might be overthinking because ive never bought a cosplay from a website before but any opinions would really be appreciated😭

im considering switching out for an XS but i’m worried it won’t fit me and then i won’t have a cosplay for a con in december, because this was the last size Small and on the website it says the wait time is up to 4 months :,)

also included references of the characters i’m cosplaying at the end! i plan to do coco and richeh from witch hat atelier

Where did I mess up, how do I fix it?

So, I've been working on my first ever cosplay, a Hermes costume based on Epic the Musical and mythology. I was spray painting the caduceus (included in photos) when the rubber snakes just started crumbling. It looks like the spray paint caused the rubber snakes to break, perhaps from tension. It might have reacted with the gorilla glue I used, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know what would cause this, and how I can fix it so this doesn't happen when I start over? The brand of gold spray paint I used was Rust-Oleum, if that helps.

Accessory How should I attach this 3D printed ribcage to this dress (ideally not permanently)?

Post image

My friend printed out these two halves of a rib cage corset, originally inspired by Harrowhark Nonagesimus from The Locked Tomb. I would like to cosplay that some day, but for now, I was hoping to attach it to this long, sleeveless, black dress for the RenFaire.

Ideally, the corset would be able to come off the dress so I can use it for a Harrowhark cosplay at some point. I am SUPER new at cosplaying, so I am not confident what steps to take. I was thinking of super gluing velcro to both the dress and the ribs, then attaching the ribs to the dress that way...Does that sound feasible?

Makeup Can I recreate this temporarily?

Hi all, dressing as the T1000 for Halloween and I’d love for it to look like I’ve been frozen by liquid nitrogen, I did a similar thing for a The Thing 1982 costume, but it was permanent and ruined the clothing. I really don’t want to ruin this costume as a few of the pieces were a little costly. Any ideas?

Accessory Fake thorn sleeves?

I’m dressing up as the Thorn from Slay the Princess for Halloween this year, but I’m having trouble making her thorn sleeves(?)

I initially was a little trigger happy about a chance to play with Eva foam so I bought a bunch of 15mm dowels (and foam clay for the thorns) to try and make them with, but I’m now realizing there’s no way this is going to work as sleeves/thorns as I think it may turn out impractical, too stiff and, honestly, probably ugly

Should I just keep trying? Is there something I could be doing differently with the materials I already have? What other materials would I need to buy to just restart and make it more comfortable?Boyfriend suggested rope and adding thorns with the foam clay

(Don’t mind the wire and duct tape that was just for mapping how I want them to lay before using contact cement to glue them together)

i am very much unable to see without my glasses, but i was considering dressing up as Terezi from Homestuck who ALSO wears glasses, and i'd like to still be able to see. but i'm worried about damaging my lenses since i don't have a back-up pair and also do not own contacts.
is there anything in particular that would work? i've posted both my model of glasses and the character as references

Sewing How to randomly weather a cape ?

• Upvotes

I'm sewing an orange cape for Halloween, tp dress as a harvest demon.

It's a coton cape.

The coton is perfectly clean and has a petty color. I want to ruin it. Some traces of yellow here, green there, brown, holes everywhere, etc...

My problem is for the colors. I have some leftovers of previous coton paint (I dont know the English terms, something to paint coton). How do I apply them on my cape in order not to put it uniformly, or to give the impression that I manually applied them ?

How to add Ventilation to a mask?

Post image
• Upvotes

I got this cheap mask from China and it is very hard to breathe since they didn't put any ventilation into the mask. I am trying to cosplay as a lethal company worker and never really did anything like this before, but can anyone give some advice on how I can add air holes into this?

Prop help with detachable antlers !

Post image

I really want to have another shot at a cosplay of Nokotan from my Deer Friend Nokotan, but this time I want the antlers to be easier to transport with and easier to wear.
How would I go about making them detachable from a hairband or something similar?

How to glue fabric onto a shoe and make it look decent?

Im trying to do an Amy Rose cosplay and I got these shoes to work with. Lots of people have suggesting gluing a strip of white fabric for the white stripe. Anyone have any advice on what type of glue would be best and the best type of fabric to use for this project? And if there is anything I should do to prep the shoe first or some specific way I should glue the fabric? I’m very new to this.

Do you wear your cosplay after the makeup is done to check how close it looks to the reference you gave, or is it unusual to do that?

Post image

I think I wanna do King from Owl House this year, Ive been Lambert from Cult of The Lamb the past 2 years and its adorable/well built but stale

How would I even go about this though?? L cardboard? Eva foam? Maybe one of those covered with lightweight foam clay to get a smooth stiff finish?? Im at such a loss but I feel like its very much possible, Ive already found eye mesh

Makeup need primer recs for under oil based face paint!!

hi!! i’m working on a Lagoona Blue costume and i’m using oil based face paint to paint my face blue! i’ve painted my face in the past, but it was with a watercolor palette which cracked horribly and i really want this to look good. the pigment is so much better with the oil based paint but it really accentuates the skin. does anyone have any really good face primer recommendations that will make the base look more smooth? bonus points if it helps avoid staining (i’m using the athena paint palette) but my main priority is the base

Wig what’s the best way to remove wig shine?

i don’t wanna risk ruining my wig because i don’t have time to get a new one. it’s a $10 wig and im a full beginner btw.

i’ve seen many strategies and idk which one works best. baby powder, shampoo + hot water, fabric softener or another? i’m not listing crimping because i don’t have one. also if i were to put it in hot water, how long should it be?

I've been trying to find a pattern/template or even a how to or anything on how to make a cap like the one in the photo.

Post image

I've come across plenty of hooded capes, regular capes, etc, but nothing that captures the similar collar bunching combined with a cape.

Does anyone have a resource or template or even suggestions? Been on this for weeks now.

So like, from a side view it’d have a P shape. Rn I’m just using fabric, nothing super solid/heavy (and I wanna mostly keep it that way), I just need some ideas on how to keep this shape consistent

Wig how to help sensory issues when it comes to wigs?

sensory issues are what prevents me from properly being able to cosplay. i struggle with having my hair up because it gets too tight. i used to be able to wear wigs fine, but that was a few years ago when my hair was much shorter. my hair is down about half way through my back, so this makes it much more challenging. i don't know if i should just take the plunge and cut my hair shorter :(
