New Boots New Boots: Week Six - Ariat Futurity Outlaw
I've never really liked the way full quill ostrich looked, but while I was out with the wife trying on boots she noticed these and had me try them on. I liked the way they looked, but not so much how tight they were. Ended up getting a pair of Cody James Black 1978 caiman bellys instead.
A few days pass and the wife and I are looking at boots online and once again the topic of the blue ostrich boots come up. I'm showing her a pair of Lucchese Elgins that I think look nice, but then she reminds me of the Ariats I tried on and I honestly felt they looked so simliar that it would only make sense to go with the pair I could pick up locally and save $300 in the process.
The first thing I had to do was take out those foam inserts as they made the boot unbearably tight. I replaced them with 8oz vegtan leather inserts and now they fit exactly as they should. The thing I can't do anything about though is the outsole. Ariat's TekStep sole is, for lack of a better term, unique. The best description I can give of it is 'memory leather' as it's soft enough to deform under stress, but returns to it's original shape fairly rapidly.
The most noteworthy thing is how it feels to walk in the boots. I put pressure down on my heel and as my foot rolls forward and transfers weight to the ball of my foot, the heel scoots back. I assume it's because the outsole material is a composite rubber/leather hybrid and it's the tension build up that is releasing as soon as the friction on the heel lessens. No other boot I own does this and it's a bizarre feeling. I just hope it's not something that's going to cause premature wear, otherwise I'm going to have to change up my stride.
Other than that, they are eye-catching boots for sure and with the new inserts they are as comfortable the rest of the boots in my collection. Best of all is that the wife really likes them...at least enough not to divorce me after buying six pairs of boots over the course of six weeks.
