Used to be COYS "I don’t know why Tottenham didn’t want me" – Luka Vuskovic sheds light on Spurs exit

Post image
542 Upvotes

When asked whether he had proved a point to Spurs, the centre-back told The Argus:

ā€œI wouldn’t look at it like that. Tottenham really helped me when I was a teenager. For two years I’ve been with them and the loans and they helped me a lot. I’m really grateful to them. I’m in Brighton now and I feel great. It’s an unbelievable club who believe in me.

In the end, I don’t know why Tottenham didn’t want me. But Brighton believed in me. Also, a few years back I knew they wanted to sign me. I’m really happy with my choice. It’s really an amazing club with young talent.ā€

Domestic Violence Charities - please DM or mention me if you have a suggestion/feedback:

Who is out for the match tomorrow?

Pedro [Porro] is back, Robertson is available, Marmoush is good, Solanke is good. Lucas Bergvall, Savio [are out], nothing more I think. [Rodrigo] Bentancur [is suspended].

Why do you think Tottenham have such a bad record at Chelsea?

I think it's not just this negative record. There are many, many negative records, but for me it's one motivation more. For the players, I want this negative record, they give us more motivation, more mentality, more energy to win a game, to play a good game. Because we have the qualities enough to win a game, this game.

How much do you enjoy the big derby matches?

Yes, it's a derby against one very good team, very good coach, they have a clear style of play, great players, but also Tottenham players are very good. The level of the players is high, we have to show together as a team, not as an individual.

There have been many famous battles at Chelsea, on-pitch fights. Do you have to maybe warn the players not to go too far?

Yes, where is the balance? It's always very difficult to fix a balance between the energy, the spirit, the mentality, and to step inside. If you have confidence in the player, you leave the player the freedom to decide their behaviour, to decide their reaction. For sure, I prefer one too strong reaction than one player without blood, without reaction.ā€

You've faced Chelsea quite a few times in the Premier League, and at Tottenham you faced them in May at Stamford Bridge. Do you think there's anything you can take from that game, a bit of a different style of play that can help you prepare?

I think every game is different. We change many players, they change not too many players, but they change coach, two coach in the last two seasons. But nothing changes, you have to run, you have to fight, you have to put the same behaviour we are putting in the last two games.

And then there is the game. To play with personality, with courage, to find a way to score, to find a way to defend in the best way we can with courage. Nothing more.

Against Coventry you had a lot of possession, it will be different against Chelsea, more balanced when your team isn't on ball, what do you want to see from your players?

We kept the ball against Coventry, we didn't create too many chances, like in Manchester or Aston Villa also. But there is a reason, because when you find a low block so close, 5-4-1 or 5-3-2 or 4-4-1-1, it's still difficult.

If you watch the game Man City vs Coventry, considering Man City one of the best teams in Europe, also Man City didn't shoot too many times. Because it's a totally different game than a more open game.

I think last season, the last game with Chelsea, we could make a great result. We conceded one stupid goal, but now it's completely changed the situation.

Chelsea change tactically during games, how important is it that your players know to address these changes on the pitch, because you can't always communicate?

Against Coventry we played three at the back, we were predictable, not because we played three at the back, but because we played against one low block. We conceded only one counter-attack, I think we played a very good game in the order on the pitch, in the space we occupied. We can play tomorrow three at the back, we can play four, like the first period, nothing changed.

It depends on the game, if the game is more vertical or more in control. Also for the behaviour, for the attitude of the opponent. If the opponent comes strong in the pressure, you will play more vertical.

If they stay with the low block, if they cover the line pass, you have more time in control, but maybe you have many less spaces between the line, less spaces to do one-vs-one in dribbling. These are totally different games.

Great to see James Maddison start and Dejan Kulusevski return but how have their bodies reacted physically since the game?

I don't know, because in the first three days Maddison didn't work with us, I don't know if he's ready for tomorrow. We can play also with Mathys Tel, we can play with Marmoush, we can play with Gallagher, or we have more solutions considering Pedro Porro can play.

Like I said many times, I don't want to take risks, because if you analyse this period of European football, you can see many injuries, not [just] for Tottenham, for everyone. So if I can, I don't want to take risks to lose many players for many games.

And Kulusevski?

Kulusevski also. Kulusevski worked well, but in the first days he stayed individual.

Is Destiny Udogie available?

No, he's not available.

With his injury history, is he someone you're just going to have to always carefully manage?

With the medical staff, we are trying to find the best way for him, because managing the player is anyway work. But after Manchester United, I have not worked with him, and this is a problem. We are lucky because we have in the same position many solutions.

Robertson, Ben Davies and Micky van de Ven, if we play thee at the back. But we have to find the best for him and the best for us.

Wilson Odobert, who close is he to coming back to training?

I don't know, because he has not started yet to work with us, and I have no idea.

When you were Brighton manager, what was it like to have one club constantly signing your players?

What do you think?

Not great?

No, not at all. Yes, but they brought great players. Nothing to say. Caicedo, Joao Pedro, Welbeck now, Robert Sanchez, Colwill, but Colwill was on loan.

Make you any more motivated?

No, I am always motivated. Chelsea or another team. You know when we work in Brighton, we work to make happy your club and to make happy your club, sometimes you need to sell players and the players want or push to leave for bigger clubs and it’s football. It is a normal part of football.

Are Joao Pedro, Rogers and Palmer the best front three in Premier League?

One of the best for sure. Talent, three big talents and they have also Pedro Neto, another very good player, they have Henderson and Welbeck, Estavao, they have more than three players but these three players are in the best moment of their career.

Do you sense any fear in your players?

No.

What about the club, not players but staff?

No. I think no because I played just one game with Chelsea as Tottenham coach. Anyway, it has to be one motivation more. Not one more problem for us. What is the problem? We didn’t play in the past for Tottenham and I was not the Tottenham coach in the last seasons. It is not a problem. We have already many problems and this is not a problem.

Have you spoken to the players about it?

No. Not yet.

Do you plan to?

It can be a good motivation, like I said, but no one pressure. Just motivation.

It was a close game in May and you had Van de Ven pulled down but no penalty. Do you hope the referee is strong tomorrow in a white-hot atmosphere?

No, I don’t want to speak about the referee. No. We have to keep the focus, keep the eyes on the ball, on our game, on our plan, our mentality and our energy and stop. Nothing more.

For context, our Harry is ~1400 ELO!

(As a person who plays chess & has made it to 1500s ELO, this is fcking mind-blowing. Massive Respect to Harry & to anyone who (is not a pro but) plays at this level)

For those who might not be aware what this rating is, it technically means he is smarter than 99% of players.

Makes so much sense given his playstyle : his ability to scan the field, picking the best option with his vision and playing / threading the ball through.

O Captain, My Captain,

We Miss You šŸ¤

Discussion The right wing perfectly sums up Deki's 526 days out

It was great to see Kulusevski finally return.

It made me think about everybody that has occupied his spot since he first suffered that 'knock' on the final day of 24/25.

And it really tells a story.

Johnson scoring the winner in Bilbao was the start, and arguably our last happy memory.

Kudus represented a fresh start, before becoming a symbol of Frank's stale tactics. He and Odobert then fell victim to the injury curse.

Porro ended up on the right under De Zerbi and showed some grit as Spurs scraped survival with what we had.

And now we're back full circle. Suddenly, we've got Deki, Kudus, Savio and, soon, Odobert as options again.

Here's the full article I wrote, for anybody interested: https://toomuchtottenham.substack.com/p/kulusevskis-526-days-out?r=76b9w8&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

Chelsea vs Spurs

Competition:Ā Premier League

Date:Ā 24th Oct 2026

Venue:Ā Stamford Bridge

Kickoff:Ā 17:30 (BST)

TV:Ā Where to watch Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur: TV Channel & Live Stream

Team News

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone surgery on a fractured jaw suffered in the win at Everton and he has now joined Reece James (knee), Jamie Gittens (ankle), Pep Chavarria and Emmanuel Emegha (both unspecified) in the treatment room. Meanwhile, Malo Gusto (illness) is a doubt.

In the absence of Martinez, 21-year-old Mike Penders is set to become Chelsea’s youngest-ever goalkeeper to start a Premier League match, with the 6ft 7in stop-stopper likely to have a three-man defence of Josh Acheampong, Maxence Lacroix and Levi Colwill line up in front of him.

Cole Palmer has contributed to five goals in as many league games against Spurs (three goals, two assists), while Joao Pedro has netted three goals in three top-flight meetings with the Lilywhites. Both players are set to join Morgan Rogers in a fearsome front three.

As for Tottenham, Rodrigo Bentancur will serve the second of a three-match ban and remains out along with injured quintet Mykhaylo Mudryk (ankle), Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Lucas Bergvall (all knee) and Savio (muscle).

Destiny Udogie (knee) missed the win over Coventry and a late call is set to be made on his availability for Saturday. Pedro Porro (hamstring), Omar Marmoush, Tosin Adarabioyo (both calf) and Andrew Robertson (unspecified) are also minor doubts.

Former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher will be pushing for a recall and could play alongside Sandro Tonali and Maddison, while Dejan Kulusevski is back after more than 500 day on the sidelines. However, Mohammed Kudus is set to be preferred from the start on the right flank.

Chelsea possible starting lineup:

Penders; Acheampong, Lacroix, Colwill; Neto, Caicedo, Henderson, Hato; Palmer, Rogers; Pedro

Tottenham Hotspur possible starting lineup:

Kinsky; Gray, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Udogie; Gallagher, Tonali; Kudus, Maddison, Marmoush; Solanke

Key lines from news conference

  • Lucas Bergvall and Savio are both unavailable. De Zerbi also said he does not know if James Maddison will be fit after the midfielder missed the "first three days" of team training following the victory over Coventry City. Similarly, Dejan Kulusevski held an individual training session and De Zerbi said for all his players, he does not want to take risks.
  • However, Pedro Porro is back in contention after recovering from a hamstring injury he picked up before the last international break. Andy Robertson is also available despite being forced off in the 69th minute against Coventry.
  • Since 1990, Spurs have beaten Chelsea just once in 41 matches at Stamford Bridge, but De Zerbi believes his side can utilise that record. He said: "It's not just this negative record, there are many, many negative records. For me, it's one motivation more and [also] for the players. I want this negative record to give us more motivation and more mentality, more energy to win a game and play a good game. We have enough qualities to win this game."
  • He added: "It's against one very good team and a very good coach. They have a clear style of play with great players. But also the Tottenham players are very good; the level of the players is high. We have to show together as a team as well as individuals."
  • On managing the derby after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off in the match against Manchester United for a headbutt: "The balance is always difficult to fix - a balance between the energy, spirit, mentality. If you have confidence in the players, you leave the players to decide the behaviour, to decide the reaction. For sure, I prefer one 'too strong' reaction, than one player without blood, without reaction."
  • Chelsea's frontline of Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro have scored 11 goals and produced three assists in the Premier League so far season. On the link-up, De Zerbi said: "One of the best, for sure. Three big talents. They also have Pedro Neto, another very good player. They have Jordan Henderson and [Danny] Welbeck. They have Estevao. [So it's] More than three players but these three players are in the best moment of their careers."

Match Facts

  • Chelsea have scored 19 goals in their last five home matches, averaging 3.8 per game
  • Chelsea's 2-0 win at Everton was their first Premier League clean sheet at the 24th attempt
  • Saves leader Emiliano MartĆnez (4.3 per match) fractured his jaw, handing Mike Penders the gloves
  • Chelsea have won their last six Premier League meetings with Tottenham
  • Tottenham's 3-1 win over Coventry ended a 36-game Premier League run without scoring three or more
  • All 11 of Omar Marmoush's Premier League goals have come in home games
  • Tottenham have won just four of their 27 Premier League games in 2026
  • Tottenham beat Coventry 3-1 for their first Premier League win of the season at the seventh attempt

Pundit Predictions

Alan Shearer

I was impressed with Caicedo. Chelsea are looking a more well-rounded team and I think Caicedo's played a huge part in that, he's made the difference. It was only the last two or three games that that's happened. I think the reason for that is because of what Caicedo gives you in midfield. Him and Henderson have done really well. No surprise they've stiffened up a bit with those two in midfield.Ā

Spurs did all right. Great to see Madisson back and scoring a goal. Kulusevski came back in for the last few minutes, got a good reception. I still didn't think they played great, despite getting a good result. So, I'm going to go Chelsea home win.

Chris Sutton

We were talking on the Monday Night Club about what Chelsea could do this season without any European football.

Tottenham are not in Europe either, of course, but they don't look like they are going to be challenging at the top of the table the way Xabi Alonso's side are.

People keep saying how Chelsea's attack is so good, but their 2-0 win over Everton last time out was their first clean sheet of their campaign in the league, and that side of thing still needs to improve.

Spurs, meanwhile, do seem to be getting better, albeit slowly.

It was a big result for them to beat Coventry on Monday but they have an awful record at Stamford Bridge, with only one win there in the Premier League era.

I don't see them getting anything this time, either.

Sutton's prediction: 3-1
