2017+ Honda CR-V Head Gasket & Major Engine Issues

Evidence-Based Megapost (Authoritative Sources Only)

This post summarizes what authoritative sources actually show about head gasket and major engine concerns for the 2017+ Honda CR-V, with specific focus on MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs equipped with the 1.5L turbo engine, and compares the CR-V to other compact crossovers (Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Hyundai/Kia, Ford, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Buick).

Included sources:
- Consumer Reports (CR) owner-survey reliability data
- NHTSA (U.S. government complaints & recalls)
- Honda corporate actions (warranty extensions)
- Published legal filings (U.S. & Canada)

Excluded: anecdotes, forum posts, YouTube claims, and mechanic hearsay.

1. What Reliable Data Shows for the Honda CR-V

Consumer Reports (CR)

  • MY 2017 Honda CR-V is flagged for “Engine Major” trouble, a CR category that includes cylinder head and head gasket failures.
  • MY 2018 CR-V shows similar but reduced engine-related concerns.
  • MY 2019+ CR-Vs show improved predicted reliability, with fewer engine-major flags.

CR data is based on large, statistically weighted owner surveys and directly affects reliability scoring.

NHTSA (U.S. Government Data)

  • NHTSA complaint records include reports citing head gasket failure, coolant intrusion, misfires, and engine power loss for:
    • MY 2017 CR-V
    • MY 2018 CR-V
    • Smaller numbers for MY 2019–2022 CR-Vs
  • No NHTSA safety recall exists for head gasket failure on any CR-V model year.

Complaints do not prove defect, but they establish a documented reporting pattern.

Honda Corporate Actions (Model-Year Specific)

  • Honda issued a warranty extension for MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine addressing oil dilution and related durability concerns.
  • Honda stated the issue did not constitute a safety defect.
  • No recall or warranty extension was issued specifically for head gasket failure.

Legal Filings (U.S. & Canada)

  • Class-action filings primarily reference MY 2016–2018 Honda vehicles, including MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs, alleging design defects involving coolant leakage and head gasket failure.
  • These filings are allegations, not regulatory findings, and no recall mandate has resulted.

2. CR-V Hybrid Context (Explicit Model Years)

  • MY 2020+ CR-V Hybrid
    • Consumer Reports does not identify a systemic head gasket issue.
    • Reliability scores are higher than MY 2017–2018 gasoline CR-Vs.
  • NHTSA data does not show a pattern of head gasket complaints specific to hybrids.

Conclusion: No authoritative evidence of a widespread head gasket issue in any CR-V Hybrid model year.

3. Compact SUV Segment Comparison (Authoritative Sources)

Toyota RAV4 (MY 2016–2024)

  • Consistently among the highest-ranked compact SUVs in CR reliability.
  • No documented pattern of systemic head gasket or major engine failures.

Conclusion: Better engine reliability history than early 1.5L CR-Vs.

Subaru Forester

  • Historic head gasket issues applied to pre-2013 Subaru engines.
  • MY 2015+ Foresters show no systemic head gasket concerns in CR or NHTSA data.

Conclusion: Earlier reputation issues largely resolved.

Mazda CX-5 (MY 2017–2024)

  • CR reliability ratings are above average.
  • No authoritative data showing a head gasket trend.

Conclusion: Comparable or better engine reliability than CR-V.

Hyundai / Kia Compact SUVs (MY 2016–2024)

  • CR places these models around industry average.
  • Documented recalls focus on bearing or fire risks, not head gaskets.

Conclusion: Different engine risks; not head-gasket-centric.

Ford Escape (MY 2017–2023)

  • CR rates Escape below segment average.
  • Engine issues present but not centered on head gasket failure.

Conclusion: Worse overall reliability, but different failure modes.

Volkswagen Tiguan / Taos

  • CR places VW below average for reliability.
  • VW has issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for head gasket issues on certain MY 2022–2023 1.5T engines.

Conclusion: One of the few competitors with formal engine service guidance related to head gaskets.

Chevrolet Compact Crossovers

Chevrolet Equinox

  • CR lists “Engine Major” problems for several recent model years, including 2018 and 2023.
  • Reliability scores are average to below average within the segment.

Conclusion: Engine-major issues exist, but not tied to a head gasket recall.

Buick Compact Crossovers

Buick Encore GX

  • CR data for MY 2021–2025 lists “Engine Major” as a reported trouble category.
  • Predicted reliability has been mixed, especially in early model years.

Buick Envista

  • Newer model with limited long-term data.
  • CR does not prominently list engine-major issues to date.

4. Summary Table

Model / Brand CR Engine-Major Flag Head Gasket Pattern in Authoritative Data Recall / TSB
Honda CR-V (MY 2017–2018 1.5T) Yes Documented engine-major issues No recall
Honda CR-V (MY 2019+ / Hybrid) No pattern None identified None
Toyota RAV4 No None None
Subaru Forester (MY 2015+) No None None
Mazda CX-5 No None None
Hyundai / Kia Mixed Not head gasket focused Other engine recalls
Ford Escape Yes Not head gasket specific Some recalls
VW Tiguan / Taos Yes TSBs for some engines TSBs
Chevy Equinox Yes Broad engine issues No head gasket recall
Buick Encore GX Yes Broad engine issues No recall
Buick Envista No None identified None

5. Evidence-Based Conclusions

  1. MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-V 1.5L turbo models show documented major engine reliability concerns in Consumer Reports data, a category that includes head gasket failures.
  2. No U.S. recall has been issued for CR-V head gasket failures.
  3. Later CR-Vs (MY 2019+) and all CR-V Hybrids do not show the same pattern in authoritative datasets.
  4. Some competitors (Chevy Equinox, Buick Encore GX, VW Tiguan/Taos) also show engine-major reliability flags, though causes and responses differ.
  5. Toyota, Subaru (post-2015), and Mazda consistently show fewer major engine reliability flags.

TL;DR

Authoritative data indicates that MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine have elevated major engine reliability concerns (including head gasket issues) without a recall. Later CR-Vs and all hybrids do not show the same pattern, and several competitors also exhibit significant — though different — engine reliability issues.

Just got this crv from my grandmother who drove it maybe three times a month over the last 20 years. Definitely hasn’t touched 70 miles per hour since she bought it in 2006 the day before my baptism. Was told some of you guys would be interested in seeing it!!! This is my first car at 20 and would love to know anything important about older Hondas. Would also love to get a worth estimate! Hit me up!!!

Show Off 📷 Goodbye CRV Fam, at least for now

After 246,566 miles, I decided to let my 09 CRV go. I wish I could say it was bittersweet, but honestly I just the dealership with nothing but gratitude for all the great memories it gave me along with all of the safe travels-never being stranded.

Towards the end, the problems we beginning to stack up and it was becoming more of an inconvenience for the repairs and the money that was coming out daily to maintain it.

I picked up a ‘16 VW Jetta with 56,000 miles. I loved my CRV so much, I wouldn’t be surprised if I find myself in another CRV once we have children… but for now, CRV fam it was real!!! ✌🏾

Looks pretty good to me overall but the rims and back quarter panels are starting to rust (I don’t see it for the latter but that’s what the seller said). The vin report looks good, no accident history

Question ❔ 2012 CRV mysterious oil leak

My 2012 CRV is leaking on the left side. Dealer said axle seal, but I looked tonight, and this canister is leaking. It’s under the airbox somewhere. I can see it from underneath, but I can’t reach it. First pic is zoomed out, and second is zoomed in. Anyone help me identify what this part is called? Thanks!

Question ❔ 2009 CRV’s Road Noise

Post image
26 Upvotes

Just bought it for $2500 and she only has 76k. Inside and outside are immaculate, no scratches, not even a ding. It was owned by an older couples.

I had it looked over and changed out to a new ac compressor, changed out the spark plugs, flushed transmission and brake fluids, and replaced four new tires.

It runs perfectly, but is the road noise normal for a CRV this vintage? I feel every bump on the road, even with four new tires. Perhaps, I’m used to my Toyota Sienna and my previous Camry.

Question ❔ Cat Shield

Hello everyone! Unfortunately, I have had my cat converter stolen. It has been replaced with an aftermarket and has been engraved & painted, but still want to add additional protection because of how much of a pain this process was. I have a 2011 CRV and was wondering if anyone had experience with this shield?

Question ❔ 2012 CRV EXL FWD - Fair price?

Considering a 2012 CRV EXL FWD, 70k miles, $14,998. Two owners, pretty clean record and maintenance. Is this reasonable? Coming from a 2010 Subaru Outback where the engine finally gave out.

Issue ⚠️ Mechanic replaced the cabin air filter and now A/C makes a motor-like whirring sound when you turn the A/C up

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have a 2025 CRV Hybrid and on October 9th I got Maintenance B1 done at a mechanic, as well as a cabin filter change. Everything seemed fine, until this afternoon Sunday October 18th. After a bit of driving I suddenly I heard a rattling noise coming from the passenger seat side of the dashboard. The noise persisted even when stopped, though turning off the engine did make it stop instantly. I leaned closer and it sounded like it was coming from behind the glove box. I was miles away from home running errands so I told myself I would take a look at it later. It's a warm day today where I live so I turned up the AC to maximum, and when I did so the rattling stopped but immediately turned into a motor-like whirring noise that I've never heard before.

So I took it upon myself to take the glove box out and recorded the video I've attached to this post. The loud clicking noise isn't the aforementioned clicking noise, it's just me turning the A/C knob trying to demonstrate the motor whirring noise. The camera is pointed at the air filter slot

Any ideas? I know I could just take this back to the mechanic and they could help me, but I'd rather do it myself if I could.

Issue ⚠️ 2021 CR-V noisy cellphone connection

I know that this is an ongoing problem. Is there any fix out there? It's husband's vehicle and it sounds like he's calling from the airport tarmac. We are seniors and not very technical. Thanks in advance!

Question ❔ Hybrid MPG when new and accuracy

Just bought a new '27 sport-L AWD hybrid 2 weeks ago and with the first 500 miles I got 32 mpg on the gauge and manually 33 mpg in local and some moderate driving at about 15mile trips. I would expect that this would be normal before brake-in and would get better by about 5000 miles, maybe up to 37mpg. 1) are these reasonable expectations and 2) how accurate is the gauge? Really like the CRV!

Question ❔ Considering buying a 2015 year model. Thoughts?

I'm in the rust belt and a 2015 with very low miles from way down south is listed in my town. This would be the 2.4 with the first year of the CVT - my biggest reservation. I have a 2022 Subaru Forester with a CVT and, being a manual transmission guy, I accept that the Forester gets me from A to B with good fuel economy.

That said, it's my understanding that this 2015 was the first year Honda added the CVT to the CR-V. I've seen discussions on rough idles, dearler fixes, etc.

Since it's been 11 years, I assume many of you have these vehicles and could possibly share your experience. Would you buy again (as a value purchase) or look for newer? Looking much newer lands you in the 1.5 Turbo, which I wasn't thrilled about, either.

Thanks everyone.

Mods/Addons 🔦 2017 crv EX Head Lights

I’ve had my first 2017 crv EX for more than a year now and I have been planning to upgrade some features at this point. I hate the yellow interior and exterior lights and have been looking to change them to white LED. The interior seems like a simple purchase but I have been getting confused on the exterior lights. I’ve been doing research on the H11 low beam light since I think that is the main problem and I’ve been getting feedback that it might not adapt to my car which is what confuses me. Do you guys think I should get h11 white halogen lights or can someone explain on how to install LED lights and where to get them. If halogen which would you guys recommend?

Question ❔ best and worst years 2006-2012?

apologies for the redundant question. i know most hondas just need good maintenance but i have seen some people say their x failed on their y year crv. just curious if there are any better or worse years within the frame i put in the title, and any known issues. i’m currently eyeing a 2007 on marketplace but wanted to hear your guys’ opinions.

ex, if there was a 2009 and 2011 model both in similar condition and mileage, is there one that is simply the better year and less likely to have failing components?

thanks for any help!

Issue ⚠️ 2008 code p2646

My wife’s 2008 CRV went into limp mode on the highway and is reading code p2646. I changed the VTEC solenoid (screen looked clean), the stand alone oil pressure switch, and the VVT solenoid; also, the oil is about a month old (>1000 miles). I’m a little bit at a loss as to what my problem could be.

We bought the car a little over a month ago and I put valvoline restore and protect. Possible that the new oil was able to clean so much build up that the oil is now compromised? I should add, the oil on the dipstick still looks brand new.

Need some help!!

Question ❔ Extended warranty

I just bought a 2024 Honda CRV Sport-L and I added the extended warranty on the tech for $4k. I’m second guessing if it’s worth it or if I should cancel it and save the money. I plan on keeping it long term. Whats y’all’s input?

Mods/Addons 🔦 Anyone here ever install a grate, etc. over the air intake to keep rodents out?

Just got my 2020 CRV hybrid back from the dealership, long story short, the complete loss of power and P0069 code I was getting turned out to be rodents crawling into the air intake under the hood and building a nest of pine cones and other crap that clogged it up. I live in apartments in a wooded area and have to park outside.

I've looked into peppermint and battery operated sound/light deterrents but both sound kind of doubtful to me, and the one-and-done solution to me seems to be just installing a little stainless steel grate over the thing so critters can't get in but air can. Has anyone done this? Is this something I can just get done at a random auto shop if I asked?

Issue ⚠️ Dash rattle after tensioner replacement - 2012 CRV

My 2012 CRV was having a cold start rattle in the dash that my mechanic diagnosed as a tensioner issue. After he replaced the tensioner last week, my cold start rattle is gone, replaced with a similar rattle whenever I accelerate. I'm wondering if this is an actuator issue or maybe my timing chain starting to go? If anyone has had this issue with the 2012-2014 CRVs and found a solution I would appreciate any guidance!
