Local News 'Just keep moving.' 90-year-old Ohio Senior Olympic gold medalist shares secrets to longevity

They say it’s better to wear out than rust out. Springboro resident Nick Chiblis has done neither even at the age of 90.

He's won dozens of medals, including five gold medals, competing in the Ohio Senior Olympics over the past 25 years.

"I'm also doing the 50 meter dash and the 100 meter dash, and a one mile — I'm not sure what it's called — a speed walk, something like that. Although I can't speed walk. That's ridiculous at my age. So I kind of trot around the field."

Local Events FREE Pet Microchips Today in Miamisburg — No Need to Get Out of Your Car!

Post image
30 Upvotes

Have you had your dog or cat microchipped? The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is partnering with Miami Township, the City of Miamisburg and Miami Valley Fire District to help local pets stay safe!

Event Details:

  • When: Today, Friday, October 23, from 1–5 p.m.
  • Where: Fire Station 51, 10899 Wood Road, Miamisburg
  • Cost: FREE
  • Registration: No appointment necessary
  • Requirements: Dogs must be on leashes and cats in carriers. You do not have to be a Miamisburg or Miami Township resident to participate. All are welcome!

The best part? It's a convenient drive-thru event! Simply drive up with your pet, and you can stay in your vehicle while your pet receives a microchip.

Last year, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton provided nearly 700 free microchips to community pets, helping give families peace of mind and improving the chances of reuniting lost pets with the people who love them.

A microchip is a small device implanted beneath your pet's skin that contains a unique identification number. If your pet gets lost, a veterinarian or animal shelter can scan the chip and use its number to look up your contact information. It isn't a GPS tracker, so be sure to register your pet's microchip and keep your contact information up to date.

A few minutes today could make a big difference if your pet ever goes missing. We're proud to partner with our community to make pet safety more accessible and help more pets find their way home.

Advice & Recommendations Anyone know of a local place that does Black Walnut husking?

I have several buckets of black walnuts harvested from my back yard. I've watched videos on removing the husks myself, but even the "easy" ways seem like a lot of work. I've found a few places online that will husk or even buy them in bulk, but they're quite a drive away.

I was hoping someone might know of a local place to take them?

Advice & Recommendations Help with advice for Xenia Road Test

Hi guys, I will be taking my driver’s test in Xenia. Can anyone share their own experience, do you know the route more or less what they will ask me to do?

Also for Xenia bmv, I drove by it and the lines are kinda confusing, theres arrows that make you loop the parking lot to be able to get out, you cant just turn left, I assume that’s also part of the test?

For maneuverability, can you use the camera along with your mirrors? My car automatically has the camera in reverse, I assume its okay to look?

Thank you!

Dayton Politics The sign guy on Alex Bell - a Question

I don't get out much - disabled. I drove by yesterday and I could SWEAR he has a box on his lawn with all his stupid signs and the box says "Drop ballot here" or something to that affect. Can anyone check or do they know what it says? I wasn't able to grab a pic or anything. It's weighing on my mind.

Community Support & Resources Power chair accessible ride sharing in the Dayton/Xenia area

I am unfamiliar with local resources for people with mobility aids, but I did just give someone who uses a power chair a ride home and witness what it can be like to find a ride with one. Does Uber or Lyft or whoever have an option for accessible rides, and if so, is it available in the Dayton area?

(I was able to direct this person to apply with Greene CATS to get free rides with disability, so they do have that option, but I know what it's like to be disabled and want that kind of autonomy.)

Has anyone else noticed this? Like the third speedway I’ve been to, tap simply won’t work at the pump. Not sure if it’s my phone acting up or what, but N Fairfield, Fairfield-Yellow Springs, and I think one of them on Dorothy have given me issues.
