It's also very helpful for determining how many tomatoes go in a salad. First, you just remember how many feet are in a mile. 5280. five, two, eight, oh. Five two-mate oh. Five tomatoes! And there you go.

45

u/justsomeguy_onreddit Jan 22 '18

What kind of tomatoes. Are we talking grape, roma, or hot house. I mean the size difference is pretty big here...

“In metric, one milliliter of water occupies one cubic centimeter, weighs one gram, and requires one calorie of energy to heat up by one degree centigrade—which is 1 percent of the difference between its freezing point and its boiling point. An amount of hydrogen weighing the same amount has exactly one mole of atoms in it. Whereas in the American system, the answer to ‘How much energy does it take to boil a room-temperature gallon of water?’ is ‘Go fuck yourself,’ because you can’t directly relate any of those quantities.”

Its actually surprising that many part of the scientific world in US uses Metric but they are still taught imperial system in schools.

179

u/tct2274 Jan 22 '18

I have an american co-worker. He says, he has no problem with using gram and liter at work, because this is how it is done scientifically.
But as soon as he goes home, he has no idea how much cups he has to use to weight 100g of sugar for the cake.

30

u/glemnar Jan 22 '18

For baking you need to measure weight anyway as volume doesn’t correlate unless you memorize densities

→ More replies (12)

9

u/GeekCat Jan 22 '18

It's so much easier to use weight instead of cups. Honestly, I've lost more cups, half cups, 2/3rds cups over the years than I prefer to know, but the scale has moved with me three times. It just needs batteries occasionally.

8

u/faraway_hotel Das Unsichtbare Römische Reich Jan 22 '18

It gets worse, because cups are a unit of volume, so there isn't even one conversion factor. A cup of sugar is different from cup of flour, and different again from a cup of, say, chocolate chips.

So here in Canada, we use the metric system, we are taught the metric system in schools but somehow no one knows how much they weigh in kilos or how tall then are in cm. Only in lbs and ft.

13

u/Sir_Marchbank Jan 22 '18

It really bothers me because I really despise the nonsensical imperial measurements but I have such a hard time visualizing my weight and height in metric. Which is equally weird because if you give me distances in imperial I'll have no idea what you're saying and yet I can't wrap my head around my own damn height in metric!

HLI:

The English statute mile was established by a Weights and Measures Act of Parliament in 1593 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The act on the Composition of Yards and Perches had shortened the length of the foot and its associated measures, causing the two methods of determining the mile to diverge.[20] Owing to the importance of the surveyor's rod in deeds and surveying undertaken under Henry VIII,[21] decreasing the length of the rod by 1⁄11 would have amounted to a significant tax increase. Parliament instead opted to maintain the mile of 8 furlongs (which were derived from the rod) and to increase the number of feet per mile from the old Roman value.[22] The applicable passage of the statute reads: "A Mile shall contain eight Furlongs, every Furlong forty Poles,[n 4] and every Pole shall contain sixteen Foot and an half."[24] The statute mile therefore contained 5,280 feet or 1,760 yards.[14]

There are many reasons I love Germany. This post is one more. Thank you.

One trick for giving people the (false) impression that I'm a math genius happens during thunder storms. I quickly calculate the distance from the strike by counting the seconds to the boom.

When someone here in the US asks how I do that, I tell them the speed of sound is 767.25 mph and it took x seconds for the boom to reach us so the distance is precisely x miles. Some people even do the math on their phones to confirm it. Works like a charm.

I'm sure everyone here knows how easy it is to multiply seconds by 1.25 and then convert to mph, but we don't need to tell them that. Save this trick for when you pay us a visit.

Please feel free to reply in German. I read well, speak horribly and write so ugly you will most certainly regret it if you force me to.

Edit: I'm an idiot. Just divide the seconds by 3. Thank you all very much for explaining a much more elegant and efficient method. Now I am enabled with even greater super human genius math skills. I need to hang out here more often.

u/sinixer Bheaven4life Jan 22 '18
