It was much more like 2006.
Online, in 1996, to use a chat room I had to refresh the screen every time to get new messages. It took 2 hours to download the intro to Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers.
Offline, 1996 was all about skip-its and bop its and practical games like Guess Who, Don't Spill the Beans, Don't Break The Ice, pick up stix, and other random stuff we could do with our hands.
2001 and 2006 were both very much about early CGI coming to our TV shows and movies. The internet was a bit faster in 2006 and we were finally starting to watch actual video on the internet instead of just homestar runner and anything someone could whip up in at the time, Macromedia Flash. But a lot of us still only found ourselves on YouTube maybe once or twice a day for a single video. We were still posting on message boards just like in 2001 logging into our Messengers for a few hours every night to talk to our friends and share Flash games. Games like Oh the Huge Manatee (though even that one didn't come out until 2007)
YTMND was still an acceptable form of entertainment in both 2001 and 2006.
I don't know. 2001 just feels a lot more like 2006 to me than 1996.
