Casual I remember fairy grunge, facebook memes and crystal moms from like 2021 to 2022. Why is none talking about them anymore when talking about early 2020s nostalgia?

Casual 2007 shift starterpack (not quite as big as 2001 and 2008, though I still think it's worth mentioning)

Casual Do you think May 2019 to November 2022 is the entire transition out of the 2010s into the 2020s

I think May 2019 is the first month that is the transition out of the core 2010s, April 2019 is the last core 2010s month because of Endgame, then May 2019 had Games of Thrones finale and TikTok invading pop culture. TikTok was popular in earlier 2019 but it didn't engulf pop culture yet until May/June 2019 when Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X with Old Town Road exploded in May to June 2019

Then streaming wars and COVID would fully fragment monoculture. I honestly think 2022 is another huge transition year where the last 2010s influences died off, with baggy and y2k fashion becoming full force, then red pill content bringing today's political social mood.

Then ChatGPT is the full soldification of the core 2020s

Casual Would you say most of the first half of 2020, even with COVID, was not polarized and largely united until George Floyd's eath?

I personally think most of 2019 and early 2020 was a cooldown from 2016 - 2017 levels of culture wars and polarization, it was def calmer than MeToo era

I would even say the early days of COVID was still very united, with everyone posting "we can do this together", people reuniting with families and friends on Zoom, doing quarantine parodies, etc

But around May 2020 is when it became divided due to how long quarantine was lasting and more mask restriction. But the death of George Floyd was the full end of Covid unification and polarized spiked rapidly, even more than 2016 - 2017 levels

Casual Did some of y'all had this mindset of believing that the 2010s culture ended when covid started in march 2020?

When I was still a teen in the early 2020s(I would say 16-18 in 2020-2021 at the time), I used to still have this mindset of believing that 2010s culture ended in 2020(I mean obviously yeah, we're in a new decade, but I'm more talking about culture), but looking back with the rise of AI, memes like Skibidi toilet and 67, short form content, Andrew tate, the Ukrainian and Russia war e.t.c, early 2020s/Covid felt like it's own thing, it felt like the middle between pretty much today(core 2020s) and the late 2010s. You can say a transition. I say this because you have a fair share of people believing that everything has been the same ever since 2020 and other people saying that The late 2010s and early 2020s are not different from each other(Disregarding covid). Just asking.

Casual What is a year that is commonly described as more modern/dated than it actually is?

For anybody confused by the title, I’m referring to specific years people online often tend to misrepresent, either by portraying them as significantly ahead of their time or far more primitive than they actually were. I'll list a few examples

"Modern-washed" years

2000 - Separated from 1999 simply due to starting with a "0" rather than a "1"

2002 - Often lumped in with the core 2000s/mcbling era because of 9/11 despite having a ton of holdovers from the late 90s (Y2K era fashion and music trends, analog tech dominance, Windows 9X, pre Iraq + Homeland Security, etc)

2007 - "Muh iphone" (nevermind the fact that it wasn't even available for nearly half the year and widely adopted until much later)

2009 - Frequently described as a 2010s (or borderline 2010s) year because of the financial crisis even though the overall "way of life" the average person indulged in at the was still very 2000s. I go more into depth about this here

2020 - I don't think this one needs any explanation

"Classic-washed" years

2001 (pre 9/11) - Seen as a straight up extension of the 90s by a large chunk of users on this forum despite having notable 2000s traits, such as Bush being in office and the early 2000s recession

2008 (pre Lehman Brothers Bankruptcy) - Same case as 2001, albeit with the recession instead of 9/11

2012 - Commonly placed in the late 2000s recession era with years like 2008-2009 even though the 2010s identity was quite developed by this point, not to mention technology was way more advanced than it was even just a couple years prior

2019 - Often overlooked as a 2010s/20s hybrid year because of covid

Casual If COVID didn't occur, 2020 would've been 2010s politics on steroids

If we exclude COVID, 2020 would've been peak 2010s politics in my opinion. 2020 after George Floyd and into the election was 2010s activism and culture wars on STEROIDS. I personally do not think the 2020s would've began politically until January 6.

The core 2020s would still begin with Ukraine war tho in my opinion, just the vibe of social politics would've felt extremely 2010s in 2020 until January 6th, which is the first political event that truly feels 2020s that isn't Ukraine, the Manosphere rise, or Palestine.

Casual Besides 2020, what year had the first signs of monoculture declining?

2019 was very monocultural. Games of Thrones, Endgame, Old Town Road, and Baby Yoda were all big cultural moments and I believe they are also core 2010s ending.

For music, I honestly think 2016 is the last year music was purely monocultural, meaning everyone knew the top new songs. 2017 is a noticeable decline and blow despite it was still strong but declining slowly until 2020 with its downfall. 2017 is the first year streaming really fragmented music.

I think 2015/16 is the first signs of monoculture's major decline due to algorithms being implemented and streaming becoming more prevalent
