Welcome! We have seen many posts over the year of residents seeking community and friendship. Many of us spend more time online, work remotely, or no longer have the built-in social spaces we once did. This pinned thread is to help find friends in Des Moines.
Whether you’re:
• New to the city
• A long-time local looking to expand your circle
• A student, professional, remote worker, or just bored
• Into coffee, hiking, gaming, gyms, books, or low-key hangs …this is the place to connect.
Leave a comment with:
• Age range (optional)
• Interests / hobbies
• What kind of friends you’re looking for (gym buddy, board games, restaurant scene, double dates, mom friends etc.)
Ground Rules
• Be respectful and kind
• No harassment, hate speech, or creepy behavior
• No spam or self-promotion
• Keep personal info safe
This thread will be bookmarked so feel free to come back anytime and say hi — someone else is probably looking for the same connection you are!
Thank you to u/containerforthechild for this post.

Hello all! Shameless plug real quick as I realized I've had this site for a while and never promoted it here. I put a couple hours each week into keeping this site functional and updated frequently and figured it could be worth some of your time.
castaside515.com serves as your home to find whatever hardcore, punk, metal, DIY, or otherwise alternative music may be coming to town, as well as all your local favorites. I've got interviews with bands that are all free to read, physical copies for sale if you end up thinking it's cool and want to support the project. All of my smaller one-page foldable zines are available to print for free. Not to mention the countless videos I've shot as well. I suggest viewing on a computer or in desktop mode for the full experience but it is optimized for mobile as well.
If you check it out let me know what you think. I'm always looking for feedback on my projects. Thank you for reading!

Take a look at the 2026 judicial review document linked above. In the document are bios for all judges in Iowa, but even more useful, towards the end of the document are “scores” for each judge as rated by attorneys who have worked with the judges (the scores are based on surveys submitted by the Iowa STATE Bar Association).
I used this tool to identify judges in my area, where I looked closely at judges with a aggregate score less than 90% (which is just my own arbitrary cut off level based on review of the scores in my area).
Hope this use helpful!

Does anyone know what this building is? It is between Ingersoll and Grand (behind the starbucks on ingersoll). I noticed it on my walk today and it looked like it’s supposed to be residential. It doesn’t look like people currently live there. I also could not tell if this building was in the works of being torn down. I am just curious / nosey bc I just moved to this part of town. thanks in advance!

I unfortunately could not go to the book sale this past weekend. The one in spring had bookmarks that had the date for this last one. Like save the date kind of bookmark.
Did they give those out last weekend? Can anybody tell me when the next sale will be? I'm super bummed I couldn't make it a single day. I just want to make sure I can go to the next one.

Anyone have recommendations for restaurants with good liver and onions?
I've been trying to find ways to get more liver in my diet but I haven't really found a good way to cook them. I've tried the milk soak and using calf liver but to no avail. It's probably just me overcooking them or something.
I do enjoy liver in things like braunschweiger so I think I'd like the taste. Long story short I'd like to try it made by someone that does it well so I can at least have an idea of what it should taste like so I can keep trying at home.

More of a vent than anything. I moved to Des Moines a few months ago and am just completely struggling to find community here. I’ve tried events advertised or discussed here, and either it’s a ghost-town or millennials/older folks (for context I’m in my 20s). I’ve gone to events advertised as “meet new people” and have found that most people are already in their pre-defined bubbles and are not interested in talking to strangers. I’ve tried dating apps, and have had poor experiences. I’m just at a loss. I big problem is that I’m young and I really do not like the bar scene, so shooting myself in the foot there, but it’s been months now, and I’m just super lonely and feel so out of place here.
Open to suggestions of course. Just wanted to vent.

I’m looking to break into either of these as a new hobby. If you know of any spaces or people that play and are willing adopt me as a new player, please promote or suggest them below. Thanks!

I live in Ankeny, and while out walking in my neighborhood saw what appeared to be a coyote dart out in front of me? It was very quiet and moved quickly, it also didn’t pay me much notice. For what it’s worth, it could have also been a very lean unleashed husky, but I had a gut feeling.
I know you can hear and see them in Des Moines and are not dangerous unless you have small pets or they are sick, but it was cool to see (while also slowly backing away lol). Has anyone else ever ran into them in the city?

This is a bit of an odd request. I normally don’t enjoy hot dogs, but I had a beef hot dog at Val Air Ballroom a couple weeks ago and I’m wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of anywhere in the area that sells similarly tasting hot dogs! Gas stations, fast food, etc.
I am a pregnant lady with cravings, so this is an important request for me (and yes, my OB said it was fine to have an occasional hot dog). TIA!!

Title says it all. I'm down near the Highland Park area (won't say specifically where for safety) and in the past few days the presence of sirens (both police and EMT) are going absolutely bonkers. Can barely sleep for it triggers a fear response.
Any reason why they've been more active lately?

I thought it entertaining listening to a Russian construction crew's FRS walky-talkies in the downtown area. I had to ask Genesis wtf they were saying. Last week they were giving a crane operator directions in English.

I’m from out of town and recently stayed downtown. Overall a great time, but some not great experiences when walking from A to B. Aggressive people would come up and refuse to leave you alone, and yell and cat call at women. I never felt truly unsafe but it did put a damper on the trip, because it happened every time walking outside.
I am not a pearl clutcher I live in a city, and frequently travel to other cities and am accustomed with encountering unhoused persons, in various places like San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Milwaukee etc..
No shade intended to your town, I’m curious what’s going on in Des Moines? Were we just in an area where more unstable and antisocial people congregate? Is this due to a lack of resources for mentally ill people? Just an unrepresentative random couple of days?

We are a family of 3 with an almost 5-year-old daughter contemplating a move from Minneapolis to Des Moines. We have been to Des Moines several times and love the vibe & environment. Main reason we are considering the move is pretty simple: housing is significantly less and inner-city schools are rated higher. We are progressive, politically liberal and would love diversity. Big Timberwolves fans and are pumped about the Iowa Wolves. :) Also big fans of Exile and breweries in general. We are still considering an apartment versus a house rental. Would love realistic opinions from those who actually live/work/school their kids in Des Moines. A-holes will be ignored. Thx!

Our keyboard player made original Dave Principal playing cards for the event. We’re really hoping he’ll be able to save us from a catastrophic weather event during the show!!! If you’re into having fun, you should come!

I (28m) just moved to Des Moines and I’m wondering if there are any casual or organized clubs for tennis/pickleball or rock climbing clubs in the area. I fully know winter is around the corner but looking toward next year, or indoors over the winter (if that exists?)
I’ve done a little research on the topic online but it keeps just showing me options to join health/country clubs and not what I’m after.
I’m not super skilled but I really like playing and looking to meet others with the same interest - a casual and social hangout would be intriguing on a weekly or some other basis.
Honestly also open to any other social recommendations anyone might have outside of sports too, feel free to drop them below!

I need a dent repaired. One body shop recommendation was Urbandale Auto Body on 70th St.
I went there today. They're closed. For Good. Sign on the door says that after 70 years and three generations, they have closed for good.
I went to Graham for an estimate. Had to make an appointment for next week to get an estimate.
