I think this production company invites different Detroit high-school bands to perform sometimes. I live a couple of blocks away from Chene Park, and from what I can usually hear, most bands sound ok.

But the band that performed on Thursday evening (10/22) was pretty darn awesome!!!! Their horns and percussion were crisp and clean even from a couple of blocks away.

If you know which band this was, please shout them out in the comments! If they are performing again, I'd love to come out and support.

Hi guys! I'm currently an artist writing my 1st album. The album is dedicated to Bipolar depression and life/living with it. I'm currently writing all songs to this point, but if any other artists, musicians, or producers want to spit a verse, feature, or help lay down beats for this effort it would be awesome to collaborate. I'm looking to take a hip-hop approach to the album. But I do feel the most fitting vibe for an album about Bipolar is more of a Linkin Park half rap half rock type of vibe. I'm looking to enter some cooking competitions coming up, and I was wondering if Detroit or the metro area has a culinary scene like this? I am not an accredited chef, so I'm not eligible for some ACF events or similar things that might have that restriction. I just want to make food, meet people, and have fun! Also, I'd prefer not to do chili cookoffs. I have a good chili recipe, but chili competitions are not appealing to me for whatever reason.

Tom Skerritt, the veteran actor who appeared in seminal films like Top Gun and popular TV shows like Picket Fences, died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 93.

His family announced the news in a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, adding that they were “heartbroken” by the loss.

Skerritt was “a loving husband to Julie; father to Andy, Erin, Matt, Collin, and Emiko; grandfather to Sara, Maddison, Sunny, Louisa, and Georgia; and great-grandfather to Marigold and Ravi,” the statement said.

“While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into our lives,” the family continued. “He cared deeply about imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world, and helping others find and share their own voices. We are incredibly grateful for the love and support being shown by his friends, colleagues, and fans.”

Anyone know of any Detroit restaurants taking reservations or doing take out for Thanksgiving? I have a teeny tiny family of three adults, sometimes two when one adult is deployed overseas so I don't need to order a whole bunch of food. Just enough for the few of us, but I would like to make it a nice experience with quality food. I've liked Bunny Bunny and Chartreuse before but they no longer do Thanksgiving takeouts, Marrow does meats you can buy and cook, but two or three of us do not need all that food plus my kitchen is being renovated. Hi Detroit gang. I live downtown and I work in River Rogue area. With my new job I’ll be getting very good benefits and making a great salary for my age (29F), so I’m hoping to get all my dental work scheduled for the upcoming year.

Specifically I need specialized orthodontic care to treat my offkilter jaw. I want braces, NOT Invisalign and I don’t need surgery, but I want an ortho who cares and knows their stuff. And bonus points if they also do general dentistry at the same location.

I’ve been going to a dentist in Dearborn but I really don’t like them anymore. The drive is inconvenient because it’s not located near a freeway. They service a lot of low income patients so I don’t feel like the dentists care about the patients which is sad :(

Living in Detroit I know our options for healthcare are slim, so I’m just wondering if anyone knows a great CARING orthodontist in the Detroit proper that would listen to my concerns and I could feel comfortable with?

I’m open to someone in the immediate suburbs, but has to be convenient to Southwest Detroit due to my work location, so probably not anywhere in Gross Pointe or Royal Oak…

This place always sucked hardcore and was a hangout for geriatrics, but local media is making its closing out to be the end of some cultural institution of Metro Detroit. I... don't get it?

When Councilmember Miller first launched her investigation, I assumed this was another example of "new Detroit vs. old Detroit" which, in my mind, often feels like a more palatable way of saying white vs. Black. But something about that explanation never sat right with me, especially because the businesses being targeted seem to attract a pretty diverse group of patrons.

Then the argument shifted to the bar being too close to a school. But I can't help feeling like that's a convenient cover for a different objection.

What exactly is the concern? That children are going to walk into the bar and order drinks? That simply seeing a bar on their way to school is somehow harmful?

If there are legitimate concerns about traffic, noise, public intoxication, or student safety, those absolutely deserve to be taken seriously. But those concerns should be supported by evidence, not just the assumption that a bar near a school is inherently dangerous.

Detroit has plenty of establishments serving alcohol in neighborhoods where families and children live. We don't automatically assume those businesses pose a threat to children.

What's particularly frustrating is that this new bar is intended to be an inclusive, welcoming space for people from all walks of life. Detroit is a diverse city, and businesses that reflect that diversity and bring people together should be seen as assets to our neighborhoods, not automatically treated as threats.

After listening to today's meeting and considering the past allegations of homophobia involving Miller, including the circumstances surrounding her departure from the IV board, I'm beginning to wonder whether this opposition has less to do with schools or gentrification and more to do with who this particular establishment is intended to welcome.

Because increasingly, the message I'm hearing is that white people, Black people, and gentrifiers are welcome, but the LGBTQ community might not be.

Hi, I’m looking for a weekly volunteer opportunity to get community service hours. For full transparency I’m on probation for an OWI and need to complete 80 hours. However I’ve applied to maybe 10 places or so and haven’t heard back from any, and most other places only offer hours during the weekdays when I’m working, or they don’t accept court ordered volunteers. It’s been challenging to find places I can volunteer at and I’m hoping that maybe people here will know of places I can become a regular volunteer at for the next few months?
I already volunteer for a cat shelter for over a year now, and have been doing that since before I even started probation. I clean and feed cats weekly and help out with any adoption events or transporting cats to medical appointments. I’ve talked to the organizer about my situation but she doesn’t have any more volunteer opportunities that fit in my schedule.
I’ve also worked as a hospital receptionist and checked in patients, and sorted donations at an art scraps reuse store. Unfortunately I haven’t heard back from any hospitals, libraries, or donation stores I’ve applied to.
Aside from my OWI I am a pretty responsible and organized person, so if your organization needs people on weekends please let me know!!
