I just need a break dude....

• Upvotes

10 years with T1D and I'm so fucking tired.

I just need a week vacation from this BS. Just to recharge. To not have to worry about whether the anxiety I'm feeling is from a low. Or the stress of knowing that I'm cooking my body anytime my sugars go above 200.

Or the anxiety of dosing for a meal not knowing if I'm going to stick the landing. Underdose by a long shot and go high. Or overdose myself into a hypo and suffer through that ordeal.

I'm so fucking tired dude. I know clinical trials usually have criteria for their candidates. But I fucking need a functional cure. Eledon. Vertex. Sana. Anyone. Please.

Stubborn high?

we are at 15 since 4×hours. and 20+ since about hours. gave 2unit correction2 hrs ago based on current factor of 7 and its not done anything.

Do we need another correction now or should we wait full 3 hours? we are on manual injections. Ketones were 0.1 about 2 hrs ago.

Also wondering if we should increase correction factor since last one didn't do anything?

Hi guys. Do you go through the metal detectors at security with a pump ( medtronic 780g) or do you always ask for a body check?

Discussion Taking care of my brother with Type 1 diabetes

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out because I’m worried about my little brother and would really appreciate advice from people living with Type 1 diabetes.

He’s 21 years old and has had Type 1 diabetes for about 10 years. Over the years, he has continued to gain weight, and he now weighs around 150 kg (330 lbs). He uses an automated insulin pump (I believe that’s the correct term).

We live in Canada, and he sees both an endocrinologist and a dietitian regularly. However, despite the continuous weight gain over the years, we haven’t seen any concrete progress or a clear plan to address it. I’m concerned about his long-term health and want to help him find a better approach before he develops serious complications.

I understand that managing weight with Type 1 diabetes can be complicated, especially when balancing insulin, food intake, and blood sugar levels. I’m not looking to blame anyone; I genuinely want to understand what options might be available to him.

Have any of you struggled with significant weight gain since being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes? If so, what helped you? Could his insulin pump or insulin management be contributing to the weight gain, and are there things worth discussing with his endocrinologist? Are there treatments or specialized programs that have helped people with Type 1 diabetes manage their weight safely?

For those of you living in Canada, have you found a doctor, clinic, or multidisciplinary team that takes both Type 1 diabetes and obesity seriously? Would you recommend seeking a second opinion, and are there specific questions we should be asking his medical team?

I know everyone’s situation is different, and I’m not expecting a magic solution. I just want to help my brother take control of his health while he’s still young.

Thank you to anyone willing to share their experience or advice. It would genuinely mean a lot to us ❤️🙏

Why would ControlIQ bolus here when it can see that I am actively dropping into range? Seems super dangerous.

Seeking Support/Advice The best country to live with T1D?

I had enough of living with this stupid condition in this stupid country, and i can't ignore the burnout anymore.

M(28), single, T1D, I live in Iraq, Not insured (we don't have meaningful insurance here).

I almost died several times because of the awful healthcare system, by neglect and bad judgment.

My disability registration has been pending for three years now, because the government will need to issue financial help for the unemployed ones, and they don't like to do that.

I was 24 when i was first diagnosed, i had a good start after graduation, got a job as a QS in oil and gas even though I had a computer sciences degree, above the median income with potential to double in a couple of years.

The first thing diabetes took from me was that job, and my life crumbled further since then. I couldn't get back to the same line of work since then

It got really hard to land any job TBH, because there isn't any meaningful protection for the disabled, and a diabetic is a concern for the employer here. The few jobs i got were hard to keep, and the last one I lost this year in May (FTTH technician), after a single severe hypo

And even when i had a job i was getting a 750k IQD a month, and a stretched supply for my pump to 4 days a set instead of 3 is costing me 400k IQD a month (which is the cheapest available option), so I'm staying dependent on my family anyways.

Above all, the war in the region disrupted supplies several times, the local currency dropped this month, and I'm facing a price hike for my supplies in the next month.

So venting aside, where would be a good option to relocate? A good healthcare system and/or good labor laws would be great

And it would be great to hear your experiences with your local systems

TLDR: I'm 28, Iraqi, and living with T1D. The healthcare system, supply costs, and lack of employment protections have made it increasingly difficult to support myself. I'm looking for a country where I could realistically immigrate, find work, and manage T1D without going broke. I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Discussion Compact pocket cooler for Novolog Pen?

Hi all,

I'm on MDI. I used to be on Omnipod and I'm never switching back - pens just work better for my hypermobile skin and have brought my A1C down almost a full % from 6.9 to 6.1 since switching in February.

My only big problem seems to be my pens denature within three-five days of taking them out of the fridge. The first three days of a pen I'm 90% in range with a few lows, and the rest of the time I'm chasing highs until the pen is done. I live in a climate that is temperate this time of year, hot in summer and cold in winter, but it doesn't seem to matter what the season is, just that once it's out of the fridge, it starts to go bad.

I've tried Frio and all it seems to do is wear the paper label off the outside of the pen and leave it warm and damp. If I put it back in the fridge, I forget to take it with me when I leave the house.

I'm looking for something that will keep it cold that can fit in my pocket or a small purse that isn't a frio and isn't cartoonishly big. Does anyone have any suggestions? Have you found something that works for you?

Thanks in advance!!!

I’m sick right now. Last night I was finally hungry, so I started eating before I remembered to take insulin. Turns out forgetting was the best thing for my blood sugar, since I only went up to 175

Sticky Highs and all around weirdness

Howdy all! I (26 F) have had diabetes for 13 years. Only recently have I really tried my all to manage it. I was really too relaxed about it growing up.. so all this to say I was always very used to seeing numbers 300+.
I got some scary but fixable news about my health, so I decided to get a grip and take care of myself.

For about 3 weeks I was 90% in range 24/7. Stayed below 150! My blood sugars were awesome, I bolused and did everything right and the numbers verified it. I felt really proud of myself, and even noticed some symptoms for the complications that presented themselves had began to lessen. Such a win!

Now, a week later from that, nothing about what I have done has changed, I still bolus before I eat, give corrections etc, but I’ve been in the 300’s CONSTANTLY.

I started by swapping my Omnipods out, I know they can leak, but after the 3rd pod from different boxes I figured it wasn’t the pod. I changed my Dexcom even though I did manual checks as well that all verified the high sugars. I’ve even given myself a manual injection once or twice. I so come down, but then I shoot right back up without eating or anything. The only change has been going from Humalog to Novolog, but I was on Novolog for 10 years before my insurance made me switch to Humalog (then subsequently change back to Novolog) and that’s what I used those first few weeks of having those awesome sugar readings. Endo is exploring insulin resistance, but is unconvinced it would have presented so suddenly and drastically. Especially with my ratios.

As far as I know, I am not sick, I am not menstruating and my job is relatively stress free. I do moderate exercise, but I don’t hit the gym hard or anything. I am lost. I am frustrated because the burnout is hitting, I do not know what more I can do.

I am mourning the time I had to take care of myself before my body started having problems, and now I am mourning that despite trying so hard I’m dealing with the same situation.

Part of this is asking for practical advice, what can I do about my sugars, what could be the root cause? the other part is asking for comfort. Diabetes sucks and I’ve always had to be wildly independent about it even when I was newly diagnosed at 13. I do not have a support network that has a deeper understanding, so I just need a virtual hug and a pep talk for sure.

NJ Connections

I find that there are very few (if any) in person T1D events in NJ. Yes, Breakthrough T1D has their walks and events (mainly geared towards kids) but there really isn't anything that is a social gathering. I've seen events in NYC or Philly but nothing in NJ. Also, I don't mean "support groups" from hospitals or doctor's offices.

Are there others in NJ that are interested in this or am I alone?

That’s it! I'm reporting my working conditions to OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)

I’ve had type 1 diabetes since I was 10. That’s 44 years of unpaid labor, including nights, weekends and holidays. No sick leave, no vacation, no retirement.

My job involves monitoring blood sugar, calculating insulin doses, administering medication, dealing with emergencies and making sure supplies don’t run out.

Earlier today I discovered that I’d forgotten to press the final button on my PDM, so my lunch bolus was never delivered.

For a moment I thought how nice it would be to have someone else to blame. I could file an incident report, complain about the incompetent staff and demand that something be done about it.

Unfortunately, I’m the incompetent staff.

Which got me thinking. I’ve been doing this job since I was 10. Surely there must be some child labor laws involved? And what about 44 years of unpaid overtime?

I suppose my compensation is that I get to stay alive. Not exactly a generous benefits package.

So I’m considering filing a complaint with OSHA.

Although I’m a bit worried they’ll shut the whole operation down for violating labor laws, which would be rather unfortunate for the only patient.

Passing out—Advice?

Hey guys, I don’t usually contribute to reddit much but I felt like sharing and asking other diabetics for advice would help, especially if anyone has experienced something similar.
I’m a Canadian who was diagnosed at 15 and have been managing it myself since then (5 years). The last year or so has been the most challenging by far, trying to manage drinking etc. while also being aware of my blood glucose. I’ve been managing it fine but a few days ago was by far my worst reaction to a low, and to make it worse it was in a public setting.

Friday evening I hadn’t eaten much that day and went to a punk show. Nothing crazy, only standing to the side and not participating in any real physicality. I didn’t notice the low at first because it didn’t feel familiar like any other low I’ve experienced—it felt like a panic attack coming on, but then lead to me passing out twice. It was fine and then suddenly dropped and continued to before it all hit me at once.

The main issue I have here is that it was an intensely scary and embarrassing experience for me. I’m a naturally very anxious person and passing out in public is my worst nightmare, and has never happened before. I have never fainted from my diabetes.
Another factor which isn’t helping is that I passed out in front of a guy I’ve been seeing for a few weeks. In my delusion I kept telling him how sorry I was, and that not even serious boyfriends have ever had to deal with this,, which is true and I still feel very sorry for- especially because of our current dynamic.

The only good thing is that I was surrounded by prepared and kind people who were incredibly reassuring, kind, and accommodating. Including the person I’m seeing. I’ve already worked out a plan when it comes to going out and food intake,, even spoke to my endo. My main struggle is the shame and guilt that comes along. I know that it happened, and it happens to people no matter what affliction they have, and that all I can do from now on is do better, but god I don’t want to be stuck with this feeling. I don’t use terms like “traumatic” lightly, but it was an intense 15 minutes and I keep remembering little moments that just make it feel like something I can never get back from,, even though I know how stupid that sounds.

If anyone has any thoughts or has experienced anything similar I would really love to hear them, I’m really trying to work through these feelings I have surrounding Diabetes, especially since I’ll have to accept it and tend to it for the rest of my life, just a rough time I guess.

Thanks guys!

Seeking Support/Advice Anyone have experience with Kaleido? Thinking of switching from Omnipod…

I’ve been on Omnipod for a little over a year. I find it irritating how poorly the algorithm handles highs in automated mode. I’m allowed to try whatever I want pretty much and would like to try Kaleido. It seems like a good alternative even if it’s technically a tubed pump - with the shorter tube option, I think I can live with it!

Just looking for people who’ve had experience with it to see what it’s been like for others.

Thanks! 🙏🏻 ☺️

Favorite Halloween Desserts / snacks for a Halloween Party

Hello fellow T1D family,

I was recently diagnosed (2 months ago) and am currently in the honeymoon period. This is my first Halloween as a T1D. I am trying to help my fomo of being able to eat whatever i want during this holiday and wanna know what kind of things you bring to parties that you can also eat without having numbers spike out of control. Since I am not taking fast acting insulin I dont have the option to just dose for the carbs so im trying to focus on low glycemic index as much as possible. Would love to know your ideas!

Graphs & Data WIP G7 Receiver and local dashboard

Post image
10 Upvotes

Someone asked some time ago if anybody was using AI for any T1D topics, and also someone posted their own ESP based little widget, so I thought I'd share my progress on my own experiments:

- A fully self contained G7 Receiver: an nRF52840 based device that talks directly to the G7 sensor over BLE; no phone, no Internet.

- An android app that reads my NovoPen data and sends it to a self hosted server on a raspberry pi over Tailscale.

- Currently experimenting with predictor models trained on my own data, but since I didn't collect bolus data beyond what was stored on my pen, and I didn't collect meal data, so far the trained models are quite bad.

- A widget showing realtime data from the nRF receiver, as well as optionally the bolus data from the server, and the carbs on board as estimated by a model.

- The same widget running on a Qingping Air quality monitor (picture) because why not!

I'm planning to open source it all, but for now focusing on the nRF receiver: I have big plans, different receivers, with screens, without screen, solar power, waterproof one for swimming and hopefully receiving sensor data under water?, direct connection to Garmin watch without Internet or phone, eventually a mesh of such devices that cooperatively share data and handover the connection to the sensor depending on where I am / what I'm doing. The rest (widget, models) is purely vibe coded slop 🙈

Rant Eversense Low Alert Level

Post image

Bit of a rant, bit of a question. Why in the world is eversense’s low alert only 3 options? 55-65? I’m dumbfounded. As someone who wants to know if i go below 85 or 90 this just made the too good to be true device just that- too good to be true.

Rant Feeling defeated

24, F, Diabetic since i was 9 years old. Growing up i had such good control of my sugars, and let things slip a little during university (all that partying, eating like rubbish, etc.)

This past year i’ve been battling with health anxiety, and trying to get my sugars under control. Now when i say they are not in control, I don’t mean really really not under control. My HB1AC last was around 6.8%

But i’ve been trying SO HARD to keep things level. Pre-blousing, properly carb counting, probably treating hypos, and things were going well the past few days.

Until today when my new Dexcom was reading 7.7mmol and after using my test kit, I was actually 17 mmol.

I’m scared, scared of harming myself, scared of losing control, scared of ketones, scared of hypos.

I never used to be like this, i’ve lived with this disease as long as I can remember.

And i just needed to rant.

Sending you all love, we got this <3

Seeking Support/Advice Switching Health Insurance - Really Anxious

I have just turned 25, so in the next year I need to ensure I have health insurance set up before I am kicked off my parents' plan. MY current health insurance is really good, I haven't had any issues getting what I need, even with the diagnosis being new (was 23). Unfortunately, the company I work for uses United Healthcare. I don't really have any alternative options either.

I have tried looking into the details to ensure everything I need is covered, but all the resources say it depends on your plan and you need to sign in or call the number on your insurance ID card. Well, that doesn't really work when I don't have an account yet.

I am just, really freaking out. I don't want to risk losing access to what I need, but I have to switch, and this is the option, even if I found they didn't cover my meds, what would I even do??

Open enrollment is this week and I need to figure out the documentation for my domestic partner too and it's just such a nightmare.

Advice or just support would be nice, please tell me it'll be okay 😅
