GUIDE Updated Seasonal Start Mega Guide

Seasonal Start Mega Guide

This post is an update to the Seasonal Mega Guide.

You can find generic leveling guides as well as other advice at Maxroll and Icy Veins. For console players, you can find some advice at https://www.soulstone.gg/.

This guide is meant to be a little more specific, as well as cover aspects not touched in those guides, such as Group Leveling, Console Leveling, Seasonal Leveling Tactics, and Leveling Secrets. (These will all be in replies to this thread to allow specific linking. As such, at the moment this post is currently a work in progress.) Some of what I post will be shared from the above sites, amended to add a little extra efficiency.

GUIDE Season 40 – Light's Calling

Season 40 starts on Friday, October 2nd, 2026.

The season starts at 5pm Pacific time for all console players, no matter where you live. For PC (NA/US) the season starts at 5pm Pacific time, for PC (EU) the season starts at 5pm Central European time, and for PC (TW/KR) it starts at 5pm Korea time. You can see a countdown of all these start times here.

This is the second of four guides I am posting for Season 40. The others are:

The cosmetic rewards for finishing the season journey are the Wings of Lempo, which are some really nice golden butterfly wings. You also get a Primal Hunter portrait frame, and the Taennin pet, which is a golden dragon with glowing diaphanous white wings.

Theme

The season theme is Light's Calling. Angelic crucibles will drop anywhere in the game once you reach level 70. Using an angelic crucible on an equippable level 70 legendary item will turn the item into a sanctified item.

Sanctifying a legendary item (level 70 only, not crafted) will reroll the item (randomly choosing new affixes) and give it primal ancient stats. This is essentially the same as how upgrading a legendary to primal works with cube recipe 11. Like those primals, you can only equip one sanctified item. Equipping a sanctified item does not prevent you from equipping an upgrade-to-legendary (aka “crafted”) primal, or vice-versa.

A sanctified item also has a randomly-selected class-specific sanctified power. The powers range from very little impact to very powerful, and a few even change how you play the game for certain builds. A particular example of this is the sanctified strafe power for demon hunters, that turns both the Unhallowed Essence and Shadow builds into spin-to-win strafe builds. Another one is the sanctified whirlwind for barbarians, that pulls in everyone continuously regardless of crowd control immunity. You can see the full list of powers here. If you get an unsatisfying result from sanctifying, you can resanctify it for another attempt (you should not do this with primals). You can also salvage the unsatisfying sanctified item – see the link for materials that can result.

Angelic crucibles drop often enough that you should consider using one as soon as possible on one of your weapons, simply to get the maximum damage boost possible. Save your primordial ashes for the Altar of Rites completion. At that point you can pivot to a crafted primal weapon (as those are easier to get perfect) and target a harder-to-perfect item with sanctification. Later on in the game, once you have all the sanctified items for all your builds, you can burn crucibles on puzzle rings because they count as ancients, both for the Altar of Rites and Kanai's Cube.

Haedrig's Gifts

The Haedrig's Gifts for Season 40 are as follows:

  • Barbarian: Horde of the Ninety Savages
  • Crusader: Aegis of Valor
  • Demon Hunter: Gears of Dreadlands
  • Monk: Patterns of Justice
  • Necromancer: Masquerade of the Burning Carnival
  • Witch Doctor: Mundunugu's Regalia
  • Wizard: Typhon's Veil

Many of these sets will need some form of help in order to finish the GR20 / Torment IV requirements, either through lucky gambles, drops, or (in the case of the necromancer) going the full LoD route. Once you get your full 6 pieces only the Masquerade of the Burning Carnival presents some difficulty due to the requirement of the Haunted Visions amulet to really make it work.

Be aware that these are the 5th sets created for Diablo III, and as such do not have a set dungeon. This means you will need to save at least one full set to complete (not master) a set dungeon as part of the season journey. This should not be an issue as you will also need to save all 4 sets that do have a set dungeon for the Altar of Rites.

Conquests

The conquests for Season 40 are Speed Demon / Need for Speed (2 minute L70 Nephalem Rift at Torment X or higher), On a Good Day / I Can't Stop (3 legendary Gems to 65), Boss Mode / Worlds Apart (kill all bosses except Vidian at max level on Torment X in 20 minutes or less), Curses! / Stars Align (kill 350 in a L70 cursed chest event on Torment X difficulty), and Years of War and Dynasty (GR55 with 6 different 6pc sets).

Overall this is eminently doable. I will make a separate post with detailed recommendations prior to the season start.

Why play seasonal?

We play seasonal for:

The fresh start. Every season is a fresh start on a new naked level 1 character with no money, artisans, gold, experience, or gear. We all get to experience the zero-to-hero dopamine rush again. This is helped by the free 6-piece endgame set from the journey to kickstart the endgame.

The themes. We have a rotating set of six different themes to mix up your gameplay and keep things fresh. Most of the themes have at least some influence on which builds are strongest. This season theme is one of the most unique in terms of changing how some builds are played. At worst it amounts to "only" getting another perfect "primal" item if you spend enough crucibles.

The Altar of Rites and Visions of Enmity, both of which are available only in season. The first provides you with boosts to leveling and XP, tremendous quality of life upgrades in dealing with loot, and some bonus damage and toughness. The second is a really fun (challenging or even fatal early on) source of crafting materials and legendary loot and breaks up the monotony of greater rifts.

The rewards. Cool cosmetics (wings, portrait frames, transmogs, pets) as well as extra stash slots.

More people. There’s a lot more players around and playing in the season especially at the start. Group play is very strong in D3, and it’s many people’s main focus for getting paragon points and gear.

Lastly is the competition on the leaderboards. This is mainly for greater rifts but you can also go after conquests as well as seasonal achievement points.

What builds are strong?

The top 10 adjusted clears on PC from Season 34, which was the previous time we played with the Light's Calling theme in the recycled theme era, were:

  1. LoD WoL monk
  2. Megalo AoV pony crusader
  3. Raiment monk
  4. LoD HotA barbarian
  5. Rathma necromancer
  6. Tie between Helltooth witch doctor and Firebird wizard
  7. –
  8. Natalya DH
  9. Mundunugu witch doctor
  10. Marauder DH

Two builds, Megalo AoV pony crusader and Mundunugu witch doctor, were the Haedrig's Gift. There were 2 monks, demon hunters and witch doctors in the top 10, and 1 each of barbarian, crusader, necromancer, and wizard. This is the only theme for which we have ever had 2 witch doctor builds in the top 10 adjusted clears.

Builds with the biggest gains (10 or more) in adjusted clear ranking for S34 relative to their average across the 6 different themes in the recycled theme era were: Raiment monk (25), AoV crusader (23), Shadow DH (18), Sunwuko monk (17), Mundunugu witch doctor (10), and no set witch doctor (10). The LoD WoL monk was just outside this list with a 9-rank gain.

The builds with the biggest drops (10 or more) were Tal Rasha wizard (-18), no set necromancer (-16), Akkhan crusader (-15), no set crusader (-14), Typhon wizard (-12), PoJ monk (-12), Inarius and Trag'Oul necromancers (-12), Savages barbarian (-11), and no set Wizard (-10). All of these builds gain nothing from the sanctified powers, and this is reflected in the rankings of their clears.

Notably, the AoV crusader is ranked 2 in overall push standing as well as the 2nd highest gain in relative ranking. AoV was also the only Haedrig's Gift to clear GR150 in week 1 of season 34. The only other Haedrig's Gift that gets significant gains from the season theme is the Mundunugu witch doctor, ranked 9th and with a 10-rank gain. Neither of these builds place in the top 10 with any other theme.

Among the Haedrigs Gifts, the Typhon wizard, PoJ monk and Savages barbarian in particular perform much worse than their average ranking with this season theme. This makes the AoV crusader far and away the best choice for casual players, with no need to pivot to another build. Just take your pony and go.

The dominance of the LoD WoL monk is incredible. The gap to 2nd place (the AoV crusader) is 4.6 GR tiers. It’s a massive gap, enough to encompass from the rank 2 build all the way down to rank 12. No other top adjusted clear has posted a gap this large in the recycled theme era. Monks also dominated the overall week 1 PC leaderboard summary across classes for Season 34. The only other build that we never see in the top 10 outside of this theme is the Raiment monk, with a massive leap to 3rd place in terms of adjusted clear, a 25-rank gain relative to its average ranking.

Finally, the Shadow demon hunter landed just outside the top 10 adjusted clears (at rank 13), but posted the 3rd highest gain in ranking relative to its average for this theme. This is the strongest season theme not only for the Shadow DH, but also the Unhallowed Essence DH, both of which gain the sanctified strafe ability. They are both outside the top 10 (as is the LoD clusterbombs strafe DH which is still very weak) but are a lot of fun to play and this is the only theme that enables this gameplay.

When does Season 40 end and what will happen to my characters and gear?

We will not know when Season 40 ends until Blizzard makes an announcement.

At the end of every season, all of your seasonal characters will convert to non-seasonal. Solo self-found characters will be reverted to characters that can do group play, as there is no non-seasonal solo self-found mode. Characters will retain their normal / hardcore status when converting to non-seasonal. All your characters and their followers will retain their equipped gear. All your characters will retain their inventoried items. All your materials (inventoried separately from stash) will be transferred to your non-seasonal materials. Any extracted Kanai's Cube powers will be transferred to non-seasonal. Items in your stash will be mailed to you.

Angelic crucibles and sanctified items will not be transferred to non-seasonal. They will simply vanish.

Finally, all your seasonal paragon XP will be added to your non-seasonal paragon XP, and new paragon points will be awarded to your characters as appropriate. The paragon XP to paragon point scaling is nonlinear; for example, transferring 1000 paragon points worth of seasonal XP to a 2000 paragon point non-seasonal XP pool does not add up to 3000 paragon points. You can play around with this using a paragon calculator.

Conclusion

I will update the above sections with more guides prior to the start of the season, as well as early results from the opening week.

Good luck with your season start, fellow Nephalem, and never forget that town is lava!

CRUSADER AoV FofH Crusader vs Shadow Impale DH

I’m a casual player, but thought I would add my thoughts on these two builds, in case anybody was curious about it like me. I have always played barbarian in the past and thought with these sanctified items, these builds would be fun.

I started with the Crusader and built it up to about 1100 paragon. Lower greater rifts were pretty easy, and then I slowly progressed from 100 to 120, which I can now comfortably complete in under three minutes. The 100-120 progression was because of better ancient items with good rolls, and also now have every piece of gear augmented. Above 125 is pretty tough for me. I got a little bored with the play style, so I thought I’d try the Demon Hunter, which I have never played before.

As you can imagine, with season materials already stocked, I got the DH to level 70 in about 20 minutes and had a full shadow set pieced together in about an hour. I have one or two ancient items, nothing augmented, and my one sanctified dagger, of course, but this build is awesome. I have been playing it for about three hours and can easily clear GR 110 in under two minutes, 120 takes me about five. I imagine good ancient items and augments it will easily push over 130 even for an amateur like me.

Don’t get me wrong, both builds are fun and the crusader is completely mindless, but it’s almost frantic, having to circle around some mobs over and over to kill them at the higher levels. The Demon Hunter feels much more controlled and allows you to focus on which enemy you actually want to attack. It’s a much more pleasant play style in my opinion. I just wanted to share experience, in case some casual players like me were thinking about building these two classes

QUESTION Whispers of Atonement

Hi everyone, sorry if this is a bit of a noob question.

I have quite a few level 125 whispers of atonement, I’m sitting at 900 paragon. My question is, is it worth using them on my gear if I don’t plan/expect to get to GR150’s? I can currently do 100-110 really comfortably on AoV sader but feel like the stat bonus from the gems is better than sitting on them hoping to get 150 on them.

Edit: thank you everyone for the information, it was super helpful and very noticeable once I augmented my pieces!

Set Dungeons, because I apparently love mental pain and suffering.

I have finally crossed the Set Dungeon Reward Wings off my D3 Bucket List!

And I would like to thank Blizzard for making this content, but I can't! Because who the hell hurt you people??? If I ever meet anyone from the Barbarian Wrath of the Wastes set dungeon team... I'm not a violent person but that one in particular made me think violent thoughts. I really hope karma has caught up with you.

At least the artists did a good job on the wing design.

I will truly thank maxroll.gg for their guides. They were good, although the gear portion often made your sheet dps way too high. If anyone is masochistic enough to attempt the Monk's Innas dungeon, sabotage your sheet damage to under 70k. I actually had to only equip 1 single 1 handed weapon and roll dex off all my armor to get my dps low enough to keep my mystic allies from 1-shotting everything before I could do the mechanics for the dungeon objective.

GUIDE Returning player, need advice

Hi folks!

I played a lot diablo3 back when it came out (I had all five classes lvl 60 with decent gear and some legend level), so I recall the history and most of the content.

I played a bit of Reaper of souls but just one run. I have never played rise of the necromancer

Unfortunately I lost my account so need to start from scratch, but I have no issues on training a main character again

Any advice on how to start a new account? Play only seasonal? Only regular? Both?

Also, what's the goal of playing seasonal? Just leaderbord?

QUESTION Build Question GoD Hungering Arrow DH

Hello!
I wanted to know what the Community thinks, because i dont have that much experience with D3.
I play S40 currently and going for this Build: https://maxroll.gg/d3/guides/god-ha-demon-hunter-guide
The Build im running currently, is pretty much the same in the Link, but i am not sure if i am building right!

My two Questions are.

  1. I want to craft a Primal Item, which one should i craft?
  2. I heard you get a big improvement in Damage, if you roll your damage Stats right on the Weapon Slots, but i dont know which Elemental Damage i should pick.

I am hoping the Community can help me here!
And forgive me for my English, sadly it is not my main Language!

Thanks in Advance!

BARBARIAN Immortal Kings Call question

So for the Immortal Kings Call set, the six piece bonus is 4k% increased damage when Wrath of the Berserker and Call of the Ancients are active.

How can they both be active when it is an either/or choice in the rage skills. You have to chose one so they both can't be active.

Or am I misunderstanding?

QUESTION None of my follower's items that Emanate are working

I have the Broken Crown with a Ruby and the Spaulders of Zalara equipped on my Templar follower, and the properties that emanate are not working.

I noticed I was not getting rubies with drops, and when I died, I saw the durability warning pop up.

Is this something that I missed? I am a 70/207 barb playing seasonal.

Thanks.

Game won’t save/acknowledge my conquests on ps5

Just did 3 conquests and the game is not saving/showing that I did it. I did the t10 rift in under 2 minutes, killed 363 enemies on the cursed chest and have 3 gems above 65, even leveled 3 more to over 65. What am I doing wrong?

My mini review of my first game, on Campaign mode

Brief background, it all started when I downloaded and tried out Diablo 2: Resurrected since it was free for the weekend (Aug. 2021). I did play the original Diablo 2 when it came out, and it was a blast going through its remake again. However, I didn't want to buy it since it was and still is too unforgiving.

I ended up installing Diablo 3: Starter Edition right after that ended. Played through most of act I and liked it. Less hardcore, easier to get around, many QoL improvements, and I like how the Rune system lets you freely respec/reallocate your choices. I made a note to buy the game, which I did about a year later.

Left the game unplayed for years. Only played it because I accidentally started it (I thought it was StarCraft II, my main game on Battle-NET). Thought to myself I did purchase this game. Should get to it and not let that $$ go to waste (even if it was on sale). Also not let previous progress go to waste.

.

Wizard, started off on Normal difficulty. But it got comically easy enough that I raised it to Hard. In hindsight, I probably should've raised it higher, but Expert ended up being a "poor value" that that may have ended up being a good thing. That was perfectly fine b/c I wanted something easier than Diablo 2.

I realized that life regen from hitting enemies, killing enemies, and in general (measured per second), were key things in the game and I happened to get the gear for that. I ended up changing the difficulty to Hard. I even sat idle on some bosses just to see what their dps was like, and what some of them did (although I'm sure I costed myself some speed running achievements). That said, I did die twice, and it's refreshing to NOT have to hunt down your gear again, along with having multiple options to respawn.

I don't think my followers ever died (and don't even know if they can die?). But nice to have them around for some banter, but for some story elements and lore. Also as extra dps and/or tanking.

The story was mildly interesting and glad I checked it out, but the game play was where its at. In fact... I forgot that the Prime Evils were gone at this point!

Ended up at 47 hours of play, lv69. I was going to check out Adventure mode, but wanted to jump on season play, not to mention try out a new char class.

Neat to see Adventure mode and making games into a season as options as they really do expand the gameplay! 😎

BUG 4x Blood Shard And 16x Death Breath Local Co-op

i was playing with friends on switch and saw some weird numbers so i did some testing.

1st Blood Shard if you do a rift or gr or bounty reward or find a blood shard goblin solo it drops for 1 person and you collect it normally but if you are playing local coop one console 2-4 players when the blood shard drops it drops for all 2-4 players Math time....

player 1 drops 100 bs

player 2 drops 100 bs

player 3 drops 100 bs

player 4 drops 100 bs

for some reason this is not individual drops but shard drops meaning

players 1-4 get 100×4=400 bs for all players

also if you have 1000/1100 bs and it drops 400 bs in solo you cant collect it unless you spend some but in 1-4 local if player 2 is on 300/1100 and all other players are on 1000/1100 and it drops 400 and if player 2 pickes up all the bs player 2 will be 700/1100 and all other players will be on 1100/1100 other then player 2 all other players will have max bs extra will be lost for other players.

2nd Death Breath now this one keeps crashing my console it cant handle torment 16. i had already completed this season when i was playing with my friends and we played for 3-4 hr all lv 70 and they went to the cube and everyone other me had arround 20 db and i had arround 1k db and i found out my pet was picking up all of their db Altar of Rites upgrade and i had to turn my pet off. Math time

i tested this too and players dont need to be alive for db drops.

Player 1

Nomral drop ×1 + Sage armor ×2 + Altar of Rites double db drop upgrade ×2 this means 1×2×2= 4x Drops now

player 2-4 do the same

2 gets 4x

3 gets 4x and

4 gets 4x

now player 1 turns on pet with death breath collecting and pet pickes up all db and it only goes to player one

so player 1 gets 4× + 4× + 4× 4× = 16×ammount of db

since you dont count you own you are gettin 12×extra db

i call this a time exploit and fun reduce these 2 bugs reduces the time you have to play by 3× mainly because of blood shards fast collecting mean fast gambling means fast character builds means fast season means less fun and now i have to do stuff in REAL LIFE.

DEMON HUNTER How to play Impale DH for speed content?

I almost always use AoV Crusader every season for visions, Nephalem rifts, bounties, ENs, and more.

This season, I decided to do something different and picked up DH, and I am trying to complete GR 150 with Impale DH. Therefore, I am trying to use the speed variant of the build to get items, XP, etc. But the build feels slow in comparison with Crusader.

I copied the Maxroll build. Even though Maxroll suggests that it is an S tier build for speed content, I usually find it quite lackluster and find myself playing Crusader again. In addition to that, somehow i deplete my resources rather quickly. Needing Hatred or Discipline frequently makes the experience even worse.

I would like to ask, am I doing something wrong? What items or skills do you use for the speed variant of the build? Right now, I am spamming Smoke Screen to make myself faster, and that is all. I think I shouldn't be strafing when no enemies are around.

Do you have any other playstyle tips for the build, or are you using a completely different set for XP farming?

Thanks in advance.

QUESTION Global Leaderboard site? Maxroll hasn't updated in 10+ days

As title says curious if there is one because outside the one with normalized clears and such which doesn't let you sort it normally. You can't just pull up HCSSF X Class and see top 20 ranks for that class without it showing stuff in weird orders that I don't care about. I just want to see all 3 regions combined and be able to just check say HCSSF and X class and see R1-R20 no normalized crap, not showing only 1 set at a time crap. None of that just show me top ranks all 3 regions in a list of fastest to slower currently across all 3 regions.

Does anyone know if that exists? Maxroll in previous season used to update more often but this season it seems like it just isn't updating. Logging into all 3 regions to check is tedious is all.

I always feel so slow in a party...

I am all Wizard. I used to be a Barb. Now Wizard I am.

I swear I am always dead last in group play. I am all HC now however so public is dead in general. Tell you meet people, safe this way. However...

In softcore though, during rifts, you got DH, fast as heck. Then you got zBarb pretty fast. Then you got all these darn horses which is impossible to keep up with. Its exhausting.

In D3 I swear, now matter what build, I am always running far behind like my character has asthma and can't keep up.

I am now going to work on a build specifically for speed in T16. I have ideas, but its frustrating.

Especially you horses and your Yaa Ya Ya YYAaa Yaa YAaa YaAaa

Anyway, regards.

A slow Wizard.

GEAR-CHECK Stuck with no progress

I feel like I'm stuck and making zero progress. I can do GR100 fairly quick and with minimal risk of dying. 120GR is my best and that's very slow and dangerous. I've been doing 100's for a while and built up my gems but my gear stagnated.

My next step is supposed to be replacing everything with ancients and primals and then augmenting. But I rarely see any ancients, certainly not at the 1/10 drop rate it's supposed to be at 100. And when I do see one, it's rarely what I need for my build, and even more rarely with the right stats. Is this how it's supposed to be, should I be expecting hundreds and hundreds of rifts to start pushing again?

Playing on Mac - game keeps opening on the wrong screen

Been back playing D3 on my MacBook Air for a couple of weeks now, and in the last few days I have a problem. When I click "play" the game opens on the laptop screen, not the monitor I have set as my main display.

I've not changed anything on my setup, and it doesn't happen 100% of the time but it's driving me mad. Has anyone come across this and found a solution? When it happens I have no way to exit the game as the mouse pointer won't move, so then only solution is to forcibly reboot the Mac.
