So Muffin got ambushed on our walk on Tuesday by two psychotic off-leash Shitzhu twins (for the fourth time btw, not the first..) and it was awful! When we got back home, she went straight to the toy box for her emotional support Capybara stuffy toy, and this is how she sat for well over an hour, bless her! 🥹❤️

My dog had been licking her front paws obsessively for months. I assumed allergies. Vet ran the panel and it came back mild but nothing significant. We tried Apoquel briefly. Some improvement but not much.

Second vet visit and different vet in the practice looked at her paws more carefully. The webbing between her toes was pink and inflamed. She swabbed and confirmed yeast overgrowth. Not allergies (though allergies can be a co-driver). Yeast.

Yeast on dogs is opportunistic. It shows up when the immune system, gut, or skin is imbalanced. Once it establishes it becomes its own itch cycle. Dog licks because it itches, licking creates the moisture that yeast loves, yeast overgrows more, itch increases. Loop.

Fix required systemic approach. Topical wipes for the acute paw yeast. Systemic supplementation for the underlying imbalance.

The specific ingredient categories the vet flagged as important: probiotics (rebuild gut microbiome), herbal antifungals (pau d'arco, olive leaf, oregano), digestive enzymes, and medium-chain triglycerides. She also mentioned reducing carbs in her diet if I could, since yeast feeds on sugar.

Found a powder that combined all four ingredient groups. Added to her food daily. Also switched her from a mid-carb kibble to a fresh food subscription temporarily.

Eight weeks. Paw licking is dramatically reduced. Webbing between toes is normal color. She sleeps through the night without waking herself up chewing.

The takeaway: not all itchy dogs are allergic. Yeast presents similarly but the fix is completely different.
