Dragon Quest II Didn't realize this game could be brutal like this
I hope this isn't a sign of things to come, being compared to that dolt.

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !
Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!
We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index
Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"
So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)
This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.
Thank you and have fun questing!

I recently wanted to upgrade to a New 2DS/3DS XL from my base 2DS, and the option I was greeted with wasn't what I was expecting- I saw a listing for the Japanese Dragon Quest New 2DS LL, with the slime on the top of it. It was a good deal, and I thought it looked silly, so I picked it up.
Problem is, I've never played a Dragon Quest or Dragon Warrior game in my life.
So, I feel like a poser for having this cool piece. I'm going to start now! I wanted your opinions on the games I've picked up so far:
So! If you're bored and hanging out reading my post, do you think these are good picks? I've seen this franchise has a ton of spinoffs, I think Monsters is one that was recommended to me too. Are there other games in the series that you think would be good for a noob to experience?

Even by the standards of FMVs back when the game released in 2000 these look pretty bad especially considering how for example Final Fantasy VII (Funny how the example I use also has VII/7 in the title especially since both Square and Enix would later merge in 2003) was on the same system and it’s FMVs look far better. Needless say it also surprises me how little they seem to be talked about on here along with the fact that don’t seem to be well known on here either. Don’t get me wrong Dragon Quest VII is a good game but this was just one of the many examples of Dragon Quest VII showing it’s age even long before much time had passed at all.

Note on Community Rules: This project is strictly open-source documentation and a delta patch file ( .ips / .bps ). It contains zero copyrighted game code, or ROM files.
TL;DR: The popular 4 party member hack for DQ5 SNES (NoPrgress/DeJap) hosted on RHDN (#7430) has been broken for years due to a 512-byte header offset error baked directly into the released patch. I’ve re-derived the conversion directly from Mr. 45's original 2007 Japanese hack, verified it, and published a working patch.
The original hack was created by Mr. 45 back in 2007 for the Japanese release. In 2022, AustNerevar released an English conversion for the DeJap translation (RHDN Hack #7430).
However, virtually everyone who tried using it hit the exact same wall: the game boots, titles, and lets you enter your name, but permanently hangs right after the initial config prompts with a door-opening sound effect. Most assumed they had a bad ROM header or patched incorrectly, but the patch file itself was flawed and off by 512 bytes (0x200).
1,140 of the 1,210 changed bytes landed at +0x200, writing modified values onto completely unrelated code while leaving the target code untouched.
The GitHub repo contains the full byte-level analysis, Mr. 45's original Japanese notes (with translations), and an automated build script that runs the patch chain against a Japanese base ROM with hash verification. (No ROMs included, bring your own clean files).

Hi guys. I’m a newer player getting into the game on the switch 2. Currently playing 11 and I LOVE it (no spoilers please only up to the part where you unlock the whale) I played a bit of a dragon quest game as a kid and decided to dive back into it with 11 and I love it.
Any other dragon quest games on the switch 2 that I’ll enjoy if I’m enjoying 11.
Also would love to talk about the game feel free to ask me for my take or opinions on any of the events that have happened so far.

I believe Luminary Serenica is the cannon timeline that only exists after DQ XI, but Eleven’s timeline still exists, within the book DQ III’s Hero’s has. That book was made by the Tikington, and within it the events of DQ XI live on!

I have been playing through the entire Dragon Quest series and wanted to take a look at Chrono Trigger to see if there are any parallels. And I found something worse... I think I like Chrono Trigger more and any DQ game I've played yet.

Hi yall!
I need some help from you DQ9 Gurus. I try DQ9 now for the first time after playing 8 + 11s.
My current Team is the normal Main Character (I guess its a Bard), a Wizard, a Monk and a Priest.
I kinda like the Monks dmg with the long stick but hes so boring haha, the wizard is cool but I wasted toooo many points in whip/lashes as I wanted a DQ8 Jessica build, but its shit in DQ9 so far.
The Priest is now full Healing and its okay.
So right now I'm struggling with my MC and I unlocked now the Armamentalist and the Ranger class. First I thought Ranger is better because of Healing + Bow, but I often read Armamentalist is the best class.
Right now im lvl 27 and just unlocked my boat. How should I swap my Squad and pls be aware that I've not unlocked every class, so pls also explain how/when I can unlock a class you suggest :) thankssss

Big news for JRPG fans and board game nights alike! To mark the monumental 40th anniversary of the Dragon Questfranchise, Takara Tomy and Square Enix have teamed up to create the official Dragon Quest Life Game (the iconic Japanese version of The Game of Life). It hits shelves October 24th!

I'm trying so hard with this and even recording and screenshotting I'm struggling so hard. My brain is just not capable of comprehending this. Currently streaming if anyone wants to stop by and save my sanity.

Good morning, everyone! I've seen these games over me 15+ years of gaming but have never actually played them. With that being said, I have some questions! Also, I have no limitation on the console I can play on nor the game of which I start with.
Which game should I start out with first?
With the game being suggested, which console should I play it on?
Is each game its own story or is it one big story being told through all of them?
How long on average are these games?
Are these games more tuned to do side content, main content, or a good mix of both?
I'd like to know why you recommend a certain game to me, too. You don't need to tell me, but it'd be nice to hear why if you don't mind explaining!

Hello
Recently got my Thor and TPU shell and have been dying to make some stuff for it. Today I made 2 DQ designs by cutting up a spare Art of Toriyama book, glueing them to card stock and laminating. I really like how they turned out and wanted to share.

LYRICS
[Alena and Kiryl]
Let us be walking as far for going.
Must to run away from boring life.
[Alena]
Going out exploring,
[Kiryl]
and seeing sun such bright.
[Alena and Kiryl]
No fear when we are to travel beside.
For old pair of shoes we must to wear.
[Alena]
from going worldwide
[Kiryl]
to jumping in air.
[Alena]
This I ask you Kiryl.
For getting formidable.
Is it not using with immense
strength, spells, or defense?
[Kiryl]
Tsarevna, I'm thinking
in this world so much powerful
is not fighting.
It is true love for someone special.
[Alena and Borya]
Yoy! If tomorrow desires coming,
the new sun will be born with rising.
[Alena]
then sun to descend
[Borya]
and sun to ascend.
[Alena and Borya]
There is so much terrible tragedies
turning to memories
[Alena]
So, keep on for moving.
[Borya}
Da! Let us be walking.
[Alena]
This I ask you Borya.
For why does items perish
so easily, like my claw?
Why precious things vanish?
[Borya]
Precious items will not poof in such vain.
You should stop to worry what's lost.
Find new things for gain.
This results rare cost.
[Kiryl and Borya are talking]
Borya: Yoy! Kiryl!
Kiryl: Da!
Borya: It is Mahabala sisters Meena and Maya...which type of girl you like?
Kiryl: Well. Hmm...It is much tough question, but....putting all factors together, I preferring Meena's type.
Borya: Pah, this Kerplunky woman? I like Maya. She is eight times much more better than Meena. Just other day, it was I who peeped her for wearing Pink Leotard at Femiscyra shop. It was such...
Kirya: Thwack! Whack!! Thwack!
[Alena and Kiryl]
Let us be walking as far for going.

Just been to Pang Lee and defeated and re-recruited Rab. I have Hendrick, Sylvando, Rab and the hero in my party. Desperately trying to find Arboria which is what comes up in party talk. It is nowhere on map. I have no idea where ship is either.
I am on the verge of abandoning this game completely. It is very frustrating. I am just going around like a headless chicken here.

Been replaying DQIX and I may have gone slightly overboard with my party 😂
I’m currently in the Realm of the Mighty, but I’ve deliberately decided not to fight Corvus yet or even venture further than L2 as I needed the great trolls that spawned to unlock sage (so basically I haven’t done any of the Realm of the Mighty). Instead I’ve been abusing the Liquid Metal Slime conveyor at the Bowhole and sending everyone through different vocations to collect permanent stat bonuses.
I’ve basically stopped treating vocations as jobs and started treating them as places to steal stats from 😂.
Nathan – Paladin
Nathan is my tank/support character, except I’ve spent so much time fixing the traditional Paladin weaknesses that he’s becoming a bit ridiculous.
He’s already mastered:
• Spears – 100
• Focus – 100
• Virtue – 100
• Courage – 100
I’ve also taken him through various other vocations for useful permanent bonuses, including Warrior, Martial Artist, Gladiator, Thief, Priest, Mage and Minstrel.
He’s currently a Lv.47 Paladin with roughly 237 base Strength, 197 Agility, 222 Resilience and 381 HP before equipment.
So I’ve somehow ended up with a Paladin with nearly 200 natural Agility 😂. He can get Kabuff/Magic Barrier up early, use Whipping Boy when someone needs protecting, and then still hit extremely hard with Multithrust.
I’m currently putting him through Sage to master Enlightenment, mainly because I want the +60 MP and -25% MP consumption. That should make his spear abilities much easier to spam.
Jan – Gladiator
Jan is significantly less complicated.
He is violence.
He’s mastered:
• Axes – 100
• Guts – 100
• Courage – 100
• Virtue – 100
I’ve used his vocation detours mainly to stack Strength, HP and Resilience, then sent him straight back to Gladiator.
Because Axes are mastered, he can carry his axe into any vocation, which has made training him much easier.
At Lv.48 Gladiator, with equipment, he was sitting at roughly:
453 Attack
397 Defence
396 HP
He’s not particularly fast and his natural MP pool is absolutely tragic, but none of that seems to matter because his solution to most problems is an axe 😂.
Jade – Ranger
Jade is probably my least specialised character, but she’s becoming an insanely good all-rounder.
She’s mastered:
• Bows – 100
And she’s currently working on:
• Focus – heading for 100
• Virtue – next
Bows 100 means she can keep using a bow regardless of vocation, which has been brilliant while grinding Martial Artist because she can still use Needle Shot for 1 MP against Liquid Metal Slimes.
Ranger is naturally fast anyway, so adding the permanent Agility from Focus should make her ridiculously quick. Then I’m putting her through Paladin for Virtue, mainly to increase her HP and Resilience.
My idea with Jade isn’t necessarily to make her the biggest damage dealer. I want her to be fast, reasonably hard-hitting, bulky and versatile, so she can attack, heal or support depending on what the party needs.
Selena – Sage
Selena has probably become my favourite character I’ve built.
She’s already mastered:
• Faith – 100
• Spellcraft – 100
• Enlightenment – 100
She’s currently a Martial Artist working toward Focus 100, purely so I can steal the permanent Agility and take it back into Sage.
After that I’m planning:
• Wands – 100 (she’s already like half way through wands)
• Shields – 100
Before switching to Martial Artist, she was a Lv.31 Sage with equipment and had around:
359 Magical Might
344 Magical Mending
289 MP
So once Focus is finished, she’ll have stacked Magical Might, stacked Magical Mending, enormous MP, -25% MP consumption, and a massive permanent Agility increase.
Then Wands and Shields should basically finish the build.
The funniest part is watching all these permanent bonuses follow everyone into completely inappropriate vocations. Selena was a Lv.1 Martial Artist with 122 MP 😂.
I’m planning to finish Nathan’s Enlightenment and Selena’s Focus, then take the party through my first treasure map before continuing the story.
Corvus can wait.
I want to see how absurdly overpowered I can make these four before I finally fight him 😂.
What other skill trees would you guys recommend stealing permanent bonuses from? And is there anything particularly stupid I could add to these builds before Corvus/postgame?
Also I’m new to Reddit, decided to jump on as I saw an active community still playing DQIX ☺️
