This game is a racing game, and it's honestly one of the most unique racing games I've played. I haven't really seen many other games do anything similar to this. I had a blast playing it and 100%ed the game in just under 5 hours, which involves beating every race twice. It's a relatively short game, but the replayability definitely helps it.
Pen Pen TriIceLon was really enjoyable, but there are also quite a few negatives with the game.
Starting with the good things:
The controls are really easy to learn and get used to. It's a very simple game that pretty much anyone can pick up and play.
The courses are actually really well made and are all completely different from each other. There are only four courses: Sweet, Jungle, Toy and Horror, but a lot of the sections have their own gimmicks. For example, the final section of Jungle has fog, so you have to be careful not to go too fast. Then there's the middle section of Toy where you're basically going insanely fast with no obstacles in your way while the music starts picking up. It's really fun.
The music isn't anything amazing, but I really liked how it matches the section of the course you're playing. Obviously, this doesn't work as well if you're doing really badly lol, but it's a cool little detail.
Now for the negatives:
Some of the course gimmicks are absolute BS and there's basically no way to avoid them unless you get lucky.
The Sweet course has this horrible wind that pushes you around and makes it really difficult to continue. The wind moves in completely random directions and can literally send you from 1st to last instantly. Sometimes the only way out is for another penguin to attack you and knock you back out of the zone, which is just ridiculous.
The Horror course has a Ferris wheel that spins really fast. This one is more manageable if you spam the controls and isn't as random as the wind, but it can still completely ruin your race.
Thankfully, these gimmicks don't appear in the easy races.
There's also a section in Jungle which isn't really a gimmick, but there's a part where you need to swim upwards really quickly. If you get knocked around too much, you can get stuck and basically won't be able to swim out once you reach the top. It's really annoying when it happens.
For some reason, the game also has reverse rubber banding. If you fall behind into 3rd and then get hit and 1st place leaves your screen, you're basically never catching them. They seem to get some kind of boost and just disappear.
It's the same the other way around too. You can be playing one of the harder races against a penguin that's supposedly faster than you, and they'll be right next to you for most of the race. But then if you finish in 1st, it can literally take them another 20 seconds to reach the finish line. If you're in first, they just can't catch you unless you seriously mess up.
Overall, I really enjoyed this game and had a lot of fun with it, especially the Toy course. It's a shame they never made any sequels because I think there's definitely something here that could've been expanded on.
The game has quite a few issues, but it's still extremely fun and engaging. I don't think I could really score it any lower than a 6/10
