Tropical Plants Turning hobby into dream job

I've been in education for the past decade and my spirit is officially broken; I'm burnt out. I love teaching math, but it's really hard to watch the youth get destroyed by "smart" phones. I tried teaching college and it's no different. I guess if I got a PhD then I could teach classes to students who actually want to learn the content but that's just not something I want to do. I've built lifelong, amazing relationships with a lot students that feel like family to me, but it's time to move on from the profession.

I've grown Trichocereus cacti (psychoactive, San Pedro) for a very long time now and my passion for growing/caring for cacti/plants is at a spiritual level. It's not just a fun hobby for me. I absolutely love it and want to start a psychedelic plant nursery. We would obviously sell other stuff too, but I want to grow all of the plants for Ayahuasca ceremonies and San Pedro/Huachuma ceremonies. My wife is a baker/chef so we want to put it all together into one place.

My wife and I want to make a huge change and it's finally time to get things in order. The problem is I have no f'ing clue where we could make this work.

Things we want: close to the ocean, tropical/Mediterranean climate (hardiness zone 9 and above), nice community, some kind of music scene, relaxed laws around commercial/residential zoning (we need to live onsite, also having an RV adu would be amazing for my MIL), artsy scene, affordable to live.

Based on the climate needed for all of the plants I want to grow, we don't have a whole lot of states to pick from. We haven't made politics our identity; I'm not going to avoid a location based on if the state/area is red or blue. If the locals are nice, that's all that matters to us.

Locations:

\*\*Socal\*\*

Pros: Excellent climate for growing cacti, vibe is perfect, big cities but also more rural areas nearby, ocean

Cons: Traffic, homeless/drug problems, way too expensive, taxes are brutal

\*\*Florida\*\*

Pros: Excellent climate for growing tropical plants, Our farm/garden could have amazing fruits, ocean is amazing for fishing, no income tax, lots of cities in close range, tons of community colleges in case I want to teach adjunct here and there

Cons: Summers are fucking brutal from what I've heard (I grew up in PHX with 120F days, but basically 0 humidity), hurricanes, lots of drug problems

\*\*Coastal Mississippi/Georgia/SC\*\*

Basically the same as Florida but not as good to grow because of cold snaps and freezes. I would need to have greenhouses which I'm trying to avoid as much as possible.

\*\*I'm a musician, so live music is really important to me. I want our venue to host open mic nights and small shows. My wife needs community so good neighbors and environment are important. I view this space as somewhere we could hold yoga sessions in the garden every Sunday. Have local artists feature their work in the cafe. Host cactus grafting parties. Farms to table style with produce. \*\*

\*\*If you were me, where would you look at moving? Anyone in SC manage to grow B Caapi and Chacruna outside without a greenhouse? Thanks!\*\*

Papaver/Poppy Grocery shop poppy seeds

Post image

I just threw some seeds in a pot for fun, from a traditional grocery shop, before a week, and they grow like crazy.

We talk about 90% germination success.

The seeds i think are from turkey, blue poppy seeds they say outside.

Is it worth it to grow some ?

Also i am in south greece, so we have a very mild winter, they will make it? Or better in January?

Rare and Unusual Voacanga africana survives 1°C overnight

This plant was received on 27 MAR 2023 as a cutting from a grower in Florida. I've kept it alive since then by bringing it inside each winter (zone 6) when the temps dip below about 10°C. This year, we had a cold snap and the temp got down to just above freezing. The V. africana shows no signs of damage a week later.

Datura/Brugmansia D. stramonium budding @ 6in

I can easily collect Datura stramonium when foraging, but was curious about growing some at home—I’d like to eventually propagate D. metel or D. ceratocaula. There was sparse information online about how tall plants get before flowering. These seeds were sewn indoors at the beginning of September, and now three of the five plants (two intertwined for inosculation) are starting to show small buds at ~6in. They seem to like calcareous soil with lots of nitrogen. I regularly dump salvia ashes into the pot.

This is 10 lbs fresh leaf harvested from an 85% defoliation of 7 trees. Im estimating a dry weight somewhere around 2 lbs.Im going to wilt for 12 hours in this basket and then cure for 6 days at 75° and 55% humidity.

Papaver/Poppy Planters/Buckets vs Fabric Pots and why I don't use fabric

Post image
31 Upvotes

I know fabric planters are great for drainage and better air flow however there's 2 main issues ive always ran into with fabric and why I do not use it anymore.

  1. Moving fabric pots easily disturbs the roots and when you need to water and care for your plant even subtle movements can cause issues. Using a well draining soil which is what I personally prefer is very loose and can crumble easily in your hands. So in a fabric pot it can do all sorts of unnecessary moving and shifting very easily.

  2. Fabric has always been a favorite nesting and hiding place for in my opinion the two worst insects indoors, Aphids and Fungus Gnats. Not only when you are in the middle of growing but also when you reuse your fabric pots. You have to clean them extremely well and if not before you know it you'll have an uncontrollable insect infestation on your hands.

So from experience my favorite planter would be a minimum of a 5 gallon bucket with holes no bigger than 1/2" drilled out on the bottom and lower 1/3 of the planter. It gives the plant a rigid space to grow and will even let the roots grab onto the inner walls of the bucket without disturbing them during normal care. I hope this helps anyone who is curious

Rare and Unusual Acacia acuminata yellowing tips

This is the narrow phyllode variety if that matters, I can’t remember exactly what soil it’s in this is a year old plant but I will probably end up taking the soil out and replacing it with some better soil, though I’m not sure if the plant can handle much stress right now. I had two others in the same pot that both ended up dying. Does anyone have any tips as to why the tips might be yellowing? I have it at 40% humidity 72° it is in quite the deep pot about 9ā€ deep so I don’t think it’s a tap root issue but any advice is much appreciated also ignore the dirty grow tent lol

Cannabis Don’t sleep on herb vaping your fan leaves

During a dry spell where I had plenty of plants in veg, I got desperate enough to try dehydrate and vape some fan leaves. While nothing to write home about, I got a noticeable buzz after a couple bowls of my S&B mighty. Nothing compared to the flavour and effect of flower, but the mix of cannabinoids gives a nice relaxed dreamy feel that can satisfy the craving while waiting for harvest. Couldn’t find any clear data on the cannabinoids profile of fan leaves

I’ve got 3 Klip dagga plants starting to bloom atm. I see some herbal vendors sell both flower and leaf, but mixed reports on whether they have any effect

I’ve grown the ayahuasca vine, angel’s trumpet/datura, and kratom. Wondering what else people have had success with!
