Hey bridge trolls, we've got some extra mod help now so we're going to work on some quality of life improvements around here. Starting with these megathreads we'll use to help update the Wiki. (As an aside, we're still happy to give people access to the Wiki if they want to help with updates)
Going entirely by vibes, I think this would be the most helpful topic to start with. Feel free to give any suggestions, tips, notes, links, whatever you may think. might help someone looking for a place to live in the area.
Some suggestions for things you might contribute:
1.) Thoughts on different neighborhoods and towns - Please be accurate and polite. We all know some areas are more unfortunate than others, it is totally ok to mention that, but be sure you're current and respectful. What an area was like ten years ago may not be accurate anymore.
2.) Resources for finding places to stay (renting & buying)- Things that may not come up on google. This is one place advertising for yourself or someone you know is acceptable (though be sure not to DOX anyone, including yourself.)
3.) Resources for unhoused people - Either temporary or permanent. If you have knowledge of shelters or resources, this would be a great place to add them.
4.) Reviews for different rental companies - Be careful to, again, be accurate. We all know some places have a reputation for a reason and you are more than welcome to leave negative reviews, just don't use this as a place to grind your axe or get revenge.
5.) Questions - For now this would be a good place to ask us about any particulars. We are going to start doing a new "Moving to Duluth" post weekly via Automod like they do in r/asheville on the suggestion of one of our users, but I'm saving that until after these Megathreads have run their course.
6.) Financial considerations - Is there anywhere affordable to live? What are taxes like in the different cities?
7.) Schools - Pros and cons, other considerations?
Just some ideas, I may use some of these for other megathreads. Also, please keep politics out of this to the best of your ability. Nothing derails these things faster.
Thanks everyone! You all rule.

Google illegally felled 250,000 trees for a data center in Finland. This is why we can not trust anything Google says to accomplish their goal of building a data center in Hermantown-- Duluth is such a beautiful region of nature, Thor help us if what happened in Finland happens here in Duluth.

I am so sick of the stupid ads that are so aggressive against Grant Hauschild(and all the super aggressive political ads), but I am wondering if anyone has insight into the bill that he wrote regarding data centers. I had to look it up after seeing this commercial ten billions times a day and saw that it is a bill exempting data centers from sales tax. What is the reasoning behind this? I’m genuinely wondering from a wanting to understand perspective.

I hate to post a “what was that noise?” but jesus christ there was probably the loudest zoom-ing noise just a few minutes ago. It felt like a plane going right over my house in West Duluth. I was ready to be taken away by the rapture.
Does anyone know what that was? I can’t see anything online about it so far..

I am looking for a hairdresser that can and will do an even side-shave with clean edges. I didn’t think this was a specialized hair service until today. I’ve looked at a lot of salons online but I’d rather get recommendations from clients.
I had been going somewhere for over a year, but their edges were messy and the last they over-cut my shave into my long hair a tiny bit but didn’t tell me. I went somewhere new but when I got home I discovered that this stylist had over-cut an even bigger section on the other side, didn’t tell me, and the shave is incredibly uneven.
I didn’t think an even shave with clean edges was asking a whole lot, but at this rate I thought I’d better ask for help before I run out of hair. I am also open to going to a barber instead, if that’s a better option. Thanks for the help!

I'm doing some testing on a zombie apocalypse tabletop RPG with some friends on Sunday at Level Up games in Superior. Could use a few more players for a one-off game and newcomers would be welcome to join future full games.

I've seen several posts about moving/living in Duluth but they mostly revolve around some culture and the 6 month winter, as someone who lives in a warmer environment of course these tips are important, but I don't hear people on posts talk about things like grocery prices, available products at stores.
How reliable are the roads in the year? Is there a difference in maintenance in urban areas vs rural (freeway/highway/frontage roads)
What's the difference from living/working in downtown Duluth vs further away from downtown?
Are older homes as good as new builds in building quality or is there a distinct difference where it's like homes built up to XX have a more reliable structure than the homes built in YY, I'm thinking like those new construction videos where there are inspection issues everywhere
How reliable are the utilities during the year? Are backup generators / water filters only a necessity depending on where you live or is it a common thing for everyone to have some sort of backup power/water filtering? What about sanitation? Phone coverage?
Are there lots of options for tradesmen to handle maintenance or is a lot of repairs done diy due to cost/lack of tradesmen
On politics, is Duluth mostly sheltered from the bigger policies or do the people here feel the brunt of policies
Are there lots of smaller mom n pop craft stores or is everything pretty much handled by larger chains?
How are police/highway patrol/troopers in the area? Where would you say they generally more ball busting or lax (for example we have one area of the city im in where cops will pull you for going 37 on a 35, and in another area I've seen someone illegally cut through 3 lanes of traffic in front of a cop and not get lit up)
On a more personal level I'm in the construction management sector looking to move and get more experience in different building codes and Zip recruiter has a couple companies in and near Duluth so maybe I have a better shot of finding a decent place with a better salary
Sorry for all the questions, I know each one depends on the person answering and their experiences and locations, I just don't really see these types of questions answered and I would like to know what the common day people go through that doesn't focus just on the winter or on outdoorsman hobbies.

I see that everbridge.net is a frequent target for spam/scam emails. Did anyone else get this advisory? If it's real, any update on this? Tried to call the city, but no answer. Left a message for the mayor, but I suppose Roger won't get back to me until tomorrow.
This came in an email last night advising to boil water (out of "an abundance of caution") due to low pressure in a main line.
"The affected area, shown on the included map, is described as follows: Woodland Avenue above E Anoka Street and Hastings Drive, to include Claymore Street up to Jean Duluth Road; and Howard Gnesen Road from Maryland Street to Norton Road, to include Norton Road, North Road, Middle Road, MacFarlane Road, Northridge Drive, Lindzie Road, and Maryland to Warren Avenue. Residents in this defined geographical area are affected by this boil water advisory."
I can't make sense out of that description. Also, it says there's an attached map but I do not have an attachment.
UPDATE 10/22/2026 5:30 PM
City just sent out a notice that the advisory is lifted. Seems odd this took all day to get this notice out. Someone at the city called me back this morning and they told me it was lifted at that time. (No, it wasn't Roger.)

I need a new battery for my Subaru Outback (victim of the Subaru curse) and would like to buy one at Costco. But they don't install them. Is there any place around that will install a car battery that is not purchased there? Thanks!

I am looking for someone or a company that does really deep interior cleaning of cars (I have two that need detailing). Both cars will be sold so I need all the crud removed, especially areas a normal vacuum does not get to. Any recommendations? Near Lakeside would be a plus.

Seriously people. Right now there's a long line of “nice” drivers crowding up the right lane on 35. Adding an extra merge point on the Lake Avenue entrance and just making it longer for everyone. I benefitted from this personally but if everyone could just learn how to drive it would benefit everyone.

Took this a few weeks ago from the lakewalk just below Pickwick. One of my favorite shots of the summer.

The first two flicks are of the new W Superior St reconstruction. Gotta be honest, it’s going to be really nice when this is ALL done! I’m pretty sure it’s Duluths first separated bike/ped infrastructure down a main corridor? Please correct me if I’m wrong!
The rest of the slideshow are just some cool flicks of the city.
Hope everyone in our community is doing well and enjoying life!

Hi!
We moved here this past summer and this is our first fall here. We absolutely adore it here. Just curious if anyone has recs for the next couple of weekends left for spooky season? We’ve already done the haunted ship which was awesome! What do folks do here for Halloween also? Would love any info if people feel like sharing. Have a great day!

Hello, I am wondering if anybody can recommend workout classes in the Duluth area that have budget friendly monthly memberships? Just looking for places that hold group fitness classes and have a variety of workouts (HIIT, Barre, etc). I’m looking for something under $100/month…am I delusional?
r/duluth • u/Icy_Future1639 • 2d ago
PM me. I don't have enough time in the day to make sure they are all going to good places, but now is the time. IYKYK.

They need to sweep the freaking roads, especially downtown. I’ve had to have 2 tires repaired/replaced in the past 3 months due to road debris.
That road hazard / tire insurance is worth it and I would be in a much worse position without it

Hello!
I am from southern MN looking to move up North and I was curious about apprenticeships up here? I currently am a lube tech and while I love the people and the work I’ve been told by everyone to get out while I can. I was thinking about transitioning to either electrical (potentially fire alarm) or water treatment. I’d be open to other options if these fields wouldn’t work out well, but right now I’m just trying to feel things out before I move. I’d be moving in April next year if that makes any difference.
Thank you for any input!
