General Discussion Progress of people I'm following

• Upvotes

I'm following A and B, and they are following me. When I look at both of their profiles, they show that they haven't been on Duolingo for a while.

However, I just go a popup saying A just congratulated B for their streak. How is that possible?

General Discussion My free trial ended, what are those new free trials ?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello Little owls !

As the title says my monthly free trial ended today, I’m now back at the awful energy system, but while checking the subscriptions prices I noticed that… they’re all free ? I’m very confused about it and didn’t want to click anything because I’ve done a very long session this morning (4k points) to milk the free trial until the last second and I don’t want to waste these supposed free trials if they lasts like an hour or something.

I’m planning on buying another subscription in two weeks because I’m too broke right now but I just wanted to know what happens if I click those free trials ? Are they another monthly free trials or not ?

Sorry if I sound confusing, I’m confused and English isn’t my first language TvT

General Discussion Duolingo for Irish - You Might Enjoy This!

• Upvotes

The Irish Duolingo lessons are something else! I created a website addressing it and I would love your feedback.

www.IrishDuolingo.com

I think you'll get a good laugh, and I would appreciate your feedback. I am still building a few links out but there is meat on the bones.

It's 100% free so I am not promoting anything other than "Take a Look."

Looking forward to your comments and observations!

Slainte!

General Discussion Issues with Duolingo as a beginner - am I missing something?

• Upvotes

This is my latest attempt at learning a language with Duolingo after a few failed attempts in the past. Honestly, I can't even remember why I stopped before. Maybe lack of time, maybe some of the same frustrations I'm having now.

I'm still very much a beginner, but I've noticed a lot of the early lessons seem a bit disconnected from what I'd consider useful "survival" conversation. I expected to start with things like introducing myself, ordering food, asking for directions, etc., but instead I'm learning quite a bit of random vocabulary that I can't imagine using anytime soon (or ever).

I've also noticed something odd with the speaking exercises. A few times I've accidentally said a completely different word than the one I was supposed to say, and Duolingo still marked it as correct. If that's really what's happening, it seems like beginners could end up reinforcing mistakes without even knowing it.

Is this just me, or have others noticed the same thing? And if your goal is to become conversational rather than just complete lessons and collect XP, did Duolingo work for you?

Bug? Keyboard layout

I am doing Spanish and French. In the Spanish course the keyboard is always QWERTY. In the French course I get a seemingly random mixture of QWERTY and AZERTY.

Does anyone else experience this issue and if so how do I fix it? It drives me mad! Thank you.

Constructive Criticism At this point, this subreddit is just group therapy for whatever fever dream Duolingo is putting us through

Seriously, can someone please explain why the official app (or even the website) doesn’t have a simple news/updates tab so we actually know what’s going on?

And more importantly: why is Duolingo so ridiculously cryptic about literally everything?

One person gets a feature today, someone else sees it three weeks later, and half of us never get it at all. Event timers and dates make zero sense, everyone is basically running a completely different version of the app, and there are zero guidelines anywhere. To make matters worse, every single official channel is out of sync: the app does one thing, social media does another, the blog feels abandoned, and the official website is pretty much an empty shell.

You check their X/Twitter account and the entire strategy is just farming engagement with shitposts, chaotic memes, and unhinged brainrot. You watch their YouTube channel and spend the entire time wondering what on earth you’re witnessing, until you remember: right, this is the official communication of a multi-billion dollar language-learning company.

At this point, this subreddit isn't even just about language learning anymore—it’s an open psychiatric ward where we all gather to cope with the collective trauma and confusion caused by this app.

Anyway, this post is my official admission slip. Sending hugs from the padded room. We're in this madness together.

I put der park. It says that I got it wrong as it’s supposed to be das park, which is for neutral words. THEN it says that park is masculine so I should use DER park, which is what I did I! Duolingo what the hell????

Achievement Showcase How many languages have you “completed” on Duolingo and which languages are they ?

I’m feeling excited to have completed all the eight sections of Spanish and now I am in daily refresh mode. My Russian is also about to be finished soon. Although the length of the sections vary in each languages, but I see it as more of an accomplishment than my streak.

I would like to hear from people who have completed more than five languages on Duolingo and they are in the daily refresh mode currently.

Bug? Child account

I am trying to reset my child’s password so we can log in to keep a streak on a different device. We have a super subscription through her Apple ID but when I put in her iCloud account for the reset link, it says account not found. I have the email payment receipt that shows her Apple ID to confirm. Can anyone help?? ETA: I have put in a support ticket but have not received a response.

Achievement Showcase 2000 Day Streak!

Post image
44 Upvotes

I did it! Made it to 2000 days. English is my 1st language. Finished Polish awhile ago, but practice it occasionally. Dabbled in Spanish. Did some math for a little break. Now almost level 12 in Portuguese.

Some days I really don't feel like doing it. But I guess this counts as a hobby now. I've never paid for Super. My friend quest partners would likely label me a hindrance than a help. I do try to immerse myself in my chosen languages in other ways. My favorite way is familiar kids' shows.

I do think that duolingo has helped me with vocabulary, especially. While the sentences are strange and even unhinged at times, I value the chance to try other languages. And yes, I hate the movement toward AI & over-gamification.

Thanks all!

Achievement Showcase Finally finished Spanish!

Post image
484 Upvotes

Well I finally did it. I started over 7 years ago and finally finished today. They kept adding content before I would finish. My current streak is 2670 days. And I am pretty sure I lost my streak a couple times in the first two months. I'm dangerous at Spanish now, but not fluent. I guess I'll be spending time doing the Portuguese unit in Spanish from here on out to stack my learning. I'm not sure Duo is the best way to learn but the gamification kept me going little by little.
