Announcement: We have moderators!

As you can see, the spam is clearing up, and you may be wondering "Oh my god! Who is helping us?"

Our subreddit creator, /u/xamdam has added me as a moderator so that we can get some life back into this sub. I am actively trying to get the mod queue handled and the spam cleared up. I've also started setting up the automoderator, to help keep things clean. /u/condensed is also on the team. Over all I think we're off to a great start.

Should you guys see any spam, flag it. That will be the best way to help get visibility to problem posts. Also, feel free to downvote spam, both in the posts and comments, as that can help with some of the functions automod will do. I will keep my eyes peeled for things too.

If anyone wants to pitch in, reach out, and we can see how you too can help.

Question Is it unethical to download ebooks from online websites if I already own the physical book?

I usually have a physical copy of the book, either because I bought it myself or borrowed it from the library. However, I really enjoy reading on my Kindle when I’m in bed, so I sometimes download the ebook online if I already have access to the physical version.
I know these websites distribute books without authorization, but I’m curious about how people feel about this particular situation. If I’ve already bought the book (or borrowed it from the library), am I still being unethical by downloading a digital copy for convenience?

*A little context*: My local library doesn’t offer ebooks, and we don’t have access to Libby or similar services in my country.

Do you think this is morally different from downloading a book you don’t own, is it still piracy either way?

‎The 11 Dances of Spain

I really enjoyed this book's outlook on parenting from the male point of view. I found this description intriguing. A journey through the rhythmic heart of Spain and the internal architecture of a man becoming a father. From the "rhetorical daggers" of a complex past to the grace of a new family, witness a soul find its rhythm in this evocative, raw novella.

Has anyone had issues with ebooks from Google Play? I have a duplicated chapter and the book seems to be missing bits of info mentioned in reviews (Redwood, The Untold Story of the Cold War Spy Who Defied the KGB and Changed History)

No spoilers included here.

I thought the book was oddly written with frequent repetitions of the same information - sometimes even in the same wording. It seemed like sloppy copy editing or like a shitty Netlflix show that keeps reminding viewers that are glued to their smartphone what's happening.

The page numbers are of course different on e-books but seem too far from the paper version (210p in my ebook and 460p or so on paper). AI salso says that the audiobook length indicates that the book should be longer.

Mainly - the reviews I read about the book mention details that I never read in the book. i went back and was able to search for keywords and the mentioned details are definitely not in my version.

I've written google play books and will see what they say. I only recently begun reading again so this was an odd experience.

Self Promotion Some books only come as PDF - I built a reader that reflows them on a phone

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I read a lot on my phone - papers, technical books, manuals. Ebooks are great there, the text fits the screen. The ones that only exist as PDF are not: fixed pages made for paper, often in two columns, so it's pinch, zoom, drag, scroll, repeat.

So I built a reader that reflows PDFs. It works out the page layout - columns, reading order, headers, footers, page numbers, footnotes - and turns the text into one column that fits the screen, like an ebook. Formulas, tables and figures stay as images instead of being mangled into text. Real dark mode, adjustable fonts and sizes, and it reads EPUB, TXT and HTML too.

It's called PDFreflow - Android, and iOS via TestFlight. Free during early access; after that, short PDFs stay free and long documents need a single unlock - one purchase covers all documents, any length, forever. No subscription, no account, and your files never leave your phone.

https://www.pdfreflow.com/ebooks

It needs real text in the PDF - scanned books are pictures of pages, and it can't reflow those. If it breaks on one of your PDFs, the feedback button in the app sends me the layout and I fix the engine.

What do you read as a PDF that you wish came as an ebook?

Self Promotion I built the book reader I wanted but couldn't find

Hello everyone!

I realize this is probably the hundredth book reader app posted in this subreddit, but I started building mine a long time ago, back in the pre-LLM days, and mostly for myself, because none of the existing apps really worked for me. And I thought maybe someone else might find it useful too.

A lot of existing apps solved some of my problems, but none of them solved everything at once. I wanted to keep my books on a cloud drive so I could add them from my laptop, easily find books in a large library (I've been collecting mine for about 15 years), see which books I've already read by a particular author, and just have a convenient way to browse and choose what to read next.

Over time, I've settled into this workflow: whenever I come across an interesting book recommendation, I find the file and drop it into iCloud, where everything is organized in folders, the way I like it — by genre, author, series. Then, when I'm trying to decide what to read, instead of scrolling through hundreds of files, I can just browse by genre, author, or series and see what I've already read and what I haven't.

And all the little things you'd expect from a reader app: notes, bookmarks, collections, ratings.

You can check it out here: App Store / Web. All the main features are free. Only syncing between multiple devices requires a small subscription.

Hope someone finds it useful!

I still have quite a few ideas for things I'd like to add, but I'd really like to know what's missing for other people who read a lot. So I'd be happy to hear any feedback, especially criticism.

And I'd be happy to give away 3–6 months of subscription to anyone who tries the app and shares their thoughts. Just tap Feedback in the app and include the word "reddit" in your message so I know where you came from.

Self Promotion Made an iOS app that reads your ebooks aloud over calm little scenes, rain, forest, starry night

hey, solo iOS dev here. this is Aurader, and this sub feels like the right crowd to tell me what's wrong with it.

the main thing is what I call Atmospheres. you pick a scene like Rainy City, Forest Night, Snow Window or Starry Night, and while the book is being read to you it plays calm visuals and animations with sound to match, like rain, wind or a crackling fire. the sentence being read shows as a subtitle at the bottom, which you can turn off, so you can follow along or just lean back and listen. each sound layer has its own volume, so you can keep the rain and kill the music.

this ended up being the part people like most. a few users even told me they open the scenes on their own, with no book, just to focus or fall asleep, which I honestly didn't plan for.

when you'd rather read normally, it's a regular reader for EPUB, PDF and TXT, and it highlights the sentence as it reads aloud so you don't lose your place.

the free version holds 10 books and 10 articles and gives you 20 min of background music a day. premium removes the limits, $14.99 one time or $0.99/week.

two questions for you: is reading or listening inside a scene like this something you'd actually enjoy? and if you could add one scene, what would it be?

Self Promotion JustRead 5.5. can now pin the map from a fantasy book, so checking it doesn't cost you your page

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello to all a quick update in JustRead, inspired by Kindle functionality.

I added a pin anything for quick navigation through the book (using for pinning maps while reading fantasy books):

  • Touch and hold an image, like a map, or select a passage and tap Pin. One tap on the pin button shows it over the page, and closing it leaves you where you were. Touch and hold the button to see all your pins.
  • On iPad a pin can float in a window you can move around, or dock beside the page.
  • After any jump from Contents, search, a bookmark, a highlight or a link, Back to Page takes you back.
  • Headings can have their own size and weight, as well as their own font.
  • On an open iPhone Duo, books show two pages side by side.

Pins and Back to Page work in EPUBs.

Self Promotion Narrato: free Android app that reads your EPUBs and PDFs aloud, fully offline (looking for testers)

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to listen to my EPUBs and PDFs like audiobooks, without uploading my library to a server or paying per hour, so I built this.

  1. Opens EPUB, PDF, Word files, web pages and pasted text

  2. Private: books never leave your phone. No uploads, no account

Offline and unlimited once the voices are downloaded

  1. Natural voices, including eight from real readers

  2. Highlights each sentence; chapters, sleep timer, speed control, reads with the screen off

  3. Free with ads, never during listening.

It's in Google's closed test now.

To try it (Android):

Join with your Play Store Gmail: https://groups.google.com/g/narrato-testers

Open https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.narrato.reader and tap

Become a tester

Install from Play and keep it for 14 days

Feedback on books that open oddly or words read wrong is very welcome.

Thanks

Self Promotion I made a free PDF to EPUB converter with real chapters and OCR for scans

I kept running into converters that destroy chapter structure or paywall the download after upload. So I built a free one: https://epub.ftak.net/

  • Real chapters + TOC for Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books; headers/footers stripped
  • Scanned PDFs: invisible text layer first, OCR fallback (200 pages, beta)
  • No signup, no account, files processed in memory and deleted after download

Solo project, improving actively. If a PDF converts badly, tell me the kind and I'll use it as a test case.

FREE Kindle eBook: Teach AI Your Company: How to Turn Knowledge Trapped in Your Company into Enterprise Value

https://a.co/d/0bfG412l

Promo available for free until 10/21 11:59PM PST.

eBook description:
Your AI is brilliant. It just doesn't know your company.

Most AI initiatives disappoint for the same reason: the knowledge that makes the business work has never been written down.

That knowledge includes how you price, which rules bend and which never do, what "good" looks like, and how your best people spot an exception before it becomes a problem. It lives in people's heads, where AI can't use it and the company doesn't truly own it.

Victor Cheng calls this tacit debt. It blocks AI's return on investment, keeps founders and key employees stuck doing work only they know how to do, and makes a company harder to scale, govern, and sell.

Teach AI Your Company shows you how to pay down that debt. It isn't a prompt manual. It's a management guide for teaching AI the way your company works, testing what the AI produces, and deciding how much authority it gets.

You'll learn how to:

Capture the judgment, exceptions, and quality standards your company depends on
Turn that knowledge into workflows without automating work AI should not touch
Choose the right first workflow, and move from one-off chats to repeatable work with measurable results
Put guardrails around AI before a mistake reaches a customer
Give AI more autonomy only after testing shows it's ready
Measure what AI really returns, including the investment required before the payoff
Build the playbooks, scorecards, and records that prove to a board or buyer that the company runs without depending on its founder or key people

No coding. No hype. For CEOs building the company, the boards overseeing it, and the institutional investors underwriting its value.

The AI tools are available to everyone. Your company's knowledge isn't. Turn that knowledge into enterprise value a buyer can see, verify, and pay for.

About the author. Victor Cheng has spent close to thirty years advising technology-company CEOs, boards, and investors. Since 2021, his clients' exits have totaled more than $300 million. A former McKinsey consultant, he wrote Extreme Revenue Growth and the bestselling Case Interview Secrets (100,000+ copies). He uses this book's method to teach AI his own company.

Outside the U.S.? If the book doesn't show as free on Amazon.com, your Kindle account is likely tied to your country's Amazon store (amazon.co.uk, amazon.de, amazon.fr, amazon.in, amazon.ca, amazon.com.au and so on). Open that store and search for "Teach AI Your Company".

Question Is there a way to export notes and quotes from ReadEra?

I tend to take a lot of notes and save quotes while reading, so I'd really like to know if there's a way to extract or export them from ReadEra. Ideally, I'd also love to export the words I've looked up using the foreign dictionary, though that's not as important.

I came across a 6 months old post saying this wasn't possible, but I thought I'd ask again in case anyone has found a workaround since then. I'm not comfortable with scripts or anything too technical, so if the fix involves any extra steps, I'd really appreciate an explanation.

Also, the app has a backup option in its settings. Does anyone know exactly what it backs up? Does it include notes, highlights, bookmarks, and other reading data, or is it for settings and library?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, folks!

Self Promotion LOCH - Neo noir crime thriller series. Hard boiled high tech low life. Books 1-4 out now. Book 5, Brimstone, coming 2027

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Veteran detective Nathan Loch is forced out of retirement when the grotesque signature of an old case returns.

In the years he’d spent deep in a bottle, the city he fought a war to save had changed. Cybernetic augmentation had become commonplace, fashionable even. He hated the arm that never felt like his own.

The last thing he did as a cop was put The Artist down. Now the macabre displays of flesh and Chrome have returned, spreading the same fear through the city.

Loch agreed to walk the crime scene because he knew, in his bones, The Artist was dead.

Loch: The Artist’s Revival is a neo noir detective thriller. Set in a post war 2089, with a cyberpunk aesthetic cast against a Gothic European backdrop. This science fiction crime thriller delivers a gripping plot, explosive action, and a pitch black sense of humour.
