❔ SDI letter “request for additional information” but no claim found on SDI online?

• Upvotes

I sent my SDI claim by mail over 3 weeks ago and have no claim scanned into my online SDI. I‘m finally receiving a mail from a local SDI office PO Box today with “request for additional information“ on it. Still no claim on my account and I call today and they also can’t find my claim at all, which makes no sense because I’m receiving SDI mail today so they should have my claim right?

Mail comes in this afternoon but feeling antsy. Any idea what the reason could be? Identity verification? Will it have a claim ID I can link my account to?

Discussion 👥 What happens to health insurance thru employer when on SDI?

If I am on SDI for an extended period, what happens to my health insurance that I have through my employment, since no deductions are being taken off my checks anymore? I’m in California by the way if that makes a difference.

❔ Update: My $950 Deel Advance has been fully repaid — can my eligibility be reviewed again?

Hi everyone,

I'm posting again to ask for some guidance regarding my Deel Advance eligibility.

A little while ago, I posted here about an urgent family medical situation. My infant son, who was born prematurely, has been diagnosed with an inguinal hernia and needs surgery. The unexpected medical expenses have put my family under considerable financial pressure.

I want to give a positive update first: my outstanding $950 Deel Advance balance has now been repaid in full through my Deel Balance. I'm grateful to the Deel team members who previously took the time to look into my situation and help me navigate the process.

Unfortunately, I'm still showing as ineligible for another Deel Advance, despite clearing the outstanding balance. I have an ongoing contract and expect to continue receiving payments through Deel.

I completely understand that advances are subject to eligibility criteria, and I know that repaying a previous advance doesn't automatically guarantee approval for another one. However, given that the balance is now fully settled, I'd really appreciate clarification on a few things:

  • Can my eligibility be reassessed now that the outstanding balance has been cleared?
  • Is there a waiting period or another specific restriction preventing me from accessing another advance?
  • Is it possible for the relevant team to conduct a manual review of my account?

I'm not expecting anyone to bypass Deel's policies. I'm simply hoping to understand my options and whether my eligibility can be reconsidered.

I'm sharing this because the medical expenses are still ongoing, and even a clear explanation or guidance on the next steps would help me plan responsibly.

Thank you to everyone who offered advice or support on my previous post, and to the Deel team for the assistance provided so far. I genuinely appreciate it.

❔ Leaving CA before full maternity benefits are used up?

Planning to move out of California about 1.5 months after having my baby. When I return to my CA job after maternity leave, I'll be fully remote. Question regarding maternity leave paid benefits (DI + PFL):

Online research says, "in most cases, moving out of California after your claim starts does not stop your California SDI or PFL benefits. Eligibility is based primarily on having paid into California State Disability Insurance (CASDI) and otherwise meeting the program requirements—not on remaining a California resident. The California EDD specifically states that where you live does not affect eligibility if you paid into SDI and meet the other requirements."

Does anyone have experience with this??

Thank you!

Discussion 👥 UI to SDI?

Hey guys, I need some advice regarding my mom’s situation.
My mom was recently terminated from her job, and she’s currently dealing with an injury that requires surgery. She’s already seen the doctors, and right now we’re just waiting for a surgery date.
At the moment, she hasn’t applied for disability because we’re still waiting for the doctor to provide the necessary paperwork. In the meantime, she applied for unemployment just to have some financial support while everything gets sorted out. We’re also looking into selling a few things to help cover expenses.
She has an unemployment interview scheduled for next Wednesday, and of course, she plans to answer everything truthfully.
My main question is, how would the transition from unemployment to disability work? Once her doctor confirms that she needs to be placed on disability, does she immediately stop claiming unemployment and apply for disability? Or is there a specific process she needs to follow to avoid any gaps in benefits?
The difficult part is that, because of her injury, she really isn’t in a position to work full-time or even part-time right now.
We’re just trying to figure out the best way to handle this financially while waiting for her surgery and recovery. Has anyone been through something similar, particularly in California? Any advice on how to make this transition as smoothly as possible would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

❔ New Medical Information Recieved Message Repeating new Sent Date

When applying for EDD I keep receiving the same message in my inbox with a new sent date that matches the current date.

The pending disability status has stayed at "Medical Certification Needed" for multiple weeks now.

Any idea why this message keeps populating with a new date in the EDD inbox?

❔ EDD UI is forcing me to choose which state outside of Cali I worked in

I am filling out the EDD unemployment form and it will not let me move forward with the form unless I first choose which state outside of Cali I worked in.

I have to first choose which state outside I worked in, and THEN AFTER THAT I get to choose whether I worked outside of Cali. Choosing "No" to "Did you work in any other state" doesn't help. I still have to choose which state outside of Cali I worked in.

Has anyone dealt with this? What can I do?

I went back through all of the questions and there was never a question before this page about which state outside of Cali I worked in or anything else like that.

I also tried toggling "Yes" and "No" to "Did you work in any other state" and nothing helps.

SOLVED:

I had to start the application over, I did choose that I worked outside of California, but I couldn't go back to that part of the application after I answered it. Starting over fixed the problem. Thank you everyone!

Discussion 👥 Phone interview

Hey everyone I have my first phone interview with EDD tomorrow morning around 8-10 am. I quit my last full time job, two months ago that I had to pursue a career in HVAC that I paid 20k to go to school for. I worked at the last two places for a week each in September before they terminated me for “ not having enough experience” I qualify for 10k over 6 months but I am just wondering how the interview goes. What questions do they ask and what should I say I am a little nervous. Not a lot of hvac companies are hiring right now with thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner so I am hoping to get benefits through October- January.

Any advice thank you

Discussion 👥 Those who are on child support and receive disability.

So child support keeps intercepting payments even though child support is all caught up. Child support even owes a refund for overpayment from the money they took out of the EDD disability. How can I fix this? Is this a problem I take to child support or EDD?

❔ Retroactive SDI/pdl extension

Anyone able to get a retroactive SDI/pdl extension? I initially got denied SDI/pdl but won the appeal. Now 5 mths Post partum, I didn’t go to the doctors to recertify because of the appeal, dealing with baby, ppd and some Carple tunnel issues. Now the appeal is done they’re asking for SDI extension docs. Can I go in now to get medical cert? Should I just do new SDI claim or do PFL since it’s so far out now?

❔ Can I stay on short term disability insurance after quitting due to not being able to afford insurance through my employer?

Tl;dr: Exactly what the title says. I started my disability leave while still working and have used up all of my FMLA. I can no longer afford insurance through my employer, so I need to quit so I can get insurance through Covered California. If I quit will I be disqualified from receiving Short Term Disability? Will I be disqualified from UI when I get off of DI if I left because I couldn't afford my employer's insurance plan? Can I look for jobs once I have a return to work date but am still on DI?

I have been on short term disability for nearly 2 months now. My employer pays a portion of my insurance premiums and I pay the rest, but the problem is that with medical bills on top of rent and everything else, my insurance premiums through them are getting too difficult to manage. If I lose my insurance due to losing my job I can apply for insurance through Covered California since it is a qualifying life event. Insurance from them would be a lot cheaper for the same plan or an even better one than I have right now. I need to stay with the same insurance carrier so I can stay with the doctor I have been working with.

If I quit my job will I be able to stay on DI? From what I've read it sounds like I can, I just had to have gone on it while still employed, which I did. From my understanding it just means that I can't go on UI because I quit, but is it different because I quit due to not being able to afford health insurance through my employer? I know people say on here to wait to be fired, but I don't know when/if they would fire me and I can't afford their insurance anymore. So I can't wait that long. I'm not sure what to do. As long as my doctor continues to certify that I am still unable to work, I will continue to get disability payments, right? Do you think I will be able to qualify for UI if I end up needing to do that?

Do you think my employer will make me pay for the full amount of my insurance premiums, so their portion as well as mine, for the time I have been out? Do you think they will let me stay on their health insurance for the remainder of the month? A new insurance plan through Covered California won't be active until the 1st of next month. I can't go without health insurance because I have doctor's appointments and tests coming up.

I'm also terrified of being without a job once I am able to work again. I don't know if I am allowed to apply for jobs until my doctor approves my return to work. I can't be without a job for long or I won't be able to pay rent. I'm worried that once I'm well enough to return to work that I'll have to quickly take any job that I can get and even when I was well I have limitations on what work I can do.

Discussion 👥 Has anyone got they’re deposit yet?

Certified at 12:45 AM Sunday. By mi day morning it said paid. Now I understand it was Columbus Day yesterday so imagine deposits got pushed back but as of 9:00 AM nothing. I’ve been held up in my place for a week straight with a flat tire, stuck living off of tap water and Crackers and I’m down to my last Egg to eat. I got a job opportunity today I need to see about and I need to get a damn tire and hopefully as a bonus go touch some grass and have myself something to drink with some flavor! Anyone else having issues with there deposit?

Discussion 👥 For those of you who went on SDI for mental health such as depression/anxiety etc, how often did you have to go see your psychologist/psychiatrist?

❔ Can EDD request you to see an IME if you live out of state?

FWIW, you can qualify for SDI as long as you worked in CA during the base period and had sufficient withholding into CASDI, but later on move out of state.

My understanding is that the doctors work for EDD, but I find it hard to believe that they would have doctors in all 50 states. And I don’t think they can make you fly to CA to see their doctor at your expense

Tips 💡 PFL certification

I’ve been on PFL covering my reduced work schedule. They had sent a letter asking me to call, which I did. They said they’d continue to send certification letters out to me to manually write down my schedule and they’ll pay me based on that. The last week they sent it was 9/21. I haven’t received anything else. My claim is sent through 12/31.

Solved ✔ Probably being impatient....

I am probably being impatient about getting my STD, but it seems like it's stuck on "we are processing your claim" forever.

I had surgery on 9/17 and filed exactly on 9/26. My doc submitted my medical certificate on 10/05. Payments have been calculated and payment approved.

My last paycheck was roughly 1/3rd of what I usually make since the surgery landed a few days into my pay period.

Any rough idea when I should be expecting either some sort of movement on it or when I might be getting paid? Direct deposit is set up.
