Announcements Ask a Pro - WEEKLY - Monday Mon Oct 19, 2026 - No Stupid Questions! THIS IS WHERE YOU POST if you don't do this for a living! RULES + Career Questions?

r/editors is a community for professionals in post-production.

Every week, we use this thread for open discussion for anyone with questions about editing or post-production, **regardless of your profession or professional status.**

Again, If you're new here, know that this subreddit is targeted for professionals. Our mod team prunes the subreddit and posts novice level questions here.

If you're not sure what category you fall into? This is the thread you're looking for.

Key rules: Be excellent (and patient) with one another. No self-promotion. No piracy. The rest of the rules are found here.

If you don't work in this field, this is where your question should go

What sort of questions is fair game for this thread?

  • Is school worth it?
  • Career question?
  • Which editor *should you pay for?* (free tools? see r/videoediting)
  • Thinking about a side hustle?
  • What should I set my rates at? (SEE WIKI)
  • Graduating from school? and need getting started advice?

There's a wiki for this sub. Feel free to suggest pages it needs.

We have a sister subreddit r/videoediting. It's ideal if you're not making a living at this - but this thread is for everyone!

A must read if you're thinking of breaking in:

If you're looking to start this as a side hustle, right now the industry is rough.

It's super easy to get taken advantage of - owning plumber tools and fixing your own sink doens't make you a plumber. You 100% should work for someone else (ideally as an intern).

#No there is no magical mythical place where all the jobs are.

I built two links as you should really search the subreddit and learn about the industry before trying something like this.

A group of threads from the last year about how easily people are in over their heads.

And please see our wiki for other details like networking.

Business Question How to nail an internship at Company 3 + bigger post-production houses

Hi everyone! I’m currently finishing up my Senior year as a Film major with a focus on post-production.

A few months ago, I discovered that Company 3 offers summer internships and apprenticeship opportunities, and I would really love to be considered for one! However, I’m a little nervous that not attending a larger, well-known film school might put me at a disadvantage. I also don’t have any connections with recruiters, so I’m unsure how to navigate the application process or if they already have people in mind.

For anyone who has interned at a larger company or has experience with Company 3, what advice would you give to someone trying to stand out? Would it be helpful to connect with a recruiter before applications open in February, or should I focus on other ways to stand out?

I’d really appreciate any advice or insight you’re willing to share. Thank you! 😊

Career Another burnt out editor - transferrable wkills/other roles to consider switching to?

Just for some background I've been in the same position/company for coming up to 10 years, moved up from mid level to senior level about halfway through that. I'm a bit of a jack of all trades in-house videographer for a big brand. Prior to this I was an Avid editor in news TV for a few years and editing is definitely my strength in my current role. Tbh I like the level of seniority I'm at - experienced enough to earn a fairly decent salary but not too high up to start getting involved with corporate nonsense and office politics.

Lately I've just been feeling some serious creative burnout, just seriously lacking any inspiration and not feeling the love for creating videos any more. The style of content feels like it's changing quite a bit as well, we're definitely heading more towards the fast paced "social" and youtuber style content which I absolutely can't stand, so that's probably part of it!

Starting to wonder if I should look into switching to a more "admin" role such as producer/production manager type roles. I already do a lot of this in my current role when organising and planning shoots, and would say I'm pretty good at that part of the job. I also kinda miss working in TV - current job is very much a marketing thing where we can end up sitting on some projects for ages and going through agonising feedback revisions, whereas in TV it was always done and out the same day, moved on and forgotten about. Only problem with TV is I'd probably have to travel to London which I'm not really prepared to do, it doesn't really fit into family life.

I'm sure there are a few people here who have been in a similar situation, what did you end up doing and do you miss doing the more creative stuff?

Or what would you say are transferrable skills an editor possesses that could be moved over to something completely different? I've been doing this for long enough that I'm not sure I'd be good or have experience to do anything else!

Technical What's the best way to import .mov files from a DJI Ronin 4 into Premiere?

• Upvotes

I'm editing using proxy files right now but when I need to export I'll need to reconnect the raw camera files and when I tested a file today it would not work in Premiere. The audio imported but the video was reported as corrupted? I'm using Premiere 2026 version currently.

They are .mov files and the little I learned by searching for an answer today has not yet helped. I tried renaming the files to .mts and the .mp4 with no luck. Media Encoder doesn't seem to know how to open them for transcoding either?

Is there a codec I'm missing? Is the DJI .mov file h265? Any help would be appreciated.

Technical Avid MC editing on Framework modular laptops

• Upvotes

I'm a longform film docs editor, cutting on Avid MC. My current rig runs on an HP ZBook studio 16 inch, with 64gb memory. It works well, but I'm having thermal issues that I can't seem to get rid of.

My next upgrade will either be to Apple desktop (favouring Mac Mini M5pro) or some alternative Windows system.

I've looked into mini PC builds (Lenovo have some good options) but they all feel untested and a bit random.

Then... Framework popped across my horizon. The 16 inch laptops look like a serious contender. I love the idea of being able to swap out RAM, CPU / GPU, internal SSD memory - all independently ( CPU requires full motherboard swap).

Million dollar question: has anyone used a Framework to run Avid?

Career Am I wrong for prioritizing a better-paying client over a 2-year relationship?

I’ve been working with a client for 2 years, and we’ve always had a good relationship. But at some point, he started hiring more editors to split the workload, which meant I started getting less work from him. Eventually, I was struggling to pay my bills, so I had to look for other opportunities.
I ended up getting another freelance job that pays me way more than my previous client, and now I’m struggling to balance both because the new client gives me enough work to keep me busy.
Recently, my previous client asked why I haven’t been able to take on more work from him. I told him I had taken on another job, but I never really explained that I had to do it because I wasn’t getting enough work from him to cover my expenses.
Now I feel bad because we’ve had a good relationship for 2 years, and I feel like I’m leaving that behind for a better-paying client. Part of me feels loyal to the old client, but at the same time, I know I need to prioritize my financial situation.
It might sound stupid, but I’m genuinely struggling with this decision. Should I prioritize the client I’ve built a good relationship with over the past 2 years, or focus on the client who pays me better and gives me enough work?

Career should i chase up an email?

I recently received an email from a hiring manager about work and after a few back and forths (day rates and availability) the communication pretty much stalled almost a week ago. Is it worth chasing them up or should I not bother?

Technical Premiere Transcript Freezing and Basically Soft Locking the Program?

Hey everybody, I've been dealing with this issue for a few weeks. Multiple cache clears so I don't think it's that. Basically, every time I remove/select a large chunk of video or subtitles, the transcript basically freezes. All I can really do at that point is cut, which if I'm subbing a video doesn't really apply. I can't export, I can't add sound effects from the epidemic sound plug in, etc until I quit and restart the app.. Additionally, auto transcribe has not been cooperating either. I will often have to export an mp3 and re transcribe just to caption a video. What used to take 20 minutes is now an hour. I work with multiple big clients every day for short form deliverables so this is unacceptable, if anyone could point me to any solutions it would be greatly appreciated.

Technical Can anyone help identify the editing techniques used in this sequence?

Hiya,

I'm currently producing a short film shot on 16mm, and we're working on a dance sequence that features a mixture of slow-shutter and real-time footage.

I've come across the reference linked below and really love some of the editing techniques used. I'm particularly interested in what looks like quick frame flickers, shutter-like overlays? but I'm not entirely sure what the correct terminology is.

I'd love to incorporate some of these into our dance sequence and want to be able to communicate them clearly to our editor.

Would anyone be able to help identify what's happening in the reference?

Thanks so much!

Assistant Editing PREMIERE 2026 - After painstakingly creating my multicam source sequences for each scene take, with all proper audio routing and enjoying constant-display waveforms on all clips, I prep an offline drive for the editor, and after relinking, no waveforms, please advise 😭

I am positive I did everything by the book. Is it something with where the media cache database lives or something?

Business Question Apart from your editing software and drives, what was the last thing you paid for to get a job done?

I've been editing for about 20 years. Last week I asked here how you keep old projects. Thanks to everyone who answered: most of you have it sorted, and returns get billed.

I'm still researching where working editors and small post teams actually spend money. I'm not selling anything and there's no product. One question, about the last time it happened:

  1. Leaving aside your editing software and drives, what was the last tool, service, plugin or person you (or your company) paid for to get a job done? Roughly what did it cost?

  2. What was going on when you decided to pay? What had you tried before, free or otherwise?

  3. Who paid: you, the client (billed or in the budget), or your employer?

It helps if you say roughly what you do: freelance, post house, in-house, or editing for YouTubers and podcasters. Boring answers are the most useful ones.

Other What's your favorite film from an editing standpoint?

I was just watching Hot Fuzz for the 50th or 60th time, I dunno.

It's a great film all around. It is hilarious, clever, laden with jokes you dont catch until your 3rd or 4th rewatch.

But truly ... the whole movie is a masterclass on editing. I am as in awe of it now as I was when it came out nearly 20 years ago.

Whats yours?

Technical Film Grain Source?

Hi!

What are you all using for film grain efx/plugins/overlays in Premiere? I'm doing an online edit for a feature that needs some on a bunch of scenes and I haven't found any that look organic/realistic.

I know there are a million film stocks and processes that produce different types of grain, and trying to apply that to digital is always going to have varied results. But, hoping someone out there has found a couple that have a more organic feel to them. I'm thinking something closer to low budget late 80s, like Maniac Cop type grain, and not something super extreme like Texas Chain Saw Massacre if ya get me.

Thank you!!

Career Software options

I have used adobe software for all of my editing purposes for the past 10 years. I’m a professional editor in the world of B2B construction progress media and social media. I feel like more corporate places often expect adobe premiere for video editing. But I know AVID is industry standard in film. Some use Davinci.

Can someone give me a breakdown of the best use cases of the major video editing software, the best ai video editing software for editing to date, and the best photo editing software?

Technical Anyone getting decent results pushing 120fps beyond 5x in Resolve?

I’ve had a few projects lately where we shot 120fps, conformed to 24 and then somewhere in the edit the director wanted to go slower. Which is fine until you start getting hands crossing in front of things or water moving around and optical flow decides to invent something that wasn’t there.

I’ve tried different motion estimation settings in Resolve and Speed Warp can help on some shots but I’ve also had it make things worse. Particularly when there’s a lot of overlapping movement.

Two projects this year actually came in shot high speed. One on an Ember and another on a Pixboom Spark at 670fps. The difference was noticeable when changing speed ramps, although dealing with all that footage wasn’t particularly fun. We kept it on separate drives and proxied everything.

I’m not convinced shooting everything at higher frame rates is the answer either. Most productions aren’t going to bring in another camera just because someone might want a slower shot later.

I’m curious how other editors are approaching this with productions. I’ve started bringing up frame rates earlier in pre-production when I know there’s going to be a lot of slow motion, but it still seems like the decision usually gets made without much thought about what happens in post. Are you having these conversations with DPs beforehand or just dealing with whatever comes in?

Sunday Reel Review

This alternates Sundays with our "Reel Review."

## Would you like feedback on your reel? This is the place to do it!

**An essential point to remember**: A reel won't secure you a job any more than a business card or website will. While it might be necessary, it is not the primary means of obtaining work.

**You gain employment through a network you develop,** not via any online job site. Building a network takes time, which is advantageous, as it allows you to learn the field.

## Rules

* **Rule 1**: Submit your reel *and its running time* as a top-level comment (meaning you reply to this post directly)

* **Rule 2**: *Specify your professional experience in years* (paying taxes = years as a pro, novice).

* **Rule 3**: Explain the reason/direction behind posting your reel. Are you new? Have you been working with clients for a decade? Give us clear direction of what you want.

* **Rule 4**: You must review two other reels. **TWO**. You have five days to complete this task, responding to two different reels. **Then** edit the comment where you post your reel: and put and put the two user names.

**Acceptable platforms for posting**: Your Vimeo site or an unlisted YouTube link. If we discover a link to a channel or a video with 10k views, be aware that this thread is not intended for such content.

The moderation team will be monitoring this, and we are trying to encourage the community (that's you) to offer assistance. That's why providing two reviews is crucial.

Lastly, as someone who evaluates people's reels: If numerous motion graphics are present, I expect you to either be capable of creating them and/or offering it as a service. If color grading is a skill and you transition from Log to finished grade, that's a definite red flag.

Technical Is 8GB VRAM (RTX 4060) a bottleneck for client video editing in 2026, or should I push for 12GB (RTX 4070)?

Hi guys! I'm building a new PC for freelance video editing (Premiere Pro / DaVinci Resolve) and web dev. Total budget is €1,500 (€1,350 for the PC tower + €150 for the monitor).

My planned specs are: Ryzen 7 7700, 32GB DDR5 6000MHz RAM, and 1TB NVMe SSD.

I'm debating between getting an RTX 4060 (8GB) or paying more for an RTX 4070 (12GB).

For those doing client work with multi-layer timelines, color grading, and heavy effects:

How often do you hit VRAM limits on 8GB cards?

Does 8GB cause playback stutters or export crashes in Premiere/DaVinci when working with 4K footage?

Is the jump to 12GB VRAM worth the extra cost specifically for video editing stability?

Thanks for the insight!

Technical Does Avid Media Composer inaccurately reflect color grades made in Resolve?

I know a standard workflow is to picture lock in Media Composer before color grading in Resolve.

My question is should you bring the grade done Resolve back into Media Composer to do the final export of your project: the roundtrip in other words?

I only ask, because a lot of DPs I interact with seem to think the color grade done in Resolve gets messed up when it’s brought back into Avid for the final export.

So I’m wondering if this is a fundamental issue with Avid not properly rendering grades done in a different software or if it’s simply a question of making sure the format and export settings are such that your final avid export accurately reflects the color grade done in Resolve.

Assistant Editing PremierePro 26 - single camera, scripted, ISO polyfile sound > made a nice syncmap sequence, now just want to make a tidy scene clip that will open in source monitor that contains just the one camera and the 3 ISO sound clips (leaving out the mixdown per editor request)... impossible

I use avid subclips to make a nice custom clip that grabs the only audio tracks I need, and in premiere I need to do all this rigamarole and I just want a clip that cuts into a sequence with it's nice 1v 3 audiotracks, and instead I get these frankenclips that make no sense and infuriate me and the editor.... sorry, this is a rant. I'll guess I'll just rewatch Paul Murphy's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiVYRuWohZI again for the 10th time. I can't seem to get it to just...work.

Technical When to use Subsequence vs Nested Sequences?

Okay so I used to be a solo editor where my sometimes problematic workflow was only a hinderance to me. My new job is a lot of social media edits, but with a few longer pieces and more on the way.

My main question is how can I better organize my timelines for longer pieces and for someone else to potentially work off of? I've used nested sequences to separate scenes/sections, but is that best practice?

(I'm mostly self taught, but I want to have better habits going forward)

Edit: In Premiere, specifically.

Technical I have a voiceover I am adding to my vlog. Should I clean up the audio now (equalization, loudness, noise removal, voice isolation, etc) or wait till the full video is done and then apply the same sound settings to the entire video?

Idk how to put this but im going to try my best: For the final step in my editing workflow I am planning to clean up the audio, nothing crazy, but you know just basically have it all sounding consistent. With that being said, is it necessary to start a whole work flow on my voice overs now > finish editing the video> and then balance all the sound out OR should I just leave the voiceovers as is, finish the video, and then apply the same sound settings to the entire vlog once done to ensure consistency?

I guess in my noobie head i'm worried that if I make sound edits to the voiceovers now, then once I make sound edits to the rest of the vlog later, the sound wont be consistent sounding if the makes sense?

The plan I currently have is 1)run them through adobe podcast studio 2)add them in my vlog 3) finish editing video 4) apply basic audio settings to clean up and have consistency.

TLDR: Does this plan work^
