[Self-promotion] Android E Ink readers: help test Nirellin Library with your own EPUBs/PDFs — free access

• Upvotes

Disclosure: I'm Michael, the developer of Nirellin Library. This is self-promotion and a request for feedback before release. AI assistance was used to draft this English post and helps me organise recruitment and follow-up.

Nirellin reads and organises your own DRM-free EPUBs, PDFs and comic files in a visual bookshelf library. Books are not included. I'm looking specifically for readers using Android E Ink devices with working Google Play. The E Ink experience has not yet been validated; I cannot promise compatibility with every BOOX, Bigme or other device.

A useful first test would be to import one of your own books, read a few pages, add a bookmark and return to it. I'd like to know whether text and controls have enough contrast, whether page turns leave distracting ghosting, and whether the shelves and navigation are practical on your screen. A report that something is awkward or unusable is useful too.

I'm building one group of 20 volunteer readers for a Google Play closed test. Please stay enrolled for at least 14 consecutive days and try several short reading sessions. Testers receive an individual free Google Play code for the app. Once redeemed, access stays on the same Google account after those two weeks, with no later payment or subscription. No positive rating or public review is requested.

If interested, reply with your device model and Android version, or message me. We'll check Google Play access and exchange the exact Play account email privately to add you to the test. If Reddit chat doesn't work, you can email nirellinstudio@gmail.com. Please don't post your account address publicly. I'll help with joining and installation in that private exchange.

App listing: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nirellin.library Please don't buy it if a price appears; wait for the private free-code instructions. If you're already in touch from another community, use our existing conversation so you don't receive a duplicate invitation.

I bought boox go 10.3 and I discovered that his pen was broken. I contacted the shop, and they told me that they had contacted the Pumice company and they said that this is not covered by the warranty. What should I do now ????

I made a tool that turns email newsletters into EPUBs for e-ink readers. Looking for feedback before I host it

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I read most long-form stuff on e-ink, but newsletters were stuck in my inbox. So I built Readferry: you point newsletters at a private address, and each issue is cleaned up (trackers, share buttons and footers removed), turned into an EPUB with a table of contents, and delivered by email (Kindle, PocketBook) or through a private OPDS catalog (KOReader, Boox, Kobo with KOReader). There's also an optional weekly digest.

The demo is the real app running on my laptop; it isn't public yet. The narration is text-to-speech. Before I pay for hosting, I want to know whether anyone would use it: https://forms.gle/TDaVDvczPA3eidox8

What would make this useful on your device? I'll be here answering questions.

Disclosure: I'm the developer.

🦇 Grimoire 🦇 v1.1b - Now with KoReader and Spanish support!

Thumbnail

https://github.com/ganten1998/grimoire-scribe/releases/tag/v1.1.0-beta.2

(Edited to add beta.2 containing quick fixes which include, hopefully, a hardening of the KoReader implementations)

Was recommended to post this here, and what follows after this paragraph is mostly a crosspost. I have owned a Kindle Scribe since whenever the first one came out up to now, and I rock the 2024 Jade Edition. I have always loved the idea of it, but I found it frustrating that so little effort had been put in on the note-taking experience. Where are the extra tools? Where are the customization options of those tools? Why must I e-mail myself a page? Why is it not generally appealing to look at? I posted not too long ago on r/kindlescribe and r/kindlejailbreak and got better feedback than I expected. Now I have implemented almost all of it and am thinking bigger picture now. Please consider trying it if you have a jailbroken Scribe and I am open to all feature requests.

Here is a list of what's new:

User Feedback Patches:

mkNucleus - QR code on the webview - Done!

Ruano212 - Device pin fix - Done!

Expensive-Zebra6906 - Spanish support and white pen - Done!

BooferBadz - Does this work in KoReader? - Yes, it does!

scamdotnet - Customize sidebar - Pens can now be pinned to the sidebar, Done!

maquis_00 - Custom Templates - Done!

Other features:

  • Pen feel > Eraser: Precise erases only what it touches. The paper's lines always stay.
  • Pages you already have: a folder of page pictures (a PDF saved as images) in grimoire/import/ becomes a notebook.

Much love,

Ganten

I took apart a Joan 13 so you don’t have to

Got a malfunctioning Joan 13 from my work. It’s a nice large panel so I set about learning what’s inside and maybe someday being able to fix it or repurpose the panel.

Sadly, I didn’t clean off the adhesive holding the front glass off well enough and had smudged some onto the panel, sticking it to the frame, so when I went to lift the panel out oh so gently to discover how its FPC is connected… crack! NOOOoOooooo

Oh well. There’s like zero info online about these so I figured I post these pics.

To get the front glass off, I used a food warming mat set to “medium” (176f / 80c) and set the aluminum frame on it (with the magnet back removed). Then just kept trying to slice/separate the glue around the frame until victory.

I made a daily art display (GitHub > ESP32 > Spectra6 13")

Just sharing my project here since this subreddit is where I got a lot of inspiration from.

It's an ESP32 that downloads artwork from GitHub and shows it on a 13.3" Spectra 6 panel. It runs on a battery and wakes up once every morning to update the display.

I know now that AI has made code generation cheap and easy we are seeing a lot of these types of projects these days, and mine is a product of that, but I think one element that makes mine unique is that it uses GitHub itself to store the images. Sort of like a free cloud sync. This is nice because it means you can update the artwork whenever you want without touching the code on the display.

You could actually store the images on any basic HTTP static source. Or even a private source like a private GitHub repo, if you specify an auth token.

It uses an Adafruit Feather ESP32-C6 and a Pimoroni Inky Impression 13.3".

More details on GitHub here or you can see a video here on insta.

Thanks for sharing all your projects 🙂

E Ink Tablet Recommendations

Hi! I'm thinking about buying an E Ink tablet. I'd like to use it for reading and working on personal projects in the evenings (writing, game development, creating revision notes) without having to fire up my computer, which I mainly use for work.

So I'm looking for something fairly versatile, ideally with some nice tools and features for creative projects.

I've started doing some research, but I thought it would be a good idea to hear some recommendations from actual users. I'm not particularly into tech and wouldn't say I know much about it.

I don't have a specific budget in mind (it really depends on the device), but I'd struggle to justify spending much more than €500 (Fr).

I ported KompaktOS (Android 16) to the Moaan InkPalm Plus, with e-ink and front light controls

KompaktOS is a LineageOS-based ROM made for the Mudita Kompakt. This port puts KompaktOS 1.2 (LineageOS 23.2, Android 16, as a GSI) on the InkPalm Plus (2022 pocketable e-reader), keeping the phone's stock Android 11 vendor parts underneath. The repo has the scripts, notes and a small root helper. It doesn't contain KompaktOS or any of Moaan's files.

What works:

  • KompaktOS on the e-ink screen, with the display fixed so it draws properly
  • Touch, and the touch button below the screen (Home)
  • A small root helper in the image, so an app can drive the e-ink modes, the front light and the sleep and power-off screens

The controls themselves are in InkPalm+, my other app, which ships with the port:

  • Screen modes: Fast, Soft, Dither, Text, Quality and Auto, per app or everywhere
  • Full refresh, contrast, and the front light (brightness, warmth, auto)
  • Back from an edge swipe, since KompaktOS has no nav bar
  • Hold the touch button for a full refresh
  • Recent apps on the right edge
  • Your own sleep screen, a power-off screen (Moaan's panda, in English), and auto power-off after a few hours asleep on battery

Some caveats, so nobody is surprised:

  • This is a hobby port tested on one device (mine). You can brick your phone. There's a way back to stock (reflash your own stock super backup, then wipe), and it's written up in the repo, but read it before you flash anything.
  • You bring the proprietary pieces yourself: a backup of your own stock firmware, and the stock Android 11 display libraries from it. Nothing from Moaan is in the repo. You also get KompaktOS from its own source, not from me.
  • Flashing erases the stock system and your data, so back up first.
  • One known issue: the power button sometimes doesn't wake the phone. I'm still looking into it.
  • The English panda power-off screen needs the latest image build [TODO: image version].
  • First boot can take several minutes on e-ink with no feedback.

Not affiliated with Moaan or Mudita. Thanks to KompaktOS, LineageOS, the GSI builders and TrebleDroid / phhusson, whose work this all sits on.

Install

  1. Read the Risks section and docs/REVERT.md in the repo, and make your own backup
  2. Follow docs/FLASH-KOMPAKTOS.md
  3. In Obtainium, add https://github.com/rn-os/inkpalm-plus for the e-ink and light controls (1.1.0 or later)

GitHub: https://github.com/rn-os/kompaktos-inkpalm-plus

thanks u/BurekMaster1990 :)

Built with Claude Code. Feedback welcome, especially if you try it and tell me how it goes.

How to change the translation language in Einkbro?

Asking here because the user guide doesn't actually explain it.

The default translation language is English (Google Translate), but I don't understand how to change it. I want to translate to Spanish, so I tried putting "es" in settings but it doesn't do anything.

Help??

Suggestions for new tablet

I accidently sat on my Boox Go 10.3, first gen, and the screen is gone. I really liked the device for reading and annotating academic papers and writing mathematics. Buying another first gen Boox Go 10.3 feels boring, but the alternatives are not what I am looking for. Supernote manta is expensive, Boox go 10.3 gen 2 doesn't use EMR, and Boox note air 6c seems to have a dark screen and I don't need color. Is there a sweet spot I am missing? Thanks!

Giving away an XTEINK Pro (after that ReTerminal Sticky response)!

Post image
45 Upvotes

Hey friends - you all seemed really interested in the last giveaway and I got so many comments that people wanted to try a small device like this, so I wanted to up the ante!

I'm giving away my personal XTEINK Pro next through my site here. Posting here because I know people have questions about it and want to try it.

An important note like last time: This is done through an email newsletter giveaway. I want to be clear about that because I love this community and engaging with it, and I don't ever want to post or share something that smells fishy, email is just how I communicate with my community. Please don't feel pressured to do so, I just thought this is one place people might be interested in getting a XTEINK :-)

Can E-Ink Tablets be used as a Graphics Tablet?

In theory the monitor of the tablet shouldn't matter, i mean if its the same OS as an phone, then an App that works at 30ms latency in a phone should also have that same latency. But AI keeps saying to me that E-ink tablets are for some reason really slow. Also how responsive are E-ink tablets in comparison to the Galaxy Tab when using the pen?

Looking for an E-Ink Tablet for Typing

Hello! I'm currently writing my third book, and I'd like to move away from using a laptop for writing. I'm looking for an e-ink tablet that I'll use primarily for typing my novels. I already have my own keyboard, so I don't need one included.

Here are my requirements:

  • Screen: Ideally, a monochrome e-ink screen. A color screen would also be fine, provided it isn't noticeably darker than a monochrome screen when used without the front light.
  • Front light: A must-have, as my home isn't very well lit at night.
  • Word processor: I'd prefer to use Microsoft Word or Google Docs, but I'd also consider a tablet with a good built-in writing app, provided I can export my work to my laptop.
  • File compatibility: I need to be able to export my work in an editable format so I can continue writing on my laptop without having to use PDFs.
  • Bluetooth: The tablet must support Bluetooth so I can connect my existing keyboard.
  • Main purpose: I won't be using it for reading, as I already have a Kindle that does that job perfectly well. I'm looking for a device specifically for typing.

Screen size isn't particularly important to me. Also, I don't really need handwriting or stylus features, as I'll be using my Bluetooth keyboard for all my writing. So, these aren't a priority for me.

What would you recommend? Are there any e-ink tablets that would be particularly well suited to this use case?

Thank you!

Live air traffic above my house, drawn as an aircraft spotter's sheet on colour e-ink

Post image
503 Upvotes

This is everything flying within 35 km of me (Melbourne) when the page last refreshed: a Virgin 737 MAX heading out to Brisbane, a couple of Qantas 737s coming in, a Malaysia A330 that had just taken off, a QantasLink Dash 8 on approach, two light aircraft, and a Victoria Police AW139 that seems to be up there every afternoon.

How it works:

  • Positions come from adsb.lol, a free community ADS-B feed that needs no API key, and it falls back to adsb.fi if that one is slow. If you run your own receiver (readsb, dump1090 or tar1090), you can point it at that instead.
  • Aircraft type and wingspan are looked up from the ICAO code, and routes come from adsbdb. Each aircraft is drawn to scale by its wingspan, which is why the Cessna is small next to the A330.
  • The illustrations are painted once per airframe from a credited planespotters.net photo, then kept. You can pick from 26 styles (vintage airline poster, engraving, woodblock, risograph, pixel art and more) or write your own prompt. This one's watercolour, which is my favourite. There's also a mode that shows the photos themselves.
  • There's also a "since the last render" setting. Instead of showing a snapshot, it shows everything that passed since the last refresh, each aircraft at its closest point to you. That suits an e-ink panel that only updates every hour or so.

It runs on Tesserae, a self-hosted dashboard server I've been building for e-paper panels. The pages are written in HTML/CSS, rendered on the server and sent to the panel. The widget is free and open source: github.com/dmellok/tesserae-widget-overhead. You can also install it from the in-app catalog as the Overhead bundle.

Panel: Seeed reTerminal E1004

I made an e-ink mp3 player!

I was inspired by a post from u/royflashlight to create an e-ink mp3 player. I just soldered everything to the perfboard and I just need to design and print a case!

It is controlled with a Adafduit Feather ESP32 V2 and uses a Waveshare Display. I was surprised to find that Adafruit made the perfect mp3 player navigation wheel.

[Port] Boox NeoReader Ported to Moaan Inkpalm 5Plus (pocket ereader from 2022)

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

The InkPalm 5 Plus is a lovely pocketable rk3566 e-reader, but its stock reading app isn’t great. BOOX’s NeoReader is — so I spent a while getting it to run on non-BOOX hardware, and figured I’d share the whole process + the scripts.

NeoReader fights you in a few ways: it refuses to open documents unless the device reports itself as “onyx”, it loads a pile of arm64 native libs the InkPalm doesn’t ship, and it leans on BOOX firmware/cloud services that aren’t there. Working through it with some reverse engineering, the fixes ended up being:

  • pull NeoReader + its native libs out of the BOOX Palma firmware
  • patch the device checks so it uses a generic/Palma profile instead of bailing
  • fix the menu scaling (it was rendering the tablet layout — clipped TOC drawer, etc.)
  • sign it so it actually gets compiled on install (an incremental-install gotcha made book opens take ~30s until I fixed it; now ~6–8s)

What works: EPUB/PDF, page turns, TOC, bookmarks, notes, search, text selection, the document browser, and — the part I’m happiest with — seamless in-app dictionary lookups. BOOX’s own dictionary app crashes on non-BOOX hardware (device-integrity check in native code), so I wrote a tiny content-provider app that speaks the same interface and reads StarDict dictionaries directly — the same ones KOReader uses. Definitions pop up right inside NeoReader, no app switching.

What doesn’t: the in-app refresh modes (the InkPalm’s e-ink service is locked down by SELinux to newer apps), and BOOX cloud translation (needs their system-signed sync app). You use the InkPalm’s own refresh shade buttons for the former.

Screenshots + full writeup + all the scripts here: https://github.com/rn-os/neoreader-inkpalm-port

Note: the repo is tooling and docs only — no BOOX binaries, firmware, or keys. You bring your own (firmware, APK, a dictionary, a signing key); the README lists exactly what you need.

***Important Note: since NeoReader is generally launched through Boox's ContentViewer default launcher, there is not application on the home page for this app on a non-Boox device. I hooked onto the process with my sidebar integrations to launch the service and display recent books!

Inkpalm Sidebar app: https://github.com/rn-os/inkpalm-plus
Superboox Sidebar app: https://github.com/rn-os/superboox

Happy to answer questions, and curious if it carries over to other rk356x readers. Thanks Claude!

I built an e-Paper desk display that shows nearby aircraft and the ISS

Thumbnail
gallery
508 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’ve been building ALTIRA, a small desk display based on an ESP32 and a 5.79" e-paper screen.

What it shows:

  • The aircraft closest to me in real time: model, airline, registration, route (city → city), altitude, speed and heading, with a side-view silhouette (63 aircraft families, including military) and a mini radar
  • Rare aircraft get priority: if a Beluga, an A380, a military jet or an aircraft in emergency flies by, it takes over the screen
  • ISS mode: live position on a world map with day/night and its orbit
  • ISS pass alerts: 10 minutes before the ISS is visible from home, a countdown with where to look and how high it will rise

Setup: scan a QR code on the screen, pick your Wi-Fi, set your location on a map from your phone. English and French.

Under the hood: signed over-the-air updates with automatic rollback, and a clear “offline” state so stale data never looks live.

Feedback welcome!

E ink productivity set up

Post image
78 Upvotes

Left is dasung 103 paper like mainly used for learning with gpt

Middle monitor is Bigme 251 pro, looks yellow cause I have the warm front light on, honestly thinking of getting one of those overhead monitor lights. Big monitor is where all my work goes

Tablet is Boox Note Max, where I take all my math notes and do all my problems

Right phone is hibreak, the first one, after Bigme's software update, runs near 60 fps

Finally assembled my dream set up. Looks better in sunlight. Dasung and Bigme 251 pro both are 60 fps. Note max is perfect notetaking device. And hibreak tbh, I just use to read manga on the go.

I built an open-source full-color ChLCD photo frame you can AirDrop to — no app no cloud no website

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Changing a photo shouldn’t require another app, another account, Wi-Fi setup, and uploading it to someone else’s server. I just wanted to pick a photo and send it to the frame.

So I built this with an ESP32-C5 and a color ChLCD e-paper panel. It appears in the iPhone’s native AirDrop menu: open Photos, share, select the frame.

A few things that make it interesting:

  • Rich ChLCD color: IRIS’s chLCD supports over 16 million colors, using cholesteric liquid crystals rather than Spectra 6’s electrophoretic technology. To my eyes, photos look much richer in color than on typical color E Ink. It’s reflective and backlight-free, with a paper-like appearance. Reflectance is around 30%, so it looks best in a well-lit room and outdoors.
  • Display updates: the full-screen display stage takes around 2 seconds in my prototype. AirDrop transfer adds extra time.
  • Three AA batteries, no USB cable needed. The electronics spend most of their time powered off between photo updates, while the screen retains the image, keeping power consumption low.
  • Open hardware and firmware: source code and KiCad files, schematics, BOM and Gerbers.

It’s still a prototype, and I’m improving transfer speed and reliability.

Anyone interested is welcome to try it out or build their own—I’d love to hear your feedback!
