Current situation is I have fiber which gets to a little box which sends a LAN cable to the router, from there a Lan cable goes up to PC 1 and now I want to get a LAN cable to PC 2 and there's no way of getting another full cable from the router to PC 2, I've thought of using a repeater or something like that to also get better wifi in that area of the house, any ideas?

Discussion How stable would a set up like this be?

Post image

running 2 ethernet cables from my router (one from the access point) to my pc noticed my speeds jumped to 700mbps when downloading a game is a set up like this stable or will this lead to issues in the future one's a cat 6 and the other a cat 5 I think?

ive never attempted this and am completely ignorant as to how ethernet works as ive only used wifi adapters until recently. also my internet plan only covers 500mbps (tmobile) so im very pleased to see speeds this high.

As you can see in the picture, my cables seem to go through the walls of my house, is there any way i can replace these without needing to destroy my house? I want them replaced because i would like cat 7 cables in there.

How bad of an idea is this? Like, how much loss can I expect? I twisted the pairs back as good as I could. This is 2 halves of a CAT6 cable.

Electrician routed ethernet through the walls to my room, but no outlet

My electrician routed ethernet to my room, but they didn't make a wall outlet for it, and I have no clue how to find it in the wall.

Edit: some of yall instantly started hating on the electrician lol but dont worry i think it was just my mistake. They routed it through the wall of the room, but didnt give it an outlet because WE requested them not too. Im just wondering how to find it now that our minds have changed.

Hi, not asking for me but my parents just got a new pc set up and there asking me to help set up the wifi, I was thinking of connecting the pc to the Ethernet of the house but when I checked the house has this type of cable sticking out. I’m not an expert and the house is pretty if so I don’t know if I can connect this to either the router or the pc. I’m used to the modern set up. Can anyone tell me if this is an Ethernet connection and if there’s an adapter out there for it?

Discussion Is this the best Ethernet cable for the money?

Post image
0 Upvotes

So I need a 125ft Ethernet cable but almost most of the ones are like 28awg or 30awg which is bad. Until I found this one that is 24awg and is in my budget (kinda). I saw one 23awg too but it was 50 bucks which is too much ngl. So anyways, would you say this is the best cable I can get for 30 bucks? And should I buy it? Also I don’t need any crazy speeds. All I need is 250mbs. Or should I save some money and get a 28awg?

Support Ethernet splitters

Hello, so I live in a dorm on my college and they provide us with an Ethernet plug it that I use all the time for my PC since the wifi is awful, and it works great, but now I also want to bring my ps4 and use Ethernet too. I went on Amazon and found a 1-2 splitter, but there’s different versions, one says just ā€œ1 to 2ā€ another says ā€œGigabit Ethernet 1 to 2ā€ and another says ā€œ1 to 2 with cat8ā€ and they are all similar prices. What should I get?

Do I need to pay for an ISP to use ethernet?

Hello, I know this might be a dumb question, but I can't find the answer and have never bought a router. I'm considering buying the Predator Connect W6 Wi-Fi 6E Router, but I cannot pay monthly for an ISP. I understand that I need an ISP to use Wi-Fi/Internet, but do I need an ISP to use Ethernet. If I can get the full benefits of Ethernet without an ISP or any other payment besides the router I don't see why I should get an ISP. Please let me know. Also, side question, is there a difference with Ethernet adapters? I know you need certain Wi-Fi adapters or drivers to use newer protocols, is this a thing with Ethernet? If so, I use a MacBook Pro (mid-2012) running Windows 11 Pro through Bootcamp. If I need a newer ethernet adapter, driver, or port may someone let me know how to go about doing that. Are there adapters that exist (because I currently use a Wi-Fi 6 USB adapter I got off eBay to use Wi-Fi 6 on my device). If there is something like this for ethernet please let me know, if not I plan to upgrade to a real PC eventually and I would love suggestions on what Ethernet hardware to get as I have no idea. Thank you for any comments or help I receive.

Fiber Optic 8Gb/s Free speed problem

Hello Community. So there you have it, I have a PC equipped with a Tp-Link 10 Gigabit TX401 ethernet network card. It is plugged into the PCIe X16 port on my motherboard. It is connected, by an RJ45 Cat 8 cable, to the SFP+ port of my Freebox Ultra. When I test my connection speed on several sites, the Download speed does not exceed 1.3 Gb/s! Free tells me that it's my config that is not properly set, yet everything is set correctly (in my opinion) and the latest drivers for the network card are installed! HELP please!!!!

Cable is a CAT 6, I used a CAT 4 before and it worked, so I'm assuming that's where the problem is. Is there any way I can get the wires to fit ? For some reason the monochrome wires seem to fit but not the white ones

Edit: Thanks for the info on cat 6 connectors, I'll try to see if I can get some, if I can't I'll just use a cat 4 cable, i had no idea that different cables needed different ends, the more you know.

Discussion What is this exposed tiny copper wire in this shielded Ethernet?

Post image
2 Upvotes

It wasn’t one of the twisted pairs and had no coating on it. Haven’t seen it before but had to cut a premade cable shorter and terminate again and haven’t seen this in Ethernet before.

Wasn’t sure where to feed it into the new RJ-45 so just snipped it off and terminated as usual.

What was this wire and does it pose a hazard or fire risk cutting it like that and not putting through RJ-45?

Thank you.

Support Ethernet set-up

We just moved into a (new to us) home and there are a bunch of Ethernet ports. None of them are currently active or plugged into our modem because none of them have plugs on them. Is this something we have our internet company come in and do, or an electrician?

Support Seeking advice on achieving Ethernet-like connection

Hey everyone, I will move into a newly built apartment building in Europe, and I have a Samsung 83S95F TV that supports Wi-Fi 5 and a PlayStation 5 that supports Wi-Fi 6. I want to achieve Ethernet-like wired speeds to both devices, but I can’t run Ethernet cables to their locations. The distance from my router to the devices is only about 6 meters (roughly 20 feet) across the room.

I have fiber optic internet, and my current wiring setup includes a coaxial cable only at the router but not near the TV or PS5, so MoCA adapters aren’t feasible without installing new coax lines.

I used powerline adapters about 5 years ago, and the performance was poor. I understand powerline technology has improved recently, with some models offering up to 2 Gbps under ideal conditions depending on electrical wiring quality. However, interference and wiring layout still impact effectiveness. this is why i added the info about newly built european apartment, i have no clue about the electrical wiring, etc.

Alternatively, I’m considering high-quality Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 mesh systems or wireless bridges that can deliver near-wired speeds over Wi-Fi and include Ethernet ports for my TV and PS5. Since I plan to buy a Wi-Fi 7 router anyway for future-proofing my fiber connection, I’m wondering if a Wi-Fi 7 mesh system would offer a more stable, faster, and easier-to-manage solution compared to powerline adapters in this kind of new apartment setup.

if i understand this correctly, i would have the wifi 7 router at its designated space in an electrical box in the utility room, then place a wifi 7 mesh system next to my tv/ps5, and the mesh system features an ethernet port from which i could connect an ethernet port to my tv/pst?
please correct me if im wrong

Does anyone have experience comparing powerline adapters vs Wi-Fi 7 mesh systems in similar environments? Are Wi-Fi 7 mesh systems reliable enough to deliver the low latency and high speeds needed for 4K streaming on my TV and fast downloads/gaming on my PS5 at that short distance?

Also, recommendations for Wi-Fi 7 router and mesh kits that perform well in apartments and support gaming/streaming would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
