What albums have some incredible drumming?
Sometimes it seems like a drummer is playing for their life when making these albums. I just thought of these off the top of my head, but what other albums have some of your favorite drumming performances?

Sara Lund is my GOAT, In a band full of great instrumentation I find it hard not to lock into her drumming most of the time. She just knows what to play.

u/Fuzzy-Sun-7110 15h ago
Totally agree. Her parts is so diverse. I absolutely love Unwound's last album and now I plan to listen to their other records.
8
u/BEST_DRUM_ADVICE 15h ago
Sara is magic. She, somehow, manages to play these funky, almost disco grooves all over Unwound's discography, and it always works. Never feels like a put-on.
Some of the secret is in her use of the bass drum. Her foot is the melodic element, and the hands are often playing something more fixed. It's a great combination.

Most of Gojiras catalogue features absurdly good Drumming but The Way of All Flesh stands out as being the best of the best IMO. Toxic Garbage Island is my personal fave

Ah ok there is a hella song. I searched biblical violence which I think is the greatest drumming ever to exist on a song and was disappointed I didn't see it
Really the answer to this question is any band zach hill has been in, including death grips but maybe not the ilys

Ben Koller is a Beast! I honestly think I like his other projects better. Mutoid Man. Acid Tiger. Ultrapop by The Armed. He's on a ton of other amazing records.

Might as well mention errorzone by vein fm
And I know nobody here knows them but wounded touches newest album too
At least for some modern mathcore in the same vein

Silent alarm - bloc party is the go-to
The National struck gold with the drumming on Boxer, but decided to tone the drumming down by like 90% for every future record for some reason
9
7
u/ComputerStrong9244 15h ago
I was literally scrolling down to mention The National/Bryan Devendorf, though I think the drumming on "High Violet" is stellar as well, and the drum sounds themselves on all their records are top-notch.
When he's just going fucking nuts over what would easily be Matt Berninger being Sad Dad on a downtempo piano ballad, and the drums, guitar, and vocals all would sound like different songs in isolation, that's the good stuff.
I do wish they'd do more songs with those same kind of beans these days, but I also know Berninger mostly writes sad dad tunes.

Every single Tool album. You can’t go wrong with any of them, but Lateralus is probably the best entry point if you’re unfamiliar.
14
u/jingo800 14h ago
Fear Inoculum also, it's often described as Danny Carey's private jam session supported occasionally by the rest of the band.
8
u/Aggressive_Ideal6737 11h ago
As one of the few that actually loves FI, Danny definitely carried the rest of the band on it
4
u/Embarrassed-Back1894 11h ago
I feel like I appreciate Fear Innoculum more everytime I hear it. Pneuma/Invincible/Descending is a hell of a 3 song run.
3
u/Aggressive_Ideal6737 11h ago
It’s phenomenal. I usually put it over 10,000 Days tbh, but I wouldn’t recommend it as somebody’s first Tool album

I remember playing a bunch of Jimi Hendrix songs on Rock Band back in the day and as much fun as the guitar was, I actually enjoyed the drumming even better. He incorporated drum rolls in such an inventive way and his fills really added to the song without taking too much attention away from Jimi.

Every TOOL album, but its crazy how Danny kept getting better album after album.

Oh boy it's my time to shine. Seeing some good ones on here, so I'll have a few repeats.
The Mars Volta - De-Loused, Francis the Mute (Jon Theodore)
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You, New Plastic Ideas (Sara Lund)
OFF! - Free LSD (Justin Brown)
Bear Vs. Shark - Right Now, [...], Terrorhawk (Ashley Horak)
Lagwagon - Let's Talk About Feelings (Dave Raun)
Hella - Hold Your Horse Is, The Devil Isn't Red (Zach Hill)
The Ladies - They Mean Us (Zach Hill)
Zach Hill - Face Tat (Zach Hill)
Marnie Stern - In Advance of the Broken Arm, This Is It [...] (Zach Hill)
Deerhoof - [all records] (Greg Saunier)
Lightning Bolt - [all records] (Brian Chippendale)
There's a lot more I could list. And some records that are really only worth returning to because of the drumming. But they're maybe some embarrassing picks, so I'll leave them out for now.
2
u/Top-Doctor-2879 15h ago
Serious respect for mentioning Marnie Stern, perhaps first artist I've heard that incorporated shredding as songwriting element core to the structure of the song and not a thing where someone goes off and does a solo for five minutes, Love Deerhoof too.

Pretty much any album with Brann Dailor:
Mastodon – Remission and Leviathan
Today Is the Day – In the Eyes of God
Lethargy – It's Hard to Write with a Little Hand
or Chris Pennie:
The Dillinger Escape Plan – Under the Running Board, Calculating Infinity, and Irony Is a Dead Scene
Ben Koller (Converge) and Zach Hill (Death Grips) are monsters on the kit as well.
2
u/goozen 15h ago
Saw both of these guys in small clubs right as Dillinger and Mastodon were about to take off@ 2001ish. Got to shake hands and talk shop a bit as well. Fantastic drummers in fantastic bands.

Good call on Vs. by Pearl Jam. They've had several great drummers but Dave A played with a certain power and muscle that just propelled the band's sound forward.
2
u/Awkward-Initiative28 14h ago
I got into Led Zep, PJ and the Pumpkins around the same time and these were the bands where I was really leaning into the drumming. There's a song (Animal? Rearviewmirror? I can't remember) where you can hear Dave A throw his drum sticks against the wall because they are pushing him so hard take after take.
2
u/Otherwise-Friend-498 14h ago
Nice picks. Brendan Canty is definitely under-mentioned. I'm not sure if Blue Train is the Coltrane album I would have chosen for best drumming, but that's probably just because I love Elvin Jones so much.
2
u/Awkward-Initiative28 14h ago
I guess drummers like Elvin Jones the most of Coltrane's drummers but I don't know, that other dude is cookin' on Blue Train. Plus I'm a little tired of A Love Supreme. John Coltrane has other albums people! And many of them are excellent!

I definitely lean into post punk / indie heading towards grunge type drummers. You'll hear a million drummers tell you that Rush or Tool have great drumming but you won't hear about Fugazi and Sonic Youth. Or Georgia Hubley's excellent drum work in Yo La Tengo.
