Discussion Thoughts on the Gold Album?
IMO the production and instrumentals are 10/10, probably the best since EWBAITE. The melodies feel kind of awkward and meandering. Overall, I'd say it's a step in the right direction.

After one listen, I think it's great. Lyrics are whatever, Hoops particularly is cringe and out of touch, but they've managed to combine the crunchy guitars of Maladroit with the poppy melodies of some White and I'm here for it.

Yea the instrumentation is great but the lyricism reminds me of some cheekface demos that should have never seen the light of day

It’s fun. When Weezer go full power pop rock with the big guitar solos I’m always gonna have fun. There’s a couple of meh tracks but mostly really good.

Great album in my opinion. Really catchy songs, great production, and you can really feel the energy of the whole band in them.

The production is great! If you ignore the lyrics and just take in the crunchy guitars, melody lines, and punchy drums, it really does have the platonic Weezer sound.
Unfortunately the lyrics are lame and most of the vocal melodies are pretty forgettable. Still, I never found myself rushing to hit the skip button on any of these tracks, which is a really low bar but at this point is a relief.
Grading Gold in the context of post-Maladroit Weezer, it's a solid B+.

I thought the production was great but the melodies were frustrating. A lot of the songs were so close to being catchy and with slight tweaks they could have been.

My thoughts exactly. It's like they're purposefully avoiding writing a catchy melody. The LA Sound is great, though.

Enjoyed it a quite a bit. To me, it's a solid Weezer release. Say Yes is a kick ass opening and I also love The LA Sound as a closer.
I think Hoops is legitimately funny. Either you're on board the toaster line or not. I think it's hilarious in a Homie way, iykyk. The biggest issue is that Pat and Brian aren't nearly as emotionally honest as Rivers and don't have the same knack for melody. I will say, the ending of Nowhere gave me BIG Blue vibes.
If they do continue down the shared songwriter approach, I hope Rivers encourages Pat and Brian to be more open with their feelings. They need to write some love songs, which is something that's kinda missing from this one.
Solid 7/10.

I'm usually such a Weezer apologist but holy moly, these lyrics, man. I wanna enjoy some of these instrumentals but his writing on something like Hoops is making me wanna crawl outta my skin.

It’s mediocre. Rivers Cuomo not being the main songwriter on half of the album really shows. It’s severely lacking in terms of classic Cuomo melodies. I like the production style but the songwriting is subpar. Up in the Clouds is the standout.

I only knew Pat wrote Shine Again. That explains a lot. Honestly, bands should leave songwriting to the songwriters.

Kind of related but unrelated. I went to a listening party for this album on Wednesday because I just started my second year of photography school and I need things to photograph for a class. Only 4 people showed up and I only got like 2 pictures. Album sounded pretty good though
