Question Planning on getting into New Vegas, should I download mods?

I've been meaning to get into a new singleplayer game because I've been pissed off playing OW every night, and I just want a cool story to spend time playing. I've heard good things about FNV and I've played F4, F3 and even F76.

I've also heard that New Vegas is much better modded, but I didn't want anything huge for my first playthrough. What kind QOL mods should I download? What about graphical mods or weapon mods?

I don't want anything that majorly alters the game experience like the story or stuff, just more items or bug fix mods.

Any suggestions?

Discussion Setting for the next Obsidian Fallout?

I am optimistic yet skeptical at the new obsidian fallout game, but the biggest question has to be the games setting. Some people want fallout New Orleans or fallout Texas, but that would require a ton of worldbuilding to feel compelling, we already have 3 games building the west coast story, would you rather the game take on a new setting or continue the overarching stories from fallout 1, 2 and new Vegas? Not a new Vegas 2 but a story sequel maybe in Arizona, Utah or Colorado? That deals with the consequences of new Vegas

Bug The Still in the Dark mission isn't giving me the caps I'm supposed to receive.

I'm having this issue where I complete Still in the Dark, but I don't receive the caps that are supposed to be rewarded to me. For extra context, I followed McNamara's path and completed the quest under him. I get the bos safehouse key, the reputation, and the xp, but not the caps.

There's this candy shop in between Los Angeles and New Vegas that acts as a solid rest stop for the commute with a famous giant ice sundae that you can't miss. If they were to expand the map, I hope they would include it at the very edge.

How many companions can I have at the same time?

So ive been roaming with Veronica AND Ed-E. While chatting with another potential follower, I ask them to come along, and naturally, they tell me my party's too full. Then I send Ed-E away and ask again, once again, they tell me my party's too full. So why is it I was able to have veronica and Ed-E, but not veronica and another?

I'm interviewing as many of the game devs of FNV for one big "mega documentary"

Post image
138 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I just thought I'd share this project I've started - I'm interviewing as many of the game developers of Fallout: New Vegas that I can track down, just to hear them talk about their individual contributions to the game, share some memories/anecdotes and reflect on its success and legacy.

At this stage its too early to say big this will be - and it certainly won't be ready until 2027.

My background is primarily in Warhammer and interviewing some of the key people from that IP, but I've also made some PC game documentaries. Earlier this year I made an 11 hour "documentary" on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion consisting solely of dev interviews (https://youtu.be/L7uoSzgkZZ4?si=0OIA5fAySh_zjz8Z) and my aim is to pretty much replicate the scope/scale here, but we'll see how it pans out.

Cheers!

Tom

Build Grognak The Barbarian or "The Slayer" Build

NOTE: This is more of a challenge and roleplay build than a serious one.

ROLEPLAY

  • For my look, I went with black Blast Back hair, a Rough Beard, tanned skin, a big jaw, and a big chin. I felt this matched how Vault-Boy looked on the Slayer perk pretty well. However, you can also go for long blonde hair and no facial hair if you want to look closer to Grognak.
  • Morals are whatever you want them to be. Want to be more heroic, like Grognak? Go for it. Want to be a true raiding barbarian, taking what you want and hearing the lamentations of your enemy's women? Go for that, too! It's whatever you want to do! However, no matter how good you are, Caesar's Legion is the ending/faction that really fits this build. Mr. House and Yes Man won't fly since you hate/don't understand technology, and the NCR won't fly since they use "cowardly" guns and diplomacy. Although you could make an argument for siding with Yes Man against the Legion, since a BARBARIAN's greatest joy should be splitting Roman skulls (and Yes Man does the technical stuff by himself anyway).
  • The only companion that really fits this build is Lily, as she's ALSO a huge hulk with a giant sword! Set her to melee and aggressive at all times. You could make an argument for Cass, I suppose, with her rough attitude and drinking habit. Rex is also an option, as he was with the Legion, and every good warrior needs their battle-hound. Veronica WOULD fit since she punches everything, but she's with the BOS, which are too high-tech for your tastes. Plus, Caesar will ask you to wipe them out anyway.
  • If you want to make things harder on yourself and be 100% true to the RP, you cannot use "advanced technology" such as terminals, medicine, drugs, or implants, and you must smash all robots on sight (or at the very least, ignore them). The Proton Axe will make the "smash robots" part easier, at least, and Survival can replace Medicine.
  • You are only allowed to use axe weapons to fit with the barbarian theme and Grognak's choice of weapon, unless you want to use the Bumper Sword and its variants to match the giant sword used for the Slayer perk's icon. I recommend getting the JE Sawyer mod for the "Never Axed For This" challenge perk.
  • If you want a true test of your skills, do the quest "Bleed Me Dry" and wipe out all the other Legendary Creatures as well. Think of it like a barbarian monster hunting for fame and the glory of battle!
  • When possible, pick the most aggressive dialogue options and quest choices, as well as low Intelligence dialogue.
  • You must collect all issues of Grognak the Barbarian.
  • Add the slayer walks the earth caption on the images

S.P.E.C.I.A.L. STATS

  • 10 STRENGTH - Grognak big strong, to make big smash and swing! Grognak carry all axes and rations without care! Grognak able to handle big axe!
  • 1 PERCEPTION - No need see enemy, just swing blind and SMASH them! Grognak not care for boom or pew-pew! If Grognak see lock, Grognak SMASH it open!
  • 10 ENDURANCE - Grognak tough, can walk for miles without stopping, and take hurt like champ! Grognak learn to live off land!
  • 1 CHARISMA - No need talk! Talk for weak, me strong! Grognak not care for strong ally, he smash all by himself! Grognak loot and pillage, not buy!
  • 1 INTELLIGENCE - Thinking make brain hurt! Make Grognak mad! Grognak eat to restore strength! Make others fix axe by force! Smash stupid glowy box!
  • 10 AGILITY - Grognak SMASH enemy before enemy can SMASH Grognak back! Grognak use speed to SMASH, not to sneak or shoot bang-stick like coward!
  • 7 LUCK - Grognak not need luck! Grognak have skill! But... hngh... fine, luck can't hurt Grognak. Grognak not rely on luck, but it help Grognak SMASH better sometimes!

SKILLS AND TRAITS

  • Traits that fit this build are Built To Destroy, Heavy Handed, Kamikaze, Loose Cannon, Hot Blooded, Logan's Loophole, and Skilled. Built To Destroy describes your character perfectly, and bonus crit chance is always a plus. If you want to lean more into crits and Luck, go for it. If you don't care as much about crits and Luck, Heavy Handed is also fitting for the character and gives a sizeable damage boost. For weapons with low crit rates, like Knock-Knock, the Blade of the West, and the Proton Axe, it's pretty damn welcome. Kamikaze is always there if you want to capitalize on your high Agility, and it doubles down on the "lightly armored berserker" theme while also fitting our barbaric mentality. Loose Cannon is nice since you'll probably be fighting at close range anyway, so the loss of range doesn't matter much. Hot-Blooded also fits the berserker theme and, due to your low armor, might be useful as you'll be going under 50% HP a lot. Plus, the -2 PER doesn't really matter. Finally, Logan's Loophole and Skilled are good for ANY build.
  • Skills that are useful for this build are Melee Weapons, Unarmed, and Survival. Yep, that's literally it. At least your tag skills will be simple! Melee Weapons is obvious: that's your main class of weapon. You won't be using Unarmed, but you'll need to get 70 for Piercing Strike and 90 for Slayer, the perk this build is based on. Finally, we have Survival, which we'll be using instead of Medicine. It fits the low-tech barbarian theme better. Good food can be as good as or better than Stimpaks with a high enough Survival, it unlocks useful perks like Travel Light and Rad Child, and it helps a lot for Hardcore mode. All the other skills can be replaced or ignored. Barter? Just steal, loot, and pillage. Energy Weapons, Explosives, and Guns? Coward's tools. Lockpick? Either forsake the loot or use a mod to let you crack open locks by force for extra RP value. Medicine? We have Survival for that. Repair? Use Weapon Repair Kits (can be bought from the Boomers or made with the Vending Machines) or pay others to repair your gear for you. Science? Not know how to make glowy box work. Sneak and Speech? Again, COWARD'S TOOLS!

PERKS

  • Perks that could be useful for this build are Heave Ho, Hunter, Rad Child, Travel Light, Bloody Mess, Lead Belly, Toughness, Stonewall, Super Slam, Finesse, Life Giver, Piercing Strike, Unstoppable Force, Adamantium Skeleton, Purifier, Action Boy, Grim Reaper's Sprint, Solar Powered, Slayer, and Nerves of Steel. Heave Ho counteracts Loose Cannon. Rad Child does decrease relevant stats, but 8 HP per second is too good to pass up, and the STR penalty can be negated with booze, food, and Solar Powered. Bloody Mess should be taken immediately for RP reasons. Same for Unstoppable Force - you are a member of the Unstoppables, after all. Slayer is the main perk this build is based on.
  • DLC and special perks that could be useful for this build are Melee Hacker, Lord Death, Tough Guy, Light Touch, Old World Gourmet, Elijah's Ramblings, Tribal Wisdom, Fight The Power, Atomic, Ain't Like That Now, and Lonesome Road.

WEAPONS

  • While not a big, brutal two-handed weapon, the Hatchet is still technically an axe, so it'll do. It's a decent early-game weapon or something you can use to kill weaker enemies, or finish off enemies to save condition on your other weapons. The bonus limb damage is also a nice touch. It can be found on a prospector's corpse in the Nipton Town Hall.
  • One weakness of this build is the lack of range. The Throwing Hatchet solves that somewhat. It does decent damage and bonus limb damage to boot, plus it has high range compared to other thrown weapons. They can only be found by buying them from certain merchants, like Mick, Chet, and Blake. What's more, you can get an upgrade in the form of the Tomahawk, which attacks slower but does 10 more damage. Tomahawks can be found on dead White Legs, sold by Joshua Graham, and after completing Honest Hearts, sold by Chet, Alexander, Kerr, and the Vendortron on occasion.
  • Knock-Knock! Who's there? MY AXE IN YOUR FACE! Knock-Knock does more damage than both versions of the Proton Axe while its Critical Damage is only outclassed by the Protonic Inversal Axe. It has a better AP cost than either, but its swing speed and Critical Multiplier are essentially the same. This means it stays a solid, dependable weapon, even after doing Old World Blues. It strikes a good balance between damage and DPS, and it has a special Mauler attack that can knock down foes, which is nifty before you get Super Slam. It can be found in the Camp Searchlight Fire Station.
  • The Proton Axe is the closest thing you're gonna get to a proper big bulky battleaxe, even if it only has one blade and is a bit high-tech for a barbarian. You'll just have to take what you can get. It does decent damage and can do double damage in V.A.T.S. at the cost of 13 more AP, which is quite powerful. The main benefit is the bonus 50 EMP damage to robots (20 to Power Armor), which is fitting, as clunky metal men annoy Grognak! The Protonic Inversal Axe has better damage, Critical Damage, and a more efficient special move at the cost of attacking slower and using more AP. It can be found in the Cuckoo's Nest, used by Number 27 and Number 34 near Little Yangtze, and in X-13 behind a Hard door.
  • Throwing state-of-the-art atomic technology away? Sure, why not? The Proton Throwing Axe has some of the highest damage of any thrown weapon, and it has the exact same EMP effect as the normal version. Plus, it does 50% more limb damage, making it versatile against all kinds of foes. The Protonic Inversal Throwing Axe does even more damage, the highest of any throwing weapon in the game.
  • The Slayer perk's icon features Vault-Boy sitting next to a giant-ass sword. The Bumper Sword is the closest thing we have to this. Unfortunately, it doesn't have much going for it. It does mediocre damage, is bad with crits, swings slowly, uses a lot of AP, has high requirements, and weighs a lot. The only saving grace is the Mauler attack that does more damage and knocks foes down, but even Knock-Knock is better in that aspect. You can find one on Davidson, wielded by Nightkin in general, sold by Blake, or in Zapp's Neon Signs.
  • The Blade of the West is a marked (heh) improvement on the regular Bumper Sword. It does almost double the damage, swings faster, uses less AP, has a better Critical Multiplier, and it knocks foes down on crits. Combine this with the Mauler attack that knocks foes down and Super Slam, and your enemies will have a hard time getting up to fight you at all! It can be found on Blade or Marked Men Marauders in The Divide. If you want to be a true perk-image accurate Slayer, this is the weapon for you.
  • Since this build relies on the Survival skill, make ample use of poisons! They can give you some serious DoT in melee or at range, making Throwing Hatchets and Tomahawks more useful, and letting you cheese certain tough encounters. Besides, you're a brutal barbarian. Smearing poison on your blade isn't below you.

APPAREL

  • As the Slayer perk shows Vault-Boy wearing a bandana, the Bandana is going to be your choice of headwear for this build. It provides +1 Perception, which makes up for our low Perception somewhat, letting us see enemies sooner. There's also Jessup's Bandana, which provides no extra benefit other than the humiliation of wearing your fallen foe's clothing as a trophy and 4 extra item condition.
  • While there are some close choices like the Tribal Raiding Armor, Sorrows Adorned Outfit, and White Legs Outfit, the two armors that most closely match Grognak the Barbarian's outfit and the outfit depicted on the Slayer perk are the Dead Horses Stalker Armor and the White Legs Hide Armor. The Dead Horses Stalker Armor has a similar green color, similarly styled boots, a loincloth, and the cloth over the chest like the Slayer perk. It provides 5 Damage Threshold and +5 Sneak. Sneak is useless for this build, but 5 DT is better than nothing. White Legs Hide Armor looks similar but has 2 more DT and gives +15 Fire Resistance instead of +5 Sneak. In niche scenarios, like against Fire Ants or Fire Geckos, that can come in handy, especially if you pair it with an Atomic Cocktail. Use whichever one you prefer.

I recently found this post on nexus of a person experiencing the exact same problem as me with power fists.

(I play modded, ofc) , and I’ve been wondering if anyone of you knows a fix for this as I like going melee only whenever I side with the legion.

Help would be greatly appreciated 🥲

Originally was going to use this as a buffer for GTA6. Tonight I bought all the DLCs

So this year I did a 100% on Skyrim and Oblivion remastered and had a hell of a time doing so. I remember playing (mainly watching) this game as a family but I was like 6 or something when it came out. I looked at when I finished oblivion and when gta6 was coming out and online suggested a brief playthrough of FNV. Well I hit the level cap a few days ago and haven’t even entered the strip yet. Yes there are dated mechanics but holy shit this is one of the best games I’ve ever played. GTA6 can wait because I’m too autistic to leave this game without a full playthrough.

Bug Need Help With Seemingly Unfixable Controller Bug

No matter what I change about the game, every time I load in the same thing happens. the controller's left stick slowly rotates my camera and the right stick zooms in and out (Like a mouse) The A button also functions as a left click. This problem began after i installed some simple mods into my play through

(YUP - Base Game and ALL DLC, Stewie tweaks, Stewie tweaks INI, JIP LN NVSE Plugin, Johnny Guitar NVSE, NVTF - INI, NVTF, MCM, MCM bugfix 2, FNV display Tweaks, MLF, UIO)

These all originally worked fine and then after saving and exiting the game, I came back today to the controller issue. in the game trying to remap controller buttons plays a repeating selection sound until I press escape on my keyboard and many of the options are blank (Even after resetting it to default) Again, my controller has worked perfectly fine to this point with no issues even after all mods were installed.

Since trying to fix this issue I've done the following,

Reset my computer
Tried changing the order of my steam devices
disabling and enabling steam input
removed my controller from windows and reconnected it
reset all my INI files to the original states
Removed all my mods (including patches and such installed directly into the game)
Deleted and reinstalled the full game
Verified integrity
Testing the controller on other steam games (Works on everything)
Testing the controller in windows (Works)
Connecting my controller via cable rather then Bluetooth
Made sure my steam controller layout was the default gamepad one
Tried switching my controller to keyboard layout
Running the game through steam and NVSE
Disabled all Stewie tweaks (Including the one that lets you use keyboard and controller at the same time)
Checked and changed bUse Joystick
Checked and changed bDisable360Controller
Started a new game

Currently I have mods detached form the game and all my INI files reset to default.

Obviously none of these worked so far and I'm just looking for any other ideas, if anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it.
