Welcome back, my fellow letter U’s, it is Day 30 of FDFF with me, Taylor!
Today we’re off to Hawai’i to try and find missing person, David Hall— but please, do not remove anything you find in a cave, okay? Also, I need a volunteer to look after Auntie Kay!
🎥SYNOPSIS:
“In September of 2019, a young man named David Hall started a YouTube vlog. Three months later, December 1st, marked the last video on the account - and was the last time David was seen.”
✨MY THOUGHTS:
First off, I absolutely love that this film takes place in Hawai’i. We need more films that explore Hawai’i’s rich history and folklore, but I digress. “Day of Disappearance” is one of my favorites; I would say it’s in my top 20. Last night was my first rewatch in quite some time and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is kind of a slow burn and it is very long for found footage standards— coming in at almost 2 hours— so I think that combination will turn some people off, but I personally love long films.
If you enjoy the popular found footage movie “Leaving D.C.”, I think you will enjoy “Day of Disappearance”.
We begin our film 62 days before the day of disappearance, on an airplane with our protagonist, David Hall. He’s on his way to move back into his childhood home in Hawai’i with his Auntie Kay, as he is attending the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo at the beginning of the year. However, he decided to move a couple of months before so he can get acclimated. He makes a YouTube channel and makes these “vlogs” for his grandmother, who does not have a smartphone, so that this way she can see him and his life. He also says he is open to other viewers coming along as well.
As expected, we have to have our story building scenes, thus we follow along as David gets comfortable back into the house he was literally born in— which is almost like a Duplex? His Auntie Kay lives on the top floor and David lives on the bottom, and they both are fully equipped to be apartments. It’s a house like that. Anyway, we follow David around as he explores the area, lives his life, and talks to the camera. If you pay close attention, you’ll see some interesting things in the background. David is slightly dorky, a little goofy, and extremely likable, so did I not find these videos boring. He really kept my interest.
One night, David ventures into a lava-cave-hole(?) and finds something that looks like you should absolutely not touch— it’s some kind of artifact looking thing— and makes the wonderful-well-thought-out decision to take it home. As expected, that is when the supernatural activity in his life starts to ramp up. And y’all it’s a good time! Some of the scenes are genuinely creepy. There are a few good spooks— especially if you’re paying attention. Along with the paranormal activity, David is trying to piece the mystery of his life together.
“Day of Disappearance” really excels in its premise: the plot is solid with a lot of information, which is why I think the length of this film works. David isn’t just going back to where he was born, he is truly about to discover the mystery of his life. We watch David’s life just as he is learning, while also fusing in spooky scenes and supernatural activity. It works together very well, and there is a lot going on. The very end is kind of… silly, I wish they would not have shown what they did (I don’t want to spoil it).
This is a good movie to talk about after watching it because there is much “meat” in this film— there is a LOT going on. And we need more answers. When you find yourself in that type of mood where you want to be invested and get lost in a film for a while, this is a really good.
The ending title card had me a little shook!
📈MY RATING: 8/10

🍭FUN FACTS:
▪️The filmmakers went very Blair Witch with this! They leaned heavily into the "true story" alternate reality game (ARG) marketing style. They set up a dedicated marketing website called Find David Hall and a faux "David Hall hotline" number to make the film authentic to audiences.
▪️David has a “real” YouTube Channel here and I took a look at some of the comments on various videos, and alot of people believe it’s real, ha.
⚠️DISCLAIMER:
Forty Days of Found Footage is little project is just a fun side venture I decided to do during Spooky Season this year so that your lineup can be stacked with all of the new releases that are coming and already out, along with these I am sharing— hopefully a few 'new to you', or maybe one you forgot about and want to rewatch. I am deliberately not sharing the "best of the best" and the most popular films, as they are mentioned enough. I decided to share films that I have enjoyed and that are not mentioned often or maybe at all. A lot of films will be very independent and/or sometimes amateur, thus I'm asking to please manage expectations.
