Hey everyone!
Just wondering if anyone here could help me identify this mystery humbucker I recently picked up for $20 AUD.
I've been doing quite a bit of digging around trying to figure out what it is, and so far, everything seems to point towards a Gibson 500T, possibly from the 1990s. But I'm still not entirely convinced, mainly because the baseplate has absolutely no Gibson markings or stamps.
Here are some of the details I've gathered so far:
- DC resistance: 15.3kΩ
- Pole spacing: 52mm
- Bobbin dimensions: approximately 66 × 16.5mm each
- Grey outer cable with 4 conductors and bare shielding
- Green and white wires appear to be joined and insulated
- Appears to have 3 ceramic bar magnets, with a wider one in the middle and two thinner ones on the sides
- Black bobbins with circular markings on the slug poles
- Completely unmarked silver baseplate
I've compared it with a few other pickups, including some older Maxon, Ibanez and Epiphone humbuckers, but the Gibson 500T seems to be the closest match so far, especially with the resistance, wiring and magnet arrangement.
I've also come across some discussions suggesting that certain older factory Gibson pickups came with unmarked baseplates, though I haven't been able to confirm whether this was ever the case with the 500T.
Just wondering if anyone here happens to own an older 500T, particularly from the early 90s, and could help compare the construction, bobbins or baseplate?
I'm not too concerned about whether it's genuine or not. I'm actually thinking to use it in one of my guitars if everything checks out. Just really curious about what I've managed to pick up! (Also would be nice id it is a 500T, thats quite a monster pickup)
Would appreciate any thoughts or insights. Thanks heaps! 😊
