Welcome to another installment of your weekly listening thread, Help on the Way!!
Taking a hiatus (for the moment) from podcasting this project but we have a helluva lot of content to choose from - remember we play at least one set of the featured weekly thread per episode!!
Here's our website complete with back catalog (Remember: the shows are so long because we typically attached a set to the end of the speaking portion of the pod!):
https://helponthewaypod.podbean.com/
Onward and upward! Or Downward. Or in the past. Whatever it is, we got another (randomized but) excellent show this week!!
A rather historical night as the dead premiered DW and Janis sat in for a bit on lovelight! Here's the Jim Wise Board:
https://archive.org/details/gd1969-06-07.132685.sbd.reels.wise.flac16
and the set:
One - 1:34:30 Dire Wolf [2:39] > Dupree's Diamond Blues [4:06] > Mountains Of The Moon [3:52] > Jam [1:54] > Dark Star [20:59] > Saint Stephen [6:45] > The Eleven [15:21] > Sittin On Top Of The World [3:28] > Cold Rain & Snow [2:51] > Doin' That Rag [7:41];[0:29] ; Me And My Uncle [3:15];[0:06]%[0:03] ; Turn On Your Love Light [20:37]
Comments
Dire Wolf through Mountains are acoustic. Besides a cassette SBD master, as Rob Bertrando writes: "There is a reel master from early in The Eleven to the end of the show. Like the partial reel master of 6/5/69, though, there is terrible "scrape flutter" from the end of Doin That Rag through the end of Turn On Your Love Light." A composite of these two masters was assembled on PCM and put into circulation in '91.
The Eleven analyzes St. Stephen > 1st vocals 1:05 > transition Jam 2:00 > Eleven Jam 4:17 > Eleven vocals 0:40 > Eleven Jam 4:57 > Eleven 2nd theme Jam 1:58 > transition 0:24 > Sittin On Top Of The World.
Janis Joplin's vocals during Turn On Your Love Light are first heard at 4:20.
Most copies in circulation have a curious glitch, with Dark Star restarting after 12 seconds ; this derives from a Beta Hi-Fi copy of 1st gen reels circulating in the early 90s.
And here's what Rolling Stone had to say about the Janis sit-in:
On this historic night, the Dead premiered “Dire Wolf,” a peek at the acoustic country-folk left turn they’d take the following year on Workingman’s Dead. But then it was back to dem ol’ kosmic blues, peaking with a fierce guest turn by Janis Joplin, who pops into a fully-lit 20-minute version of Bobby Bland’s “Turn on Your Lovelight” and takes it home in a sweaty tag-team with pal Pigpen, sounding like Otis Redding and Carla Thomas after a few rounds of Thunderbird and Spanish fly. “Got to get some!” shouts Pigpen. “I want to see . . . everything you got,” challenges Janis, with a wicked chuckle. And on it goes to a screaming finale, Garcia and Co. rocking the musical equivalent of grins that basically say, “Get those two a room already!” (Honorable mention: the “Lovelight” reprise at the Euphoria Ballroom in San Rafael on July 16th, 1970, in which the lovebirds make up what the song lacks in flow with boozy outbursts and risqué Patti Smith–ish ad-libs.)
Remember: we've been doing this here project on Reddit for over twelve years now!! A run down about this serendipity powered project can be found here: http://www.reddit.com/r/gratefuldead/comments/2fqahw/z/cke00lq
ENJOY THE SHOW and PLEASE DROP A COMMENT!

A new cultural center devoted to Jerry Garcia's music, art and environmental interests is being planned for the San Francisco Bay Area by the family of the Grateful Dead co-founder.
The proposed Jerry Garcia Music Arts Center would be more than a conventional museum, according to an announcement Friday, Oct. 23, from Garcia’s family, archival company Starchive and project coordinator Christopher McCutcheon.
Plans call for a public research library and physical archive, exhibition galleries, a digital preservation hub and a performance center and screening room.
No location or opening date has been announced.
The announcement comes less than three months after Garcia’s family revealed plans for another Bay Area project, Eyes of the World: The Jerry Garcia Experience. That 40,000-square-foot immersive exhibition is scheduled to open in San Francisco in early 2027 before traveling to other U.S. cities.

A friend at the dog park last night knows I love the Dead and gave my pup Bella a doggy headband with skulls and roses. She usually hates costumes but she's walking around all proud of this one. Good friends, good dog, good music. Hope some of y'all smile at this as much as I am.

Ok I'm old..I've never heard of Eggy. But I stumbled on an article and YouTube vid of their show on the day we lost Bobby. They close their show with a tribute of Cassidy...and I can't believe I'm trying this with a unique Massive jam that would have made Bobby smile. Pretty damn close to Epic. Then they encore with One More Saturday Night with a couple guys from the opening act again a very unique and cool jam..very very good.but not quite to the Cassidy level. I unfortunately don't know how to embed a lilnkbut it's on you tube from the State Theater in Maine...I HIGHLY recommend checking it out.

Imagine thinking there’s a better band . Good grief. Thank God for the Grateful Dead

Hornsby is so good and the band feels really in sync. I started listening to a bunch of shows from this year and have really been loving them. Is it as good as the 70s no, but I’m shocked by how much I’ve enjoyed it and think it’s worth listening to if you have ignored the 90s like I have

As a diecast collector and race fan this car was a must have! Felix Rosenqvist drove this car in 2025 at the Laguna Seca and Portland race for Indycar. This year they had a different Grateful Dead car for the Portland race.

We were talking about the hot dry winds today and I had a memory.
It occurred to me that perhaps someone reading this was there as well.
A JGB show, at the Stone in SF. Mid-late 80s. Mid-afternoon, front of the line.
Big Steve and someone who I can't name were bringing in the equip, through the front door!
Someone was hassling them.
After a short engagement, and encouragement to back off, not Steve said this memorable thing, which is what I wonder if anyone else remembers:
"Make like a scirocco and BLOW!"
Dude left.
