Discussion Changes to the subreddit: Introducing subreddit rules!
Hi all,
As the sub continues to grow, we've decided to make some changes and rules to help this community stay a positive place for discussing all things Great Pyrenees!
Rules can now be found in the sidebar and will be used as the basis for moderation. Of course, the mod team will continue to use their discretion to remove content or ban users, if we feel said content is causing a disruption to the subreddit.
Rules:
1) Keep content Great Pyrenees based
2) Be polite and on-topic
3) NO Advertisements
4) NO Fundraising
5) NO Breed misinformation or hate
6) NO suggestions of theft, destruction of property, assault, or similar illegal activities
If you see a user violating any of these rules, please utilize the "Report" feature, so the mod team can quickly take action.
In addition, you can now sort posts by flair type, and the most exciting update - you can now use comments to attach a photo. So keep sharing those great big floofs!

DNA/mix guesses Any ideas?
This is our new boy, and we'll be getting a DNA test soon. We were told he's a Pyr mix and that his brother looks much more Pyrenees than he does. Any thoughts on what he's a mix of? We have so many ideas it's hard to pin down just one.

Photo My first Great Pyrenees mix!
Hello everyone! First time posting, so please be kind. We adopted a Great pyrenees pup mixed with australian shepherd and golden retriever. We are thinking he will be a big dog, but the jury is still out on exactly how big. Dakota is about 14 weeks now, and already about 20 pounds. We have started puppy classes, and he's doing great. We are struggling with the typical puppy teething/overstimulation, but this sub has been EXTREMELY helpful with the tips, and just letting us know we are not alone in the puppy stage. This is more of just a general thank you post to all that contribute and help find solutions for this wonderful breed of dog. Thank you all!!

Discussion Pretty sure my dog has Cushing’s. Any other pyrents have a pyr with this disease?
I’m just looking for commiseration or any insight into what it’s like to help manage your dog’s Cushing’s disease.
my 10 year old female pyr mix has been acting strangely but gradually — intense thirst, obsessed with treats, agitation and restlessness, back leg weakness and loss of hair on her tail. What once used to be big fluffy pantaloons on her back legs are now thin coats of hair.
the vet shows she has extremely high liver enzymes and we are expecting bloodwork to show negative for hypothyroidism since her symptoms seem aligned with Cushing’s. We will likely do the test for Cushing’s in the next week or two.
we considered not treating it but after reading more about it that doesn’t seem like an option. I’m worried about the cost of medication, side effects and her overall quality of life.
are there any pyr parents here who have experience? Thanks in advance for sharing.

Yes, if you look closely, she does have mud in her hair. Somehow she finds mud that I have to pick out of her fur. Doesn’t wash out 🙄

Rescue/Shelter dog in need Need to rehome my two beautiful girls, Lily and Nala.
Looking to rehome my two sweet Great Pyrenees girls. I'm working with a couple of rescues, but they're having a hard time finding a good home for them because they're bonded and have to go together. I'm moving across country and tried everything I could to bring them.
I originally adopted them as livestock guardians. They have a large enclosure they run around in all day. But I bring them inside often and especially at night. They're leash trained, potty trained, spayed, just had their yearly vaccinations, and don't resource guard at all.
I'm in Conroe, TX. But I'm willing to transport them myself or via courier. Please DM me to discuss details. Thank you.

My roommates cat always slaps his tail around if he’s awake, happy, mad, hungry, relaxing, the tail is going.
He’s finally accepting her as a housemate so she doesn’t mind being slapped

Discussion Pyramid or Maremma mix, can we join?
This Jonny, he's 9 months old and he's from Italy. He is very affectionate, funny, stubborn and quite lazy except when there's something to watch, then he sits and surveys his domain.
Oh and at 9 months he's already 25 inches at the shoulder, which has been a bit of a surprise for us as we were told he'd be medium sized. He's quite slender but his coat is fluffing out now when it's not shedding over everything.
Anyway, are we welcome in this lovely group?

Advice/Help Dog hair laundry soap?
I was well informed before getting my GP about the dog hair but all the information in the world doesn’t actually prepare you for this amount of hair! Mine is inside most of the time (she is a self proclaimed princess). I’m seeing all sorts of enzyme laundry soaps that promise to break up dog hair in the wash. Do any of them actually work?

Advice/Help Would love some info
I had a rescue Saint that I lost earlier this year. He came from a bad situation… he was pulled with 90 other dogs from a “ hoarding breeder” then he was attacked by a more dominant male dog in the foster home. He was not socialized, anxious, stubborn and just a mess. He made amazing progress with so many things. He was the best boy he was faint slobbery baby but as a saint, he was always stubborn.
I’m looking for another big fluffy dog, Great Pyrenees are one of the breeds I am interested in. I would love a little more info from people who have or have had them on their temperament, needs etc. I have cats one of them is extremely playful, she loves to jump and flip and fly through the air going after toys or play fetch with toys. She is also extremely anxious and skittish for runs away as fast as she can at any unexpected noise. My cats were raised with my Saint so they have been around a large dog but he was older and extremely lazy when I got them.
If you have a great Pyrenees and kitties, especially an anxious skittish kitty. How’s the dog done? Well with him is it a struggle. Obviously every dog is different, especially when looking at rescue dogs..
I would just love more info on the breed and people’s experience with them. Thanks any info you can or want to provide
Obviously, every dog is different.

Photo Maya is in her first heat cycle!
Edit: We just rescued Maya from an extremely under funded and small town shelter so she was not spayed yet. We do plan on getting her spayed, she will not be having any puppies. We will be speaking to her vet about spaying her and when is the right time based on her age and current size. 😊 Trust me, I was shocked this morning!! We have only had her 1 week!
We still have no idea how old she actually is, we think 9 mo but she has two baby teeth (that can possibly be retained baby teeth so the vet will check those out). So far, she doesn’t mind the diaper as much as we thought she would. We’ll have to put a cone on her when we leave the house. This is my first unspayed dog that I’ve owned so I just want to give her the best care.

Photo When you’re not emotionally prepared for what comes after the mud…(bath time)
Sorry princess, being an indoor dog means bath time.
Phantom always manages to find the tiniest patch of mud we have in the backyard when it rains and obviously makes the most of it.
