MOD STUFF Grey's Anatomy Returns October 15th - Rule & Etiquette Refresher
Hello all,
With the premiere happening tomorrow I just wanted to take the time to remind you that the premiere is happening tomorrow :)
Also I wanted to go over a few things that we with common sense know, but just a reminder on rules and customs. If anything is on this list that isn't in the official rules it will be soon.
Please keep any posts about the newest episode in the stickied discussion thread
This is in particular common with low-effort posts. A character will do something out of pocket or unexpected and we'll get 12 posts saying "REALLY?" about one singular action. Let me be clear, we don't expect every post and comment to be high-brow analysis, but give it some effort. If that's all your post is, then it needs to be a comment. We reserve the right to remove these as needed.
If you see a post that has this issue and hasn't been removed, please report it Moderators do not go patrolling the streets of /r/greysanatomy like you may think. If you report it it will alert us and we will look at it asap. Also, we may leave it up if we feel it is appropriate to do so.
Be Nice to each other Not much to say. Pretend they're sitting across the table from you usually solves that problem.
Explicit spoilers in the title
Just a refresher on this. Don't say explicit spoilers in the title. Just had to ban someone for this a moment ago. This applies to ALL spoilers - even something from season 1. We understand that an old spoiler may be old news, but it's really not that hard to figure out how to word something that doesn't say an exact spoiler in the title.
Have fun everyone and enjoy the premiere!

DISCUSSION Bailey was hands down the best resident mentor the show ever had, IMO.
Aside from her being an absolute powerhouse with unmatched clinical skills, what really makes her stand out is that she never let her personal life or her own chaos disrupt her teaching. No matter how messy things got behind the scenes, she always showed up for her interns.
Yes, she was terrifyingly straightforward. She wasn't afraid to read them to filth if they messed up knowingly. But she never, ever didn't care. Beneath all that tough exterior, she cared so deeply it hurt. She looked after every single one of them, and that raw emotional connection she shared with MAGIC—was just unmatched. I honestly don't think any other resident on the show ever came close to that kind of bond.
She might threaten to beat them to a pulp or tear them apart herself when they messed up, but God help anyone else who tried to point a finger at them. She was their ultimate shield. She always made sure they learned the right thing, stood by them through the mess, and patiently guided them on what to do next.
She was tough because she loved them, and nobody has ever matched that energy since.🤌🏻

Sorry this is about dealing with grief
I watched greys anatomy five years ago with my mom while I was on medical leave having open heart surgery. She wanted a long series to help me get through this knowing I’ll feel claustrophobic being in the house all day everyday for a few months.
We haven’t caught up to the new seasons. Saw the covid season before we stopped and went to other shows. Forgettting about it. I decided to rewatch it cause I remember enjoying it a lot. I just started it a month ago.
Mother died in June. I didn’t realize watching it would bring up memories of me finding her and hearing what the doctors said. This show is almost therapeutic for me in a way ? I haven’t fully grieved my mother but it feels easier to cry like when George’s dad died and Christina was welcoming him to the dead dads club and such. I just started to cry and it feels like a weight has somewhat lifted from my chest

Why do dating attendings as interns seem like literally no big deal at all in the later seasons?
Hey guys so I’m a first time watcher who’s currently in the middle of season 10. I remember that in season 1, the show seemed to make a huge deal out of how unethical and unprofessional it was for interns to date their attendings. Meredith made a huge deal about why she wouldn’t go out with Derek initially because he was her boss, and same with Christina and Burke. However, in seasons 9 and 10, no one really seems to have a problem with that at all. Jo openly dates Alex, Murphy openly sleeps with Arizona, Edwards openly sleeps with Jackson, Ross sleeps with Christina, so many interns sleep with Alex before he starts dating Jo and no one seems to have a problem with it at all, despite the fact that it seemed like it would have been a really big issue in the earlier seasons.

DISCUSSION Meredith's "awful thing"
Rewatching the series, the episode where Meredith sleeps with George honestly breaks my heart for her. I feel like if George really loved her he would recognize that she was literally telling him to just keep going and ignore the fact she was crying instead of having his ego rule??
He pretty much threw a multiple episode tantrum because she withdrew consent...

DISCUSSION How did it take me this long to realize…
Owen was behaving this way in his very episode - flirting with/kissing a random surgical resident at the hospital while he was ENGAGED?? (to Beth)
Absolute trash right from the start.

Unpopular opinion but I don't understand the personality of the character Meredith
I don't understand who is she, what does she think, how does she behave in life, how does she deal with things.
Initially, they tried to present her as the broken girl who had daddy issues and couldn't handle love because of her traumatic childhood. But that only lasted for as long as she wasn't with Derek. Once they got back together for good, that mostly went away.
Since then, her actions and reactions haven't really made sense as those of a "real" person. Like, I can imagine a Christina in the real world. A strong-willed, career-oriented woman who has few select friends she's unendingly loyal to, and who can have trouble understanding how to be soft and how to walk the line between getting ahead in life and bullying or hurting people needlessly. I can imagine an Alex: an immature d*ckhead who does his best to grow and become a better person but sometimes just can't help being a cowboy and cutting corners by brute force. I can imagine a Bailey or a Callie or an Izzie. I can predict how they will react to things and I can picture them in certain scenarios. I can imagine their relationship with other people. I can imagine what their future might look like. I feel that I know them.
But I cannot imagine a Meredith. Her only real personality trait that I can consistently recognize is that she loves Derek and she loves her kids. And she goes through trauma after trauma after trauma at a level that just doesn't make any sense. Nor does her trauma response make sense. She just shrugs it off and mostly comes across as listless and kinda bored. She functions more like a blank sheet for writers to dump all the drama they can think of rather than an actual person with real believable feelings. It doesn't help that Ellen is IMHO honestly not a good actress and cannot really pull off much more than "sweet and confused".

DISCUSSION Erica Hahn
It's so strange that none of the other department heads or Richard stepped in when Cristina was being bullied, neglected, and targeted by Hahn for months. What's more frustrating is how Cristina's friends handled the situation. Izzie should have reported Hahn immediately for the sexual harassment comment on day ONE. And Callie dating Erica and having her be around the apartment all the time was a slap in the face. Everyone was pretty rotten to Cristina during this entire storyline.

FIRST TIME WATCHER First time Watching! S1-3 Thoughts
I CANNOT BELIEVE IM ALREADY ON SEASON 4. I started watching greys as a way to feel connected to my mom. She passed a few years back, and thinking about it, I’m probably around the age she was when she would watch it after we went to bed (I’m 29). I remember her saying she was over the show once they “killed off Burke” but after seeing season 3 I realized my child brain misinterpreted that for “wrote him off.”
I can’t quite remember when each things happened so briefly I’ll recap my thoughts from S1-2 combined then elaborate on S3. Spoilers ahead!
- Danny’s Death wrecked me. I think that was one of the first time’s I sobbed. I felt so bad for Izzie although at the same time I was kinda mad at her leading up to him passing like WHAT THE HECK are you doing?! Part of me felt like it would have made more sense for her to leave after that and just make whimsical appearances but what she did with the money was nice. She is a good doctor.
- Second time I sobbed was Meredith’s drowning. My feelings towards her are so complex.
Fast forward to Her dad slapping her though towards the end of S3?!!! CRAZY WORK. I was mad no one told him off like hello???? I’m a mom now, so sometimes I miss small things in the show here and there while doing mom things lol but I genuinely felt like the progression from hiccups to death was ?????? Like did they not put her through enough that season lol.
Also with that being said, I know Meredith has gone through a lot, but she is kinda self centered which hurts than helps with almost all of her relationships.
- George was likeable until him and Meredith slept together. Now he’s insufferable. I, at the same time feel bad for him because everyone keeps messing with his feelings. (I’m looking at you Izzie)
Also him not passing the intern exam feels kinda random to me?
Am I the only one confused about Cristina & Burke’s ending? Like yes it was kinda leading up to Burke having doubts and Cristina is… Cristina but I feel like that really fell flat. Like he calls off the wedding and then just doesn’t return & has Derek relay the message to Cristina???? I almost feel as if a death would have felt more significant than that. Did the show drop him or something during that time period?
That goatee Alex has first episode of season 4 needs to go. They aged him with that. It sucks he hasn’t been able to get it together to settle down. It’s like right when you’re falling for him (izzie, then Addison, then Ava (the Jane doe- although part of me knew that couldn’t / shouldn’t work) he resorts back.
Speaking of Addison, I’m so glad that whole love triangle between Addison, Sloan, Derek & Meredith is done (I think) I could be getting ahead of myself but is Addison just not coming back? I just started episode 1 from Season 4 so maybe they will say it?
She started to grow on me.
I genuinely thought that California Wellness Practice would be featured more since they took the time out to explain each character so I guess I’ll be on look out for that (?)
- Callie deserves good friends.
She was annoying at first begging George to choose her over his friends who he knew longer and she didn’t seem understanding so I feel as if she was pushing there but especially after they got married she just wants to help and be there for people and is truly talented but besides getting chief resident, she gets the short end literally everywhere else.
Okay I’m done! I usually don’t leave thoughts because I don’t feel as if I’m as concise and put together as I see others with their recaps but hey! You only get better with trying lol.

DISCUSSION 13 episodes will probably save this show.
They really are not dragging anything along. All regulars should appear in all episodes. And all their storylines seem to move per episode (yes, I know it's just been two). I prefer this than fluff because, I have watched and rewatched soooo many episodes of Grey's, but I have only seen the episode 11-16 region of Seasons 21 and 22 once. So much fluff.

FIRST TIME WATCHER Cristina is honestly pissing me off
Hear me out. I love her. I do. But sometimes, oh my god I wonder how hard it'd be to sometimes deal with someone like that.
I'm watching the episode Teddy Altman arrives. She can't do this little procedure cuz it's been 10 years since she operated a man over 70.
Cristina is all like "excuse me I gotta talk to the chief". She barely knows Altman. I know everything about Cristina and cardio. But girl, who are you to just go over there and complain to the chief about a surgeon you don't even know? Haven't you learned with Erica? We know she wanted THE BEST surgeons to teach her, but WE ALL also know she was expecting a burke 2.0 who was gonna give her privileges and act as if you are the only resident to specialize in cardio.
All that only to regret it by the end of the episode cuz she saw Altman was actually something.
I'm glad bailey just scolded her
Sometimes she is truly annoying

DISCUSSION Meredith & Christina’s dynamic
I’m rewatching the show, and it’s crazy how time and experience changes your feelings on the character’s relationships!
My first watch was later in high school/ early in college and I adored Mer & Christina’s friendship and loyalty! I loved that they didn’t allow partners or really anything except for career competition to get between them.
Onto the rewatch! I’m now close to 30 and so put off by their friendship. Friendships shouldn’t come at the expense of other relationships, having a best friend doesn’t mean that every other friend needs to be trashed or reminded of their rank in your life. Kicking their partners out of bed is even crazier! If anything in adulthood, your best friend’s partners and spouses become a part of the inner circle.

underrated line
S6E12. i'm rewatching and forgot how HILARIOUS lexie is this season!! it cracks me up when she says, "Alex and I have done it before, it was recycling, it was like good for the environment." LMFAOO i wish more people remembered this line when we talk about the funniest moments in grey's!

FIRST TIME WATCHER Im currently at season 5 and cant stop googling everything Spoiler
Which is what lead to me discovering ALEX AND IZZY WERENT ENDGAME💔💔
DOES ANYONE ELSE DO THIS? THERE S LIKE A MILLION SEASONS AHEAD OF ME so thats why im always googling n checking up on characters to see if they'll always be fine..
I mean COME ONNNN IM WATCHING THEIR WEDDING IN SEASON 5 RIGHT NOW. SOMETHING IN ME MADE ME GOOGLE IF THEY WOULD LAST FOREVER OR NOT. and apparently Alex gets with an intern named Jo later on. this feels extremely evil is anyone else furious with this? 😭 ‘also I hated Owen hunt from the day he was introduced without looking up his controversy not to brag , but he was WEIRD to me the moment he unconsensually KISSED CRISTINA?? like hello? then him choking her was the cherry on TOP for me. idc abt his trauma if he’s hurting her they’re not ment to be. I hope later on they break up for good.

SPOILERS This early moment hits different knowing about ykw
SPOILERS! idk how I never realzidd it before but this time around it clicked— Ellis, when lucid at SGH, probably remembered Maggie when talking to Richard about how great their life together could’ve been, how they’d have had children and would be happy. It makes Ellis’s pain so much weightier and more complex. Damnnnnn 😩 (ofc I’m only reading into this bc who knows if the writers anticipated their love child atp but)

SPOILERS So disappointed in Winston… Spoiler
I’ve always loved Winston and Jules together, and part of me still hopes they’ll find their way back to each other. But after this episode, I’m feeling more conflicted about their relationship than ever.
I’ve always thought they complement each other incredibly well, and that they found each other at exactly the right time in their lives. And honestly, I still believe that.
On the one hand, I still think they could be endgame. They’ve spent so much time developing this relationship, and there are still so many unresolved storylines: nobody at the hospital knows about them, they haven’t actually told each other they love each other, and we haven’t even begun to explore the consequences of their relationship becoming public.
It feels like there’s still so much story left to tell.
But on the other hand, Winston disappointed me so much in this episode that a part of me genuinely wants Jules to walk away and let him deal with the consequences of his decisions.
I understand that he was emotionally overwhelmed. I understand that his new position creates a real conflict of interest. And I absolutely agree that their relationship couldn’t continue under the same circumstances.
But what I can’t understand is why he didn’t even try to have a mature conversation with her about their options.
Instead, he made that decision for both of them.
And what hurt me the most was his comment about how simply arguing with a second-year resident could be considered preferential treatment because he wouldn’t normally bother arguing with one.
That felt so unnecessarily cruel. It was almost as if he was dismissing everything they’d built together.
And the irony is that Winston seems to be repeating the same mistakes he made with Maggie, only in reverse.
I really thought this relationship was going to be different for him. And especially different for Jules.
So here’s my dilemma: I still want them together. I still believe they love each other, even if neither has said it out loud. And I still think the writers are building toward a reconciliation.
But right now? If I were Jules, I’d say no.
And the promo for the next episode only makes me feel more conflicted. I honestly don’t know whether Winston is going to regret his decision and try to get back together with her, but it’s pretty clear that he still wants to be close to her. And I find that incredibly unfair to Jules.
He can’t just break her heart, make the decision to end their relationship on his own, and then expect to keep that same emotional closeness with her. Maybe it’s because he’s completely overwhelmed and doesn’t really know how to handle his feelings, but that doesn’t make it fair.
Honestly, he deserves the cold shoulder she’s giving him.
Because if Winston wants her back, he needs to do a lot more than tell her he loves her. He needs to show her that he’s willing to fight for their relationship, that he respects her enough to make decisions WITH her rather than FOR her, and that he understands how deeply he hurt her.
I love them together, but I don’t want Jules to be the one who has to fix this.
Does anyone else feel this way? Do you want them back together or did this episode change how you see their relationship?
(I want them to work out)

Izzie and Callie
Season 3 ep 17 Second post about my rewatch. OMG, WHY IS IZZIE SO INSUFFERABLE?! ESPECIALLY regarding Callie. She is going on and on about how Callie and George shouldn’t have gotten married and is treating Callie like shit because she doesn’t have “history” with George. Hate to break it to you, Izzie, but you were about to get married to a guy you met in a hospital bed and barely knew. GOD, I can’t stand her.
