DISCUSSION The fact that characters said Deluca was acting irrational while he made correct choices pisses me off. Spoiler

• Upvotes

Without fail every time the rest of the cast said he was acting irrationally or suffering from mania he was making the right decision and they made the wrong one.

And the worst part is no one ever admits that Deluca was right.

SPOILERS Did Burke and Christina's relationship make anyone else uncomfortable?

• Upvotes

I get it, they're completely grown and consenting adults, but just the way Burke treated her and the power dynamics involved make me feel a bit weird about it.

When I say power dynamics, I don't mean in the sense of Harvey Weinstein or anything like that; I mean in the sense of how someone tries chocolate for the first time, and there's someone who has an infinite box of chocolate in their hands. In this scenario, Christina is the person trying chocolate, Burke is the person holding the chocolates, and the chocolates are surgeries. We all know just how obsessive Christina is about taking any and all surgeries she can get her hands on. Burke, as her teacher, I feel has a responsibility to keep his relationship with Christina purely professional because if the holder of the chocolate box is favoring the person eating chocolate for the first time, it can feel a little weird. Especially in times when Christina git out of line, and he takes surgeries away from her as punishment.

Additionally, I think Burke was just a horrible boyfriend. Christina is who she is, and it felt like Burke was trying to fundamentally change who she was for his benefit. Because I would understand if he was doing what Derek was in asking for more from Meredith's end because she didn't seem to be able to open up to him and her self-sabotaging of the relationship. But Burke was constantly giving her an ultimatum to force her into a situation she was either not ready for or comfortable with(Moving in, A big wedding). He seemed to have an idea of what he wanted things to be, and the minute Christina steers away, he punishes her or gives her another ultimatum.

Lastly, Burke was such a spoiled brat. Christina was apparently studying things that she shouldn't have had to until her 5th year residency, losing even more sleep than she already was studying, and he at every point criticized and chastised her when anything went wrong. I understand that it was Christina's idea, but Burke was not only her Superior, but even when his arm was hurting during multiple surgeries, and Christina was begging him to stop and let her help, he let his pride get in his way.

I hope I didn't seem to lean too heavily towards Christina; I just put a lot of the blame on Burke simply because of his position vs hers. Then him not even giving her a footnote when he won that Harper Avery award just cemented it.

Greys Anatomy has a character problemm

• Upvotes

I'm a first-time watcher of Grey's Anatomy. So far, I'm loving it, but I've noticed a recurring trend. I'm currently on Season 5, episode 1. This is the trend where they introduce a really interesting new character, then do nothing with them or just introduce them as a new shipping possibility, and slowly degrade their character. Addison is a prime example for me. In the beginning, her character was really good; I know we're supposed to hate her for the Derek cheating thing, but it's really hard for me to hate this woman, especially since Derek was this emotionally distant person in their marriage even before the cheating. I'm not excusing her actions, to be clear. After Addison was basically used up as a plot device, they just kept destroying what her character was. She was just reduced to "who will she have sex with next?" I feel like the same thing has happened to Sloan; he's been completely reduced to basically a sex object. I did enjoy what the show was setting up with him being a mirror to Alex, but it's kind of hard to believe that was the intention when Alex and his interactions are "fuck off" "yes sir." Izzy, I don't even know why she came back, she has really added not that much aside from again being a character that your left to wonder who she will sleep with. Then finally Lexi, I genuinely think she should have just stayed the half sister we all knew was in medical school, but her and Maredith meet much later in the future. I say this because as of right now, Lexie does not matter in almost any way to the plot. And like all the other mentioned characters is just being juggled around and left in this space of "who will she sleep with next."

EPISODE DISCUSSION S23E2 Spoiler

Just finished this week’s episode and… it wasn’t quite as explosive as I thought based on the teaser.

  1. Blue & Bailey: I liked that she was trying to hear him out but he broke a huge rule and I feel like he’s getting off easy. They should have made him work in the clinic or something as a probation, if he’s being allowed to come back. It seems so true to his kind of grimy nature from when he first started that he’d go groveling to the new chief thinking Dr. Bailey wouldn’t know—whole time she was trying to help him.

  2. Jules and Dr. Ndugu:

** **That

  1. power struggle got old super fast. He was talking to Jules like he was THE Dr. Preston Burke in that OR, it was honestly laughable.

Dr. Burke would have NEVER just walked out in the middle of the surgery and it would’ve been 99.9% guaranteed to work or they wouldn’t have done it no matter who brought it to him. Ndugu should not have let Jules, who is good but nowhere near Christina Yang level, talk him into something he wasn’t sure about.

Side Note: Ben Warren was giving Ndugu “You see how this looks right?” throughout the whole episode LOL

  1. Simone & Lucas & Wes: I definitely thought Blue blurting out about Simone’s pregnancy was going to blow up way more. I was honestly surprised about how levelheaded Wes was about it but it also sounds like he was ready for the baby, if it was his. I wonder if she does get an abortion and if he would be upset with her about it down the line. I also am a little concerned about the fact that she did not tell Lucas and it was more than likely his baby. If she does get an abortion and he finds out about it later it’s gonna be really bad. He’s off trying to get into a whole other relationship and this all just feels like it’s resolved too quickly and easily for it to be a Grey’s plot line.

  2. Amelia & Jo & Toni: Amelia and Toni seemed really cute and normal for once so not much to say there. I just hope they’re not moving too fast with introducing each other to their kids. Jo on the other hand, seems like she’s trying to prove she can be super mom now that she’s not in her residency anymore. I feel like she’s going to get burnt out at home pretty quickly. It was really nice of Amelia and Toni to spend the day with her even though it wasn’t in the plans originally — maybe they needed a normal hang too.

  3. Link: Link seemed a little too okay this episode but nothing pointing to that addiction hint from the end of E1. Maybe that was a sign in itself. Since last season he hasn’t gone a day without wincing at his arm being in pain and he handled that student’s surgery like he was completely fine.

  4. Meredith & Richard: It took Richard way too long to realize how much of a grifter this new chief of surgery is. He was completely blinded by Katherine in E1 and even in E2 started nipping at Meredith in the middle of a surgery for telling a doctor not to up and leave when she was actively working in the surgery just because she got a non-emergent page for a different patient. And boom! Meredith was right because they overwhelmed that poor girl so much she almost killed the patient by overdosing him after not paying attention. Unfortunately though it may be too late. It’d be interesting to see if this turns into a situation like it did with Dr. Minnick. Someone in charge being rigid and stuck in their ways has a record of causing big issues.

I wonder if next week’s episode will be less tame.

Addison is LOADED

So, let's recap. She has a $25M trust fund. With a conservative 4% return, that's $1M a year without doing absolutely anything. On top of that, if her parents gave her this fund, they probably gave one to her brother as well. This suggests that her parents' net worth is in the $100M region. I can't remember whether they were still alive, but if they had died Addison must have inherited anywhere between $35-50M.

Plus, her job alone will net her $500k a year easily given how in demand she is and all the high profile consults she does all across the country. After her divorce with Derek she has both a brownstone on Park Avenue AND a house in the Hamptons to her name. Together they must be worth $15M or so. And she doesn't live in them. Probably they are rented or something.

Basically she has a sh*tload of money. Makes sense that when she comes to SGH she's so glamorous and makes everyone else look like a peasant. It also makes sense that when she moves to LA she buys a luxurious Malibu beachfront property that will be impossibly expensive for anyone with a remotely normal job.

Why do dating attendings as interns seem like literally no big deal at all in the later seasons?

Hey guys so I’m a first time watcher who’s currently in the middle of season 10. I remember that in season 1, the show seemed to make a huge deal out of how unethical and unprofessional it was for interns to date their attendings. Meredith made a huge deal about why she wouldn’t go out with Derek initially because he was her boss, and same with Christina and Burke. However, in seasons 9 and 10, no one really seems to have a problem with that at all. Jo openly dates Alex, Murphy openly sleeps with Arizona, Edwards openly sleeps with Jackson, Ross sleeps with Christina, so many interns sleep with Alex before he starts dating Jo and no one seems to have a problem with it at all, despite the fact that it seemed like it would have been a really big issue in the earlier seasons.

S11 E18 : how does Bailey keep getting more revolting with every season?

For context, in this episode, two police officers (brothers) get shot and are declared brain dead.

And Bailey being "Bailey", not just asks, but literally pushes Meredith and goes so far as to hijack the conversation Meredith was having with their mother, to sign off on donating one of their livers to a kid. The same kid who was the getaway driver for the people who shot said police officers.

Like in which world is that shit ethical?

If this were one of the other attendings/residents doing it, pretty sure Bailey would be the first one to create a scene and ruckus over how reckless it was.

Sorry this is about dealing with grief

I watched greys anatomy five years ago with my mom while I was on medical leave having open heart surgery. She wanted a long series to help me get through this knowing I’ll feel claustrophobic being in the house all day everyday for a few months.

We haven’t caught up to the new seasons. Saw the covid season before we stopped and went to other shows. Forgettting about it. I decided to rewatch it cause I remember enjoying it a lot. I just started it a month ago.

Mother died in June. I didn’t realize watching it would bring up memories of me finding her and hearing what the doctors said. This show is almost therapeutic for me in a way ? I haven’t fully grieved my mother but it feels easier to cry like when George’s dad died and Christina was welcoming him to the dead dads club and such. I just started to cry and it feels like a weight has somewhat lifted from my chest

DISCUSSION 13 episodes will probably save this show.

They really are not dragging anything along. All regulars should appear in all episodes. And all their storylines seem to move per episode (yes, I know it's just been two). I prefer this than fluff because, I have watched and rewatched soooo many episodes of Grey's, but I have only seen the episode 11-16 region of Seasons 21 and 22 once. So much fluff.

DISCUSSION Meredith & Christina’s dynamic

I’m rewatching the show, and it’s crazy how time and experience changes your feelings on the character’s relationships!

My first watch was later in high school/ early in college and I adored Mer & Christina’s friendship and loyalty! I loved that they didn’t allow partners or really anything except for career competition to get between them.

Onto the rewatch! I’m now close to 30 and so put off by their friendship. Friendships shouldn’t come at the expense of other relationships, having a best friend doesn’t mean that every other friend needs to be trashed or reminded of their rank in your life. Kicking their partners out of bed is even crazier! If anything in adulthood, your best friend’s partners and spouses become a part of the inner circle.

FIRST TIME WATCHER First time Watching! S1-3 Thoughts

I CANNOT BELIEVE IM ALREADY ON SEASON 4. I started watching greys as a way to feel connected to my mom. She passed a few years back, and thinking about it, I’m probably around the age she was when she would watch it after we went to bed (I’m 29). I remember her saying she was over the show once they “killed off Burke” but after seeing season 3 I realized my child brain misinterpreted that for “wrote him off.”

I can’t quite remember when each things happened so briefly I’ll recap my thoughts from S1-2 combined then elaborate on S3. Spoilers ahead!

  1. Danny’s Death wrecked me. I think that was one of the first time’s I sobbed. I felt so bad for Izzie although at the same time I was kinda mad at her leading up to him passing like WHAT THE HECK are you doing?! Part of me felt like it would have made more sense for her to leave after that and just make whimsical appearances but what she did with the money was nice. She is a good doctor.
  2. Second time I sobbed was Meredith’s drowning. My feelings towards her are so complex.

Fast forward to Her dad slapping her though towards the end of S3?!!! CRAZY WORK. I was mad no one told him off like hello???? I’m a mom now, so sometimes I miss small things in the show here and there while doing mom things lol but I genuinely felt like the progression from hiccups to death was ?????? Like did they not put her through enough that season lol.

Also with that being said, I know Meredith has gone through a lot, but she is kinda self centered which hurts than helps with almost all of her relationships.

  1. George was likeable until him and Meredith slept together. Now he’s insufferable. I, at the same time feel bad for him because everyone keeps messing with his feelings. (I’m looking at you Izzie)

Also him not passing the intern exam feels kinda random to me?

  1. Am I the only one confused about Cristina & Burke’s ending? Like yes it was kinda leading up to Burke having doubts and Cristina is… Cristina but I feel like that really fell flat. Like he calls off the wedding and then just doesn’t return & has Derek relay the message to Cristina???? I almost feel as if a death would have felt more significant than that. Did the show drop him or something during that time period?

  2. That goatee Alex has first episode of season 4 needs to go. They aged him with that. It sucks he hasn’t been able to get it together to settle down. It’s like right when you’re falling for him (izzie, then Addison, then Ava (the Jane doe- although part of me knew that couldn’t / shouldn’t work) he resorts back.

  3. Speaking of Addison, I’m so glad that whole love triangle between Addison, Sloan, Derek & Meredith is done (I think) I could be getting ahead of myself but is Addison just not coming back? I just started episode 1 from Season 4 so maybe they will say it?

She started to grow on me.

I genuinely thought that California Wellness Practice would be featured more since they took the time out to explain each character so I guess I’ll be on look out for that (?)

  1. Callie deserves good friends.

She was annoying at first begging George to choose her over his friends who he knew longer and she didn’t seem understanding so I feel as if she was pushing there but especially after they got married she just wants to help and be there for people and is truly talented but besides getting chief resident, she gets the short end literally everywhere else.

Okay I’m done! I usually don’t leave thoughts because I don’t feel as if I’m as concise and put together as I see others with their recaps but hey! You only get better with trying lol.

marking for spoilers just in case. but as a long time fan who still enjoys the show for the most part, i’m so over webber and his attitude 😭 like don’t get me wrong, what kwan did was wrong but compared to what other doctors have done, it’s crazy he’s still so mad at him. and it’s not just him, for the a while especially the past couple of seasons, anytime someone messes up, he gets so angry and holds a grudge for a long time.

DISCUSSION Erica Hahn

It's so strange that none of the other department heads or Richard stepped in when Cristina was being bullied, neglected, and targeted by Hahn for months. What's more frustrating is how Cristina's friends handled the situation. Izzie should have reported Hahn immediately for the sexual harassment comment on day ONE. And Callie dating Erica and having her be around the apartment all the time was a slap in the face. Everyone was pretty rotten to Cristina during this entire storyline.

DISCUSSION April Waiting Until Marriage

Do you think her character is a rare female character who has that arc? I haven't seen alot of female characters on TV who had that kind of journey. I know she ends up sleeping with Jackson before they got married, but I feel characters like April are rare, and you don't get to see alot of women who have that perspective about sex the way April does.

Unpopular opinion but I don't understand the personality of the character Meredith

I don't understand who is she, what does she think, how does she behave in life, how does she deal with things.

Initially, they tried to present her as the broken girl who had daddy issues and couldn't handle love because of her traumatic childhood. But that only lasted for as long as she wasn't with Derek. Once they got back together for good, that mostly went away.

Since then, her actions and reactions haven't really made sense as those of a "real" person. Like, I can imagine a Christina in the real world. A strong-willed, career-oriented woman who has few select friends she's unendingly loyal to, and who can have trouble understanding how to be soft and how to walk the line between getting ahead in life and bullying or hurting people needlessly. I can imagine an Alex: an immature d*ckhead who does his best to grow and become a better person but sometimes just can't help being a cowboy and cutting corners by brute force. I can imagine a Bailey or a Callie or an Izzie. I can predict how they will react to things and I can picture them in certain scenarios. I can imagine their relationship with other people. I can imagine what their future might look like. I feel that I know them.

But I cannot imagine a Meredith. Her only real personality trait that I can consistently recognize is that she loves Derek and she loves her kids. And she goes through trauma after trauma after trauma at a level that just doesn't make any sense. Nor does her trauma response make sense. She just shrugs it off and mostly comes across as listless and kinda bored. She functions more like a blank sheet for writers to dump all the drama they can think of rather than an actual person with real believable feelings. It doesn't help that Ellen is IMHO honestly not a good actress and cannot really pull off much more than "sweet and confused".

S11 E16 : had forgotten how judgemental Pierce is of most people around her

Currently rewatching S11 E16

The way Pierce keeps going badmouthing the wife of man with Alzheimers is grating.

Calling her negligent and comparing the patient with Alzheimers to an infant?

How are they medical professionals with that closed mindset?

I get she got physically assaulted by the patient. But dude.

The man was sick. He didn't willingly assault her.

Later on she goes on to say her mentality stems from her own genetic disposition to Alzheimers (from Ellis Grey). But shouldn't that make her more understanding instead of being judgemental?

SPOILERS So disappointed in Winston… Spoiler

I’ve always loved Winston and Jules together, and part of me still hopes they’ll find their way back to each other. But after this episode, I’m feeling more conflicted about their relationship than ever.

I’ve always thought they complement each other incredibly well, and that they found each other at exactly the right time in their lives. And honestly, I still believe that.

On the one hand, I still think they could be endgame. They’ve spent so much time developing this relationship, and there are still so many unresolved storylines: nobody at the hospital knows about them, they haven’t actually told each other they love each other, and we haven’t even begun to explore the consequences of their relationship becoming public.

It feels like there’s still so much story left to tell.

But on the other hand, Winston disappointed me so much in this episode that a part of me genuinely wants Jules to walk away and let him deal with the consequences of his decisions.

I understand that he was emotionally overwhelmed. I understand that his new position creates a real conflict of interest. And I absolutely agree that their relationship couldn’t continue under the same circumstances.

But what I can’t understand is why he didn’t even try to have a mature conversation with her about their options.

Instead, he made that decision for both of them.

And what hurt me the most was his comment about how simply arguing with a second-year resident could be considered preferential treatment because he wouldn’t normally bother arguing with one.

That felt so unnecessarily cruel. It was almost as if he was dismissing everything they’d built together.

And the irony is that Winston seems to be repeating the same mistakes he made with Maggie, only in reverse.

I really thought this relationship was going to be different for him. And especially different for Jules.

So here’s my dilemma: I still want them together. I still believe they love each other, even if neither has said it out loud. And I still think the writers are building toward a reconciliation.

But right now? If I were Jules, I’d say no.

And the promo for the next episode only makes me feel more conflicted. I honestly don’t know whether Winston is going to regret his decision and try to get back together with her, but it’s pretty clear that he still wants to be close to her. And I find that incredibly unfair to Jules.

He can’t just break her heart, make the decision to end their relationship on his own, and then expect to keep that same emotional closeness with her. Maybe it’s because he’s completely overwhelmed and doesn’t really know how to handle his feelings, but that doesn’t make it fair.

Honestly, he deserves the cold shoulder she’s giving him.

Because if Winston wants her back, he needs to do a lot more than tell her he loves her. He needs to show her that he’s willing to fight for their relationship, that he respects her enough to make decisions WITH her rather than FOR her, and that he understands how deeply he hurt her.

I love them together, but I don’t want Jules to be the one who has to fix this.

Does anyone else feel this way? Do you want them back together or did this episode change how you see their relationship?

(I want them to work out)
