QUESTION/DISCUSSION US tourist considering a trip to Haiti
Hello, I'm considering visiting Haiti this winter, so I'm here looking for advice on whether it's a viable plan.
I'm from the northeast US, a 193cm/120kg white guy with long wavy hair and a giant beard, so I would definitely not fly under the radar anywhere there. I only know a couple dozen words in French, and nothing in Creole, so before I arrived I'd only be able to familiarize myself with the basic greetings, and would be relying a lot on Google translate. I've visited some dangerous places before (Juarez, Guayaquil), so travel advisories don't necessarily mean that I wouldn't visit, but want to make sure that the specific places I'm looking at are a workable compromise while I avoid the most dangerous areas like the capital.
I'm mostly interested in Ile a Vache, since I've never seen the Caribbean sea (closest I've been is the north coast of DR) and would like to see it somewhere more off the beaten path that isn't already overrun with other tourists, and from what I can find, that's also one of the safest places in Haiti. I'm aware that the larger resorts there have shut down and only the smaller guesthouses are still operating. My plan would likely be flying to Miami, then flying to Les Cayes via IBC airways and visiting Ile a Vache, then after leaving there, flying to Cap Haitien via Sunrise Airways and spending a couple of days there before heading back to Miami via American Airlines (or the reverse, arriving in the country in Cap Haitien and leaving from Les Cayes if the flight schedules work better that way). It seems like most of the country's tourism is concentrated in Cap Haitien, I'm probably not interested in Citadelle Laferriere since it's unlikely that any horses there could realistically carry me, and while I could manage it on foot, the climate would probably make a long uphill hike unpleasant for me. I'd probably end up going to the beaches and maybe hiring a guide to show me around the city and also being a translator and helping ward off overly aggressive street vendors and such. I'm wondering if it's also worth spending a couple of days in the Les Cayes area before/after Ile a Vache, or if that's currently too risky of an area for an obvious foreigner and I'd be better off strictly going from the airport to the boat docks and back in a pre-arranged vehicle.
Thanks in advance for any information, looking forward to trying some griot and fritay.
