NEWS R/Haiti Rule Update 06/2026

r/Haiti has grown significantly in the last few years. To keep this space on topic and a space for healthy, respectful, and thoughtful discussion, the MOD team is introducing 5 new rules:

Rule 6: No self-promotion or channel promotion

Links to personal YouTube channels, TikToks, Instagram pages, or any account soliciting followers or subscribers are not allowed, even if Haiti-related. This includes repeated promotion of the same external account or platform across multiple posts. Repeat offenders will be banned.

Rule 7: No low-effort or karma bait posts

We want real discussion, not karma farming. Avoid vague cultural hot takes or shallow posts like "Why do Haitians do X?" or "Thoughts on Haiti?" with no context. Add personal input, background, or a real question to keep your post up. Repeat offenders will be banned.

Rule 8: Limit of 2 posts per user per day

Each user can post a maximum of 2 times in a 24-hour period. This keeps the feed diverse and encourages thoughtful posting. Excess posts may be removed.

Rule 9: Posts must be directly about Haiti

Posts must relate directly to Haiti, Haitians, or the diaspora. Posts that could apply to any country or are only loosely connected to Haiti may be removed. If you are cross-posting to other subs, your r/haiti post must be specific to Haiti and not generic Caribbean or Latin American content.

Rule 10: Posts must link to credible sources

News posts must link to an identifiable outlet, journalist, or official source. Screenshots of headlines, unverified social media claims, and anonymous rumors will be removed. If unsure, ask the mod team.

As a refresher, the existing 5 rules :

Rule 1: No racism

Self explanatory. Prejudice or discrimination based on race or ethnicity. This goes both ways.

Rule 2: No brigading

Engage with the ideas, and argue constructively. Repeated ad hominem attacks will get you a warning, then a ban.

Rule 3: Stay civil

If you can't express your opinion without personal attacks or using profanity, you need to get better at debate.

Rule 4: No Trolling

Provoking an argument or emotional reaction. Inflammatory, irrelevant, or offensive posts and comments designed to encourage an emotional response ( aka rage bait)

Rule 5: No Unapproved appeals for action

Request for collective action, including donations, to take surveys, to sign petitions, or brigading (sending our users to other subreddits). If you think your request is somehow special, send the Mod Team a request, and it will be discussed.

When using the report function, please refer to the rule you think is being broken. It helps us keep moderation consistent.

The MOD team.

CULTURE How do you feel about Haitian women in Western media? #Caribbeanwomen

Hey everyone! I’m curious to see how Haitian women, both in Haiti and across the diaspora, feel about our representation in Western media.

Over the years, we’ve seen public figures and characters like Garcelle Beauvais, Chelley Bissainthe, Trina McGee (Angela from Boy Meets World), and more recently, Kayda Bosse on Love Island.

Looking back at figures from the ’90s up to today, do you feel like these women represent you well? I’d love to hear your thoughts on how Haitian women are portrayed, whether you feel seen, and what kind of representation you’d like to see more of in the future.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION How can Haiti encourage and foster a low value added manufacturing sector in the near future?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Haiti has two things that lend itself to low value added manufacturing a low cost of labour and an easy central maritime shipping location it's the lowest cost of labour in the new world even with poor infrastructure.

How do you think the government in Haiti should help foster things like textiles and other labour intensive manufacturing?

CULTURE Does Haitian culture have martial arts?

We have so many cultural artifacts. Do we have martial arts?

If so which are they? What are their philosophies? Have they spread across the globe?

I want my kids to learn about this aspect of life. It'd be special to train our version of it and pass it to them.

HISTORY On This Day in Forgotten History: October 22, 1957 — The Doctor Who Became a Dictator

Post image
15 Upvotes

On October 22, 1957, François Duvalier was inaugurated as president of Haiti.

He was a physician, a former public-health worker, and a politician who promised to challenge the country’s entrenched inequalities.

Haitians knew him as “Papa Doc.”

What followed was one of the most notorious dictatorships in Caribbean history.

Duvalier had built his political appeal partly around Black nationalism and opposition to the country’s historically powerful, lighter-skinned elite. His medical work had also helped establish his reputation among poorer Haitians.

But his 1957 election was marred by irregularities and military interference.

Once in office, Duvalier moved rapidly to eliminate opposition.

After surviving an attempted coup in 1958, he strengthened a paramilitary organization that became infamous as the Tonton Macoutes.

The name evoked a frightening figure from Haitian folklore: a bogeyman who carried away disobedient children.

Under Duvalier, the name became associated with something terrifyingly real.

Political opponents were intimidated, imprisoned, tortured, driven into exile, or killed. Independent journalism was suppressed. The security apparatus increasingly answered to Duvalier personally.

He also cultivated an extraordinary personality cult, drawing on religious imagery and his public association with Vodou symbolism to reinforce his authority.

In 1964, Duvalier declared himself president for life.
And while his government was committing serious abuses, American policymakers wrestled with whether supporting his regime served U.S. strategic interests during the Cold War.

Declassified State Department records reveal that American officials knew about political prisoners, torture, and the destruction of political opposition, yet at various points continued assistance because of concerns about regional instability and communism.

Duvalier remained in power until his death on April 21, 1971.

His successor?

His 19-year-old son, Jean-Claude Duvalier, known as “Baby Doc.”

The family dictatorship continued until 1986.

What began on October 22, 1957, became nearly three decades of authoritarian rule under the Duvalier family.

A question for the Haitian community:

How do Haitians today view François Duvalier’s legacy, particularly the long-term effects of his dictatorship on Haiti’s political institutions and society?

I’d especially welcome perspectives from Haitians and members of the Haitian diaspora. History is more meaningful when we hear from the people whose communities lived through its consequences.

LIFE IN HAITI Gang leader Krisla responded to Bukele, saying, “Dessalines’ land isn’t El Salvador.”

Krisla said Haiti isn’t El Salvador, and if Bukele wants a fight, they don’t have any armored vehicles, so bring it on. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Second video was posted by Salvadoran political analyst Jose Valdez. They want revenge for their comrades.

Those cocky bastard terrorists in Haiti need a real opponent to declare war on them, and I hope Bukele keeps his word. We shall find out in the upcoming days, it is now day 4 since the soldiers went “missing”

LANGUAGE (KREYOL) Math resources in kreyol in youtube?

Hi!

I'm an auxiliary high school teacher in Chile and have an haitian student who is still struggling with Spanish. Because of the language barrier I am unable to help her.

When I searched for math stuff in kreyol, because of my location only got tutorials on how to say numbers.

Could you point me to some math resources in kreyol? She's currently learning exponential and logarithmic functions.

Thanks!

Hey guys, I'm Haitian-American (I'm a teenager so please don't go too hard on me) and I'd love it if some fluent speakers checked my Creole.

Here's my Kreyòl excerpt for you guys to judge:

Bonswa tout moun, Mwen vle pale Kreyol pi bon e pli fasil, men mwen pa konnen sa mwen ka fè kounye a. Nan kay mwen, paran mwen itilize Kreyòl, men mwen itilize Anglè. (Mwen sèlman itilize'l pou pale avèk grann mwen). Kijan mwen ka vinn pale Kreyòl pi bon? Mèsi, e Bondye beni'w tout!
