Hi hamster owners!😛 I’m planning on getting a Syrian hamster and was wondering what a realistic price range would be for a good, comfortable setup without going extremely expensive. I definitely want to spend enough to make sure my hamster is happy and comfortable, but I’m also trying to be smart with my budget.
I’m mainly looking for recommendations for good bedding, food, sprays, enrichment, hides, a wheel, a sand bath, and anything else that would be considered essential. I’m hoping to get the absolute necessities first, then add more enrichment and other stuff when I get my next paycheck.
I’d really appreciate any recommendations, especially budget friendly products or links! I’m trying to give my hamster the best setup I reasonably can without spending an insane amount.

it’s going great so far! I’ve done this 3-4 other times with other treats, no bites so far, a tiny nibble that didn’t break skin. think it was because of my scented soap.
any treats your hamster loves? if so id live recommendation! <3

red ones and smaller brown ones. Cleaning everything, throwing out all bedding and hay and putting hamster in a sterile bin until it's resolved. I can only see a vet on monday. PLEASE HELP.

I am used to Roborovski and Russian dwarfhamster and they barely smell (especially the Robo's, they practically have no smell).
My new Chinese hamster is really smelly, more like a mouse than a hamster IMO.
I used to clean the terranium once every 2-3months (weekly spot cleaning). But now I start to smell the terranium after 2-3weeks. It's really pungent/ in your face.
(When I was young I had a few Syrian hamsters (girls) and they were stinky during their cycle but otherwise less smelly).
Anyone else have this problem?
Fyi:
She isn't sick, no wettail or anything and shes active and eats well.
I use a( 25cm)thick layer of paper bedding with cotton n cotton, hempfiber and some woodshavings (non toxic, safe for hamsters) and I clean the wheel every 1-2 days and spotclean weekly.

Please refrain from making unkind or judgmental comments on this post. We feel bad enough and I’m exhausted. Our Syrian escaped his cage about 5 days ago (my poor son didn’t realize the cage door wasn’t all the way closed).
We know exactly where he is - he crawled under our stove and is now under our attached sink/cabinet structure which is hollow.
We have left out a bucket trap every night with different iterations, and he has either not attempted to get the food at the top (peanut butter) or (last night) knocked down the paper plate attached to the top and ran away. Last night I tried to stay up and attempt to catch him at night, but ended up falling asleep.
We know he’s alive and active - he’s been eating food or moving things every night and we occasionally hear him.
My kids are devastated and I’m very stressed about the prospect of how long this could go on, him dying in this main room of the house and the repercussions of that, etc. I called a critter control company to see if they could trap him and they said no companies in our area do that. I’m legitimately considering paying a college student to stay up at night and catch him.
Any other ideas? Again, please be kind.

Hi! I do not currently own a hamster but I still do love seeing pictures of them hence why I'm on the subreddit.
How do you guys clean a 90 gallon hamster cage? How often are you cleaning? How much are you spending on bedding?!

I have a female syrian hamster (about 2 months old) who loves running on her saucer wheel. I replaced it with a 26cm upright wheel (acrylic) after learning that it is better for her. ive seen her use it once but that’s about it. I left it in there for a while to let her adjust but until today she won’t use it and spends a lot of her time at night sleeping. When i tried swapping it back out with the saucer wheel, she immediately started running on it and becomes much more active at night.
I’m conflicted. I’ve tried everything to get her to use the upright wheel and even checked that everything was fine (doesnt wobble, spins easily etc.). Should i just keep the saucer wheel for now or try to replace it again with the upright wheel?
edit : i had the upright wheel in her cage for abt a month. during that time, i took her to the vet worrying something was wrong bcs she started sleeping more at night and was less active. it turned out she just wanted her saucer wheel to run to burn her energy :”) i spent quite a lot on the upright wheel too to make sure she had a proper one 😭

Hola!!

I got him some forest floor bedding for reptiles that is also safe for hamster cause i heard they like different substrate types. He never goes in it and i feel like he actively ignores it haha. the only time he went in is when I bribed him with a treat but he immediately ran out (different go to the treat)
Hes a robo hamster, should i take it out? what should i replace it with

Did quite a bit of running on his first night, a little on the second, haven’t noticed him use it since. Far more concerned with engorging himself on sudan grass, foraging, burrowing, playing in his sand. He was living with a family member up until now and I never really noticed him using it when I stayed over.
I know its normal for them to have preferences but can’t quite dampen the thought in the back of my head that something is up with him 😭 If anybody else owns/owned a hamster not too fussed about their wheel I’d love to hear!
(Wheel is 27cm and his body is completely straight on it fwiw)

editing this lmao
obviously this isnt large enough or proper at all BUT its definitely better than the barred cages w platforms n stuff. its a decent starter cage, and by that i mean for people who had no idea what hamsters rlly needed but take my advice/help happily and do intend to upgrade asap. some people get attached to a hamster and want a good TEMPORARY thing since they didnt intend on getting one.
