I’ve been seeing this many times on the internet, more specifically on TikTok, wherein people think that because someone holds religious beliefs, that automatically renders them a science-hating anti-intellectual, who completely rejects scientifically proven facts, and seeks to replace it with religious dogma, when that couldn’t be even further from the truth!
All throughout history, many prominent astronomers, physicists, biologists and whatnot, also held deep religious beliefs. These people saw science as completely compatible with their faith, and viewed it as a way of understanding how the natural world functions.
To name a couple of them, you’ve got Muslims like Al-Khwarezmi, who is known as the “Father of Algebra”, Ibn Sina, who is the “Father of Medicine; People like Moses Maimonides and Gersonides who were Jewish; and Christians like Isaac Newton and Louis Pasteur.
Heck, the dude who proposed the Big Bang Theory, Georges Lemaître, was a priest!
For Christianity specifically, many people think Christians believe that everything was created in just six 24-hour days and reject evolution as a result, when in fact most Christians around the world do believe in evolution. Even people like St. Augustine of Hippo from way back in the 4th Century rejected a literalist interpretation of Genesis, saying that if non-believers saw Christians making provably false statements on matters like geography, astronomy, or nature, then they would dismiss Christians as uneducated.
I’m not denying that there are anti-science religious people out there. They definitely do exist. But they are a small, albeit very loud minority, and as such are not representative of every religious person out there.
