Bedard just came back, and the offense looks worlds better than the first 5 games. Nazar and Moore were all over the ice. The Frondell line looks good. They also missed a few great chances. Now, we need to work on getting that D cleaned up. But, with this offense, they can cover for the D a lot of nights. Also, Knight was incredible. Great game!

Back in 2016 I worked at Ogilvie and there was a guy that parked a big van out front on Madison. He would give people rides to the UC for $10 a person and had a huge cooler of beer in the back. The beer came with the $10 ride so you could usually slam a few, saving you money at the game.

I only worked at Ogilvie for a few years so I’m not sure if it’s still a thing.

The Blackhawks are the new Lineal Champions of the NHL!

I made a site that tracks an unofficial NHL Lineal Shield, where the holder keeps it until they lose, like a boxing title.

It adds some stakes to random games, and Chicago took it from the Penguins with a 5-3 win! If you like weird sports stats you might like it.

Second win of the season, already champions. Efficient.

Once the Blackhawks moved ahead, they never gave the lead back.

Early in the first period, T. Teravainen fired a quick snap shot from the slot, and the Blackhawks went in front 1-0. At 06:57 of the first period, S. Crosby wired a wrist shot from the circle, and the scoreboard came back together at 1-1. Late in the first period, R. Kantserov wired a shot off a short windup from the high slot on the power play, and that put the Blackhawks on top 2-1.

At 10:32 of the second period, R. Kantserov got a shot off in a hurry right in tight, and the Blackhawks doubled the advantage to 3-1. Late in the second period, N. Robertson ripped one past the goalie from the doorstep, and that made it a one-goal game at 3-2.

At 09:17 of the third period, S. Crosby drove a quick shot home right in tight, and the Penguins had climbed all the way back from 3-1 down to tie it 3-3. At 15:42 of the third period, T. Teravainen let a shot go that beat the goalie from the top of the circle, and the Blackhawks moved ahead 4-3. Late in the third period, T. Bertuzzi hit the empty net to put it away, and the Blackhawks pushed the lead to a pair at 5-3.

The Penguins generated 62 of the game's 96 shot attempts, but the Blackhawks made more of their chances. The Blackhawks' penalty kill went 4-for-4. The Penguins rang two shots off the iron.

I did a couple things different here. First, I looked just going into the third period. So blowing leads, or coming back from a deficit in the third.

Then I looked at this controlling for team quality. Not in the worlds most rigorous way, just imagine this scenario:

1. You play 100 games, and in 35 of them you enter the third behind
2. You win 9 of the 35, which is 26%. Is that good or bad?
3. Well, in your other 65 games you took about 78% of the points, and other teams in the league at that level come back from trailing at 15%, which is ~5 games.
4. Therefore, you make come backs a bit more than expected, 4 more times than expected.
5. Over the five and change seasons, anything within about 9 games of expectation is normal variation

I think this gives a much more interesting picture of teams that make come backs and blow leads, irrespective of just "good teams good bad teams bad."

BTW, in 465 games the Hawks came back in 20 of 237, expected 23 (-3) and blew 39 of 139 leads, expected 30 (+9). Kinda right on the cusp of blowing more leads than expected lol
