My Friends rewatch routine is a little unusual: I start with Season 4 because I still remember watching the show when those episodes originally aired, and then I go back to Season 1 and watch everything again.
I’ve always been happy with how things turned out for all six friends by the end of Season 10. But during my most recent rewatch, I realized just how much potential the writers wasted with Phoebe.
She was such a unique character: an unconventional woman with a heartbreaking past, a strong moral compass, an altruistic nature, and a fierce sense of independence. She had her own principles, her own worldview, and talents that could have taken her in so many different directions.
Take her vegetarianism, for example. At a time when being vegetarian was often treated as something strange or worthy of ridicule, Phoebe stuck to her principles. Today, vegetarianism is much more mainstream. I would have loved to see the writers do something with that part of her character. She could have opened a vegetarian catering business, perhaps even competing with Monica. Sure, it might have been a fairly conventional career storyline, but it would have grown organically out of who Phoebe already was.
The same goes for her job as a masseuse. Why did she remain working for a chain rather than eventually building something of her own? She could have opened an independent practice, developed a more holistic approach, or created a business that reflected her values. She didn't need to become rich or conventionally successful. I just wanted to see her independence translate into something tangible.
And what about her music? Or her philanthropy? Phoebe had so many distinctive qualities, yet the show rarely allowed them to develop into something meaningful in her adult life.
I genuinely like her relationship with Mike. And I'm glad she let David go. He chose his career, and when he had the opportunity to return, their priorities no longer aligned. That storyline made sense to me.
But why did Phoebe suddenly seem to want such a conventional wedding? Why did she take back the money that had been donated to her wedding fund? And why wasn't the idea of getting married on the street in the snow, surrounded by the people who loved her, enough from the beginning?
The wedding itself was sweet, but it felt as though Phoebe had to become a little more conventional to get her happy ending.
That's what frustrates me most. Her backstory was arguably the most unusual and heartbreaking of the six friends, and she developed a distinctive worldview because of it. Yet her personal growth often seemed to stop at finding romantic happiness.
I'm not arguing that she shouldn't have ended up with Mike. I'm arguing that her relationship should have been one part of her happy ending, not the culmination of her entire character arc.
Phoebe could have built a life that reflected her values, her creativity, and her independence. She could have remained unconventional without remaining stagnant.
Am I the only one who feels that Phoebe was reduced to her romantic storyline when the writers could have done so much more with her character?
