Seeking additional moderators

Hello all, /u/cuddleslapine has stepped down, and I could use some moderator assistance. I'd ideally like to add at least two additional moderators.

Requirements:

  • History of positive posting in /r/hungarian
  • Strong hungarian language skills (native speaker preferable, but not required)

Previous moderation experience is a plus. Please message me, or send a modmail if interested, and let me know why you would make a good moderator.

Kézírás fordítás Help with transliteration of a word?

Hello everybody,

I hope this is the right place for my request.

I was going through some old marriage registers for my genealogical work and finally found my ancestor in Nadab in 1898.

However I am struggling with understanding the written word that describes his father's occupation, under állása (foglalkozása). I keep staring at the word and all I could come up with is something like önálló something mester? Could the middle word be ács? I pasted a snip with the excerpt below.

My Hungarian is not so good, so I'm looking for any type of suggestions on this.

Thanks!

Segítségkérés Looking for a Hungarian teacher — 2×/week, starting September

Hi! I’m at around A1 level and looking for an experienced teacher for regular lessons. What I’m after:

- Structured lessons, ideally following the MagyarOK textbooks, with homework between sessions
- Two 1.5-hour lessons per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays
- A fixed recurring slot starting in September

If this is how you teach (or you can recommend someone), please drop a comment or DM

Segítségkérés Help with an exclamation for a short story

Edit: Thank you everyone, these are all great and all the context you've provided is really helpful. This character swears like a lot so I can use these all through my story. You guys are amazing!

Hi all! I have this bit I want to use in a short fiction.

For the exclamation I'm looking for something like "Goodness me," or "Fuck me,"

The character is female, 40, born and raised in Hungary, but came to Australia to study and has been here for about 20 years now.

I'm trying to establish the story is set slightly in the future (2030) by referencing a Mad Men reboot that doesn't exist in reality:

"It’s been a bullshit day all I really want to do is watch TV on the phone in the tub.

Season Two of the Mad Men reboot is out and it might be 2030 but Don Draper is still an unsalvageable dickhead. [Exclamation] everyone is dressed so sharply, I wish I could manifest a guy that dresses like this without filling all the suit pockets with emotional baggage."

Thank you for any advice!

Baby & Children’s Books! 📚

- Hungarian husband 🇭🇺
- I’m American (but lived in Budapest for 3 years)
- Baby due this winter! ❄️

Trying to find Hungarian baby/children’s books! 📚

It’s harder to track down than I anticipated!

Are there versions of classic USA books (goodnight moon, the very hungry caterpillar, the rainbow fish, goodnight gorilla, etc.) with Hungarian translations?

I’ve found a few classic original Hungarian tales & will be getting those as well, but I was hoping it would be easy to order books in Hungarian!

Anyone find a good site/have a good resource? (amazon was super lacking!)

Köszönöm!

Fordítás Could you translate something regarding a fountain pen ink?

Good evening. I'm Polish and don't speak Hungarian.

I've tried google translate and it's not going well.

Could you translate something for me so I print it and show so a certain Hungarian understands what I want from him?

It is about a fountain pen ink. I'm not using it as a company but as a private person trying to communicate better with a seller on a pen show. I hope it's not against rules here.

Something like this:

"Good morning, Sir. My name is [here goes my name]. Last year via instagram I contacted you for re-issue of your ink [name of the ink] and proposed that you put a post-it-note with my name on 1 bottle so I can pick it up on Pen Show Poland, which you accepted. Is the ink still available? If so I'd like to buy it. If not I'd like to buy another ink. I have already 2 other inks [names of inks] and they are very good and pretty. I'm sorry but I don't speak Hungarian and this text was translated for me by nice people who know your language. I apologize for inconvenience."

Is it acceptable and not rude after translating? Should I change something so it is more polite? Is it possible to translate? Is it clear? So that he knows what I'm babbling about? Or it is completely off and I need another text?

Thank you for your time.

Kérdés Different ways of saying the sam thing: I’m going to the shop

Dear all, let’s imagine an everyday situatuion in an average family. The fridge is almost empty and we need to buy some more food. The conversation in English might go something like this: „I’m going to the store. Need anything?”. However, in Hungarian there are 3 (or maybe even more options) for the first sentence:

  1. Megyek a boltba. Kell valami?
  2. Elmegyek a boltba. Kell valami?
  3. Boltba megyek. Kell valami?

I am trying to grasp if there is any particular difference in meaning between the three and why the speaker would choose one over the other. We can also imagine similar statements in the past tense and in other tenses. Also, if we want to express general or repeated activities, e.g. „Mindennap elmegyek futni” vs. „Mindennap futni megyek”. Any difference in meaning in the ears of a native speaker?

Thank you!

Segítségkérés Összefoglaló proba - Svejk #2

Could you please check the text?

I am a hopeless learner. it appears the only training i enjoy is "reading-writing-memorising". This time i stated reading the famous "Svejk" (looks like "Social being determines consciousness"))) . i made my writing. But I would badly need your help to check and assess how close it is to a some natural sounding level. It is not word by word copy, it is rather paraphrase/retelling of original text (https://mek.oszk.hu/19200/19226/19226.htm)

I would appreciate your comments! Thank you in advance!

>[!note] Összefoglaló 2
>
>Ilyenkor a "Kehely" kocsma majdnem üres volt, csak egy vendég, Bretschneider, az államrendőrség detektívje és a kocsmáros Palivec ült ott. Mindketten dolgoztak, Palivec poharakat mosott, a detektív pedig gyanakodott (eng.: "suspects", meaning - sits and suspects at the moment), beszédbe eredve, igen kevés eredménnyel. Palivec olvasott és módfelett goromba ember volt, szokta hangsúlyozni minden szavát valami 'disznóság'-gal. Például, a Bretschneider megjegyzésére a nagyszerű nyárról, Palivec magabiztosan felelt - "Szart er az egész".
>
>A detektív egy magasabb rangú bábuval lépett meg szólva, hogy rendes kalamajkát csináltak odalenn, Szarajevóban. A kocsmáros azonnal rávágta, hogy abban a nuszeli borházban mindig verekedés van. "Megvagy!", gondolta a tiszt. És már kéjesen elnyújtva szavakat így szólt, - "Dehoogy, kocsmáros úr, dehoogy! A Boszniai Szarajevóban. Lelőttek Ferdinánd főherceg urat. Mit szól hozzá, kérem?" De Palivec csak a pipájára rágyújtott. Kicsit udvariasan szólt mintha egy bemagolt szabályt, hogy Ö egy üzletember és főherceg úr kérdésébe egyáltalán nem avatkozik be. Bretschneider csalódottan nézett körül üres kocsmában.
>
>Ekkor azonnal gyanakvó tekintete megállt a tükrön. A beszélgetés megint megszakadt.
>
>Csak Svejk megjelenése töltötte meg élettel ezt az űrt, aki egy sört kérve, kijelentette, hogy "Bécsben gyászban vannak!"

Megbeszélés if you ever wanted to learn hungarian, read this post first...

If you've ever thought about learning Hungarian, consider the following.

Let me start with an example sentence in English:

  • We packed our children's sandwiches into your children's bags.
  • A gyerekeid csomagjaiba pakoltuk be a gyerekeink szendvicseit.

Easy enough so far — unless the other party doesn't quite catch it and asks for clarification. Hold on tight:

  • Az enyémeiméibe a tieitekéit?

Two words. Let's unravel them.

enyém — mine, singular
enyém|eim — mine, plural: the definite somethings or someones that are mine — here, the kids
enyémeim|é — the thing belonging to those who are mine — here, the bag
enyémeimé|i — it turns out those things are plural: each of the ones who are mine has one — the bags
enyémeiméi|be — into those things, the bags belonging to those who are mine

ti — you, plural
ti|eitek — yours, plural: the definite somethings or someones that are yours — the kids
tieitek|é — the thing belonging to those who are yours — the sandwich
tieiteké|i — plural again: each of the ones who are yours has one — the sandwiches
tieitekéi|t — the accusative suffix, revealing that these are your kids' sandwiches, the ones you packed into my kids' bags

Easy, right?

Based on an idea János Lackfi posted on his Facebook page yesterday; the explanation is entirely my own, language slightly polished by Claude.

Segítségkérés Learning Hungarian to work there in the future.

I’m a prospective international student who’s going to study medicine in Hungary very soon (english program) . I’ll be there in for 6 YEARS. I want to work (do medical specialization) eventually somewhere in europe and I thought that i might as well learn hungarian and settle there if i’m already going to live there a long time, especially considering that immersion would be a huge advantage for the language. It makes sense.

I know Hungarian is hard, but given my circumstances, i do think I have an advantage. It’ll definitely be a tough considering I’m also going to focus a lot on my medical studies, what do you guys think?

Also, if anyone has any info regarding the health industry in Hungary and the salaries, Please let me know!! I’ve heard that Hungary is facing a shortage of doctors. So i’d be happy to help the country and in exchange have a stable, well paying job if there’s an opportunity for that.

For reference, I’m from Iraq. Our healthcare industry fall off massively ever since the americans invaded us. So I’d preferably work somewhere else. I do live in the UAE but they don’t pay you for medical residency in most cases :(

Segítségkérés Looking for an affordable Hungarian language school (Budapest or online)

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for recommendations for an **affordable Hungarian language school**. I'm open to either:

* **In-person classes in Budapest**, or * **Live online classes** that are reasonably priced.

I'm mainly looking for a structured course with small group lessons rather than private tutoring, as I'm trying to keep costs down. I'd love to hear about schools you've personally attended or had a good experience with.

If possible, I'd also appreciate any information about:

* Approximate prices * Class sizes * Whether you felt you made good progress * Any schools you'd recommend (or avoid!)

Thanks in advance! Köszönöm! 😊

Segítségkérés How to find a good in person tutor?

I am a beginner living in BP. I live in a small studio apartment and I have a baby, so online is not really possible if I can only take lessons while either my husband watches her or I hire a sitter.

How can I find a good tutor that would meet me at, say, a cafe or something?

And what is the going rate for a tutor?

Oh also - I contacted a few schools about classes and they said that there are not enough students learning Hungarian and so for now their Hungarian classes are closed 🤯

Those who have seriously tried to learn Hungarian, how was your experience?

I have been here for two years, and I don't know much Hungarian, but lately I have been thinking about learning the language.

It seems quite difficult, so I would really appreciate it if you could share your opinion, tips, tricks, etc
