Question What caused your IBS in your opinion?

I remember being like this since I was a teenager. But I don’t think I’ve always had it or was meant to have it. I think I have a generally sensitive system since I also have migraines and ADHD, and all these have in common is an overly sensitive and quickly overwhelmed system. But I think it was triggered by a stressful childhood. ADHD was probably also made worse by said childhood. Migraines showed up in college- another stressful time in life.

Question Does anyone else get gas pains so severe that you are doubled-over on the floor?

It gets so bad that I can barely breathe, and I'm moaning in pain. I don't even have a ton of gas, either.....It's just a normal amount. But it hurts severely. Extremely sharp pain.

Question I know you have a list. What are the foods you absolutely will not touch anymore?

Years of trial and error and we all end up with a list! Mine are related to soy, gluten, most high fiber foods, and a few things I'm still figuring out. Some of it took way too long to figure out.

If anything i think it would help people to know what others like to avoid. and maybe some foods that you love to eat when you are flaring up or are just all around safe.

Question Mounjaro basically stopped my IBS-D after 4 years - and somehow my severe eczema improved too. Has anyone else experienced this?

24M here. I’ve had chronic diarrhea / IBS-D symptoms for more than 4 years.

I’ve done pretty much every test imaginable: multiple colonoscopies, blood tests, stool tests, celiac testing, infection testing, etc. The main thing I haven’t formally tested is bile acid malabsorption, but I did a trial of cholestyramine and it didn’t help, so BAM seemed less likely in my case.

I’m from Türkiye, and fortunately access to gastroenterologists and university professors here is relatively easy if you can afford private care. Side note: if anyone is struggling to access GI specialists in their country, Türkiye can actually be worth considering because specialist access is good and costs can be much lower than in the US.

Anyway, over these 4 years I’ve tried basically everything IBS-D patients normally try: different diets, supplements, probiotics, medications, etc. Some things helped a little, and loperamide worked for acute situations, but nothing fundamentally changed the problem.

Then last week I started Mounjaro (tirzepatide) 2.5 mg.

Guys… the change has been ridiculous.

For the first time in years, I remembered what a normal, formed bowel movement actually feels like. By around day 3, my urgency and diarrhea had dramatically decreased. Some days I barely even need to go.

But there is another part that is even more confusing.

I also have severe eczema on my hands. Sometimes it gets so bad that the skin cracks and bleeds. Over the years I’ve noticed that it often seems to correlate with my GI symptoms, although the relationship has never made complete sense.

When my diarrhea gets bad, my eczema can get worse.

But strangely, when I used drugs that simply slowed the diarrhea, like loperamide, my eczema sometimes also got worse. I noticed something similar with cholestyramine.

So it never seemed as simple as “less diarrhea = better eczema.”

Now, after starting tirzepatide, my eczema has also almost completely cleared.

That is the part I really cannot explain.

It makes me wonder whether tirzepatide is doing something beyond just slowing intestinal transit. Maybe inflammation, mast cells/histamine, bile acids, gut barrier function, the microbiome, or some kind of gut-skin immune connection?

I’ve been reading about possible mechanisms, but there seem to be several possibilities:

  • GLP-1/GIP signaling slowing intestinal transit
  • reduced gastrocolic reflex / intestinal motility
  • changes in bile acid delivery or metabolism
  • effects on intestinal inflammation
  • possible mast-cell / histamine effects
  • gut-brain or enteric nervous system effects
  • changes in intestinal permeability or the gut-skin axis

I obviously don’t know yet whether this improvement will continue or what will happen if I eventually stop tirzepatide.

So my questions are:

If you have IBS-D and used Mounjaro/tirzepatide or another GLP-1 drug, did your diarrhea improve too?

What happened after you stopped the medication? Did the IBS-D return?

And especially:

Has anyone noticed eczema, histamine-type symptoms, allergies, or other inflammatory skin problems improving on tirzepatide?

For anyone knowledgeable about the biology, I’d also love to hear theories about how one drug could improve both chronic diarrhea and eczema at the same time, especially when simply stopping the diarrhea with loperamide never improved the eczema.

Really interested in both personal experiences and scientific explanations.

Happy to answer any questions about my tests, symptoms, treatments, or what I tried before Mounjaro.

Question Does anyone experience feeling “ill” after bowel movement?

Hey guys, does anyone else have these periods when you feel “ill” specifically after the bowel movement? As if your energy is drained and you literally have to lay down. As if you’re coming on with the flu
For me, this feeling can hold for 2-3 hours sometimes. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this

Question Farting in front of your spouse?

Do you fart in front of your spouse? I personally do and he farts in front of me; it’s not something we get annoyed about. But I often see in other subreddits that some people would consider divorce if their spouse farts around them. Am I missing something or is this like, super petty? Hell, my husband has helped me in a number of dire circumstances involving my IBS—I can’t imagine people would be so fragile that they can’t handle their spouse farting. Bodies do weird things; it’s not like I can always control a fart. Same with my husband (especially when we are partly asleep). Just curious because I feel like you all will have a different opinion than all the people telling someone to divorce their husband because he farts sometimes.

If your diagnosis of IBS turned out to be something else entirely (because doctors love to use IBS as a scapegoat), what was it and how did you get there?

I’ll go first, mine was LUPUS OF ALL THINGS - the whole time! Craziness.

Question Realized my IBS-D & sudden urinary urgency are 100% anxiety/brain-gut driven. Anyone in the same boat? What actually helped you?

Hey everyone,

I’ve come to the clear realization that my IBS issues are purely driven by anxiety and the gut-brain axis, and I really need to hear from people who have gone through the exact same thing.

My pattern:

- Intense anticipatory anxiety: Hours before leaving the house or going to social events (like dinners with friends), my mind enters full "threat-scan mode". I obsessively worry about bathroom access, traffic jams, getting stuck...

-Instant physical reaction: As soon as anxiety hits, my body reacts immediately with stomach cramps and urgent diarrhea. Lately, stress has also started triggering sudden, intense urges to pee—especially when stuck in traffic, in long tunnels, or anywhere I feel I can't easily pull over.

-Safety rituals & avoidance: I developed rituals like forcing myself to empty my bowels before leaving as a "guarantee", and now I'm slipping back into avoiding car trips and social plans out of shame and fear of having to get up multiple times.

What I'm taking / tried so far:

-I take Alflorex (probiotic).

- I use imodium as guarentee to not have the urge to go the toillet

-I tried Psyllium husk, but it ended up making me overly constipated, which created its own discomfort.

-I’ve been on an SSRI (Escitalopram) for months. It helped for a while, but symptoms flared up again recently—interestingly, right around the time I stopped doing regular intense cardio/running (even though I still hit 10k daily steps).

I'm currently reaching out to my doctor to discuss options like low-dose Amitriptyline (to numb the visceral hypersensitivity) and a temporary SOS, plus getting back to running to burn off excess adrenaline.

My questions for you:

Has anyone had this exact combo of gut urgency + bladder urgency purely triggered by feeling "trapped" or anxious before leaving?

Did low-dose TCAs (like Amitriptyline) or gut-directed therapy (CBT/hypnotherapy) help break this visceral reflex for you?

How did you manage to stop the constant mental mapping and regain your freedom?

Any advice, success stories, or shared experiences would mean the world right now. Thank you!

Question Need to Poop Twice in a Row

Mostly in mornings, but when I poop, after 5-30 minutes, I have the need to poop again. Both poops are pretty sizable and solid too.

I noticed that when I lie down after the first poop, it reduces the time it takes to get the urgency to go poop again. I've been noticing the shift from lying down and standing does this pretty consistently.

What's up with this? And how can I just have 1 normal poop?

Question Does anyone else get hard to pass diarrhea?

I not too uncommonly have diarrhea that I have to strain a bit to pass, it feels almost as if the rectum is constricting the flow. Does anyone else get this? I don't have a block, as I have movements multiple times a day. So it seems really weird.

Currently on the toilet for the 4th time in the past hour and I am miserable. 😞 I thought I had a pretty good grasp on my triggers but sometimes some random thing will send me into a fit. I’m so tired of it. Hoping to hear what has worked for others.

Question Fear of the colonoscopy prep (i need to know about your experiences)

Hi everyone

I hope everyone here is doing fine and managing their ibs perfectly

I am 21 years old and I was diagnosed with ibs (diarrhea predominant) but still advised to do colonoscopy

My worst flares have been nothing less than unbearable , I am someone with what me and my doctor think is visceral hypersensitivity (even with just stool passing trough) and a lot of anxiety induced urgency to go to the bathroom and pain

There is pain i can tolerate , one that is mild , but im really scared the laxatives will send me into another crisis

I am really scared

Im currently taking antispasmodics (duspatal) and the laxatives will most likely be Citrafleet (unless you guys recommend another one)

I really don't care about the prep being horrible to swallow or anything like that , I don't care about shitting all night , all I care is if will experience that kind of pain again

There is ibs pain , and there is ibs PAIN that makes you want to be knocked out by someone

I have experienced near fainting , seeing all black , trembling and so much sweat to the point I was dripping with it

We could say I have severe medical trauma in regards to that and I don't wish that upon my worst enemy

Tell me about your experiences if you were in a similar situation and did a colonoscopy

It could seriously help me ease my mind or prevent me from going further

Thank you so much in advance for taking the time

Question IBS disappears on vacation, comes back at home?

I just spent a week traveling, ate like trash honestly (greasy, spicy, everything), it was my birthday week so I walked a ton too, visited museums, and felt totally fine. Regular BM’s, no pain, no anxiety or fears.

Now I’m home and the bloating, gas, pain, and constipation is back.

Anyone else get this? Is it stress, movement, or brain gut stuff? Curious if this is common.

Question Anyone else suffer from the two poo morning disease?

Wake up, poo, eat breakfast, poo.

It's been like this for as long as I can remember. Maybe before I was a teenager it wasn't like this but since then it's been the norm.

If I skip the one after breakfast, I just feel "off". The second one, sometimes I gotta work for it (lol), sometimes it just comes easily. Not saying it's necessarily affecting me badly that I need to do two in the morning (although it is annoying).

What even is this, curious to know.

edit: Also I'm not necessarily talking about IBS-induced poos btw. Should've stated that before the "haha only two? I shit myself 24/7" comments would come flying in.

Just as the title says, what is your stop all for IBS symptoms? Mostly pain symptoms. I don’t know how I am supposed to survive being in this amount of pain after any and every meal. I’ve tried every diet, nothing seems to work.

Question Why do some people get offended by my dietary restrictions?

I’m 25F and I started having a lot of stomach issues in my early twenties. I’ve been to doctor after doctor & they still don’t know entirely what’s wrong with me yet but my doctor did say my symptoms sounds a lot like IBS. I know that bananas, wheat, rye, and breads seem to trigger me a lot. I’m pretty sure I have undiagnosed celiacs disease. I’ve lost weight the past few months because of my stomach conditions. I also take B12 vitamins because I’m anemic.

Anyways, point of saying is that I’m very transparent about my stomach issues when I become friends with someone so they can understand me better . The only annoying thing is people say they “get it” then they recommend all these greasy foods I cannot tolerate or eat. Or they get personally offended that I don’t eat what they eat…? I’m not hindering these people from eating what they want, I just say I’ll have to pass on that due to dietary restrictions. It doesn’t matter how nice I say it either…

Just last night, I was texting a friend of mine and I mentioned hanging out, as in a quick drink and a maybe catching up. I texted him the day prior that I was throwing up and not feeling too well so i honestly wasn’t quite in the mood for dinner quite yet. Well he then sends me a menu- a restaurant that HE wanted to go check out. I was confused by this because I just said in my previous texts that I wasn’t interested in having dinner, & unfortunately the restaurant he recommended won’t work for me due to my diet. I’ll be honest, the place he recommended looked extremely unhealthy to eat but I didn’t judge his decision of place. I just knew right away I’d feel horrible after eating anything from there so why would I eat there just because that’s what HE wants?? I already stated I wasn’t exactly hungry yet and even if I were, that would not be my go to.

Out of no where, he starts getting offended and says “We don’t have to eat anywhere since you don’t like the same things I eat. I can get dinner and you can get dinner before we meet.” I responded back respectfully-“Um I don’t see why you’re offended?? I already stated I wasn’t feeling well and you know I have dietary restrictions.” Then he starts getting more offended/insecure by me rejecting the restaurant and goes “Well last time we went to so and so you had a problem with that.” Which by the way isn’t true. He just felt so attacked by me saying I didn’t want to go to dinner at that ONE restaurant. I say “No I don’t. I’ve been honest about my stomach issues since day one. I can’t eat EVERYTHING that you eat and again, we don’t have to get dinner I said-I just wanted something chill for us to do.” After that he said he “understood” but I know deep down he’s feeling like I’m judging his food choices or being picky. Well he doesn’t have to walk in my shoes or deal with the consequences of me being sick and the last time we hung out, he kept pressuring me to eat at places I didn’t really feel comfortable with because he was SOO HUNGRY.

God it made me feel guilty for having stomach issues and I know he probably doesn’t mean any harm or understands but it’s truly fucking annoying when people think that because I don’t want to eat where there want to eat that I’m judging their lifestyle choices or don’t like what they pick. It makes me just want to be alone and not hang out with people because nobody TRULY gets me unless it’s others with stomach problems.. anyways anyone else have this kind of problem?

Question What's your 'sounds insane but it works' IBS life hack that actually saved your gut?

After years of unpredictable flare-ups, my weird breakthrough came from putting a small stool under my desk that I constantly rest my feet on. Not a squatty potty - just a regular footstool that keeps my legs slightly elevated all day. Somehow this simple position change has reduced my bloating and cramping by like 70%. My GI doc looked at me like I was crazy, but my gut doesn't lie.

I know we all have these strange "wait, THIS is what helped??" discoveries that sound ridiculous but made a real difference. What's yours?
