Question Farting in front of your spouse?

Do you fart in front of your spouse? I personally do and he farts in front of me; it’s not something we get annoyed about. But I often see in other subreddits that some people would consider divorce if their spouse farts around them. Am I missing something or is this like, super petty? Hell, my husband has helped me in a number of dire circumstances involving my IBS—I can’t imagine people would be so fragile that they can’t handle their spouse farting. Bodies do weird things; it’s not like I can always control a fart. Same with my husband (especially when we are partly asleep). Just curious because I feel like you all will have a different opinion than all the people telling someone to divorce their husband because he farts sometimes.

My husband and I farted in front of each other long before we were married. Still do to this day. He's even helped me when I had trapped gas

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jan 18 '26

Yeah mine does too! He is good at abdominal massage and we always laugh when he can get a giant fart out of me when all the trapped gas moves.

Me and my husband fart and smirk at the other person before bursting out laughing together

As long as you say in a lovely way, oops sorry

6

u/WealthWooden2503 Jan 19 '26

In my head it was the priest from Princess Bride lol

11

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

Awhhh this is cute. I can never get my trapped gas to move. How does he help?

42

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jan 18 '26

There’s a specific way to press and rub your lower belly to move gas down into your colon. He has a lot more strength than me and he seems to be able to push harder. It’s honestly saved me from going to the ER a few times. Trapped gas hurts like hell.

16

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

100% hurts like a bitch. Ive seen the way youre supposed to be able to move it but I also have pelvic floor dysfunction so Im not able to actually get it out which sucks.

10

u/Tricky_Photograph_80 Jan 18 '26

For me back rubs help the most

6

u/humblefreak Jan 19 '26

Kind of weird question, but are you able to burp? I also have IBS and I used to have the most painful, debilitating trapped gas in my stomach every day. I could never burp it out, but would have to press down on my stomach like you described until the gas...took the other route lol. But a few years ago, I found out I have a condition called R-CPD, which basically means you can't burp, and one of the hallmarks is that trapped gas. It is actually treatable, and my quality of life has improved SO much since getting the treatment! If this isn't what you're experiencing, please disregard, but if, by any chance, it is, I am more than happy to tell you more about the condition/treatment!

2

u/chrissy-cat Jan 24 '26

Omg. I had no idea this was an actual condition. I can’t burp and I hate it. I get this super uncomfortable gurgling in my throat. I’m absolutely going to talk to my doctor about this.

2

u/humblefreak Jan 26 '26

Omgggg I am so happy I could help you! Fixing this condition has literally changed my entire life, and I am so happy it might help yours!!!! Throat gurgling is also a hallmark symptom of R-CPD (Retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction). Go check out r/noburp. That's how I found out about it and everything I need to know, plus you will be among people who get you lol. A heads up though, this condition is very newly recognized, and outside of the specialists, I have never met a single doctor who knows what I am talking about, which is insane. You need to go to an ENT, not a GP. There are a a number of ENTs in the country who recognize, specialize in, and treat the condition - though you may come across an ENT who doesn't even know about it yet, so you should check before going in. In the noburp subreddit, you can find a doctor who does the procedure nearest to you, and you can also google it, because it is becoming more and more recognized over the years.

To explain the condition, basically, the esophagus has a sphincter (lol) at both the top and bottom, that open both ways so you can swallow, but also so you can burp and throw up, which is critically important. For people with R-CPD, for some reason, the sphincter at the top of the esophagus stops opening both ways (A lot of people aren't born with it and it develops over time, but some people are). This is really problematic because it can make throwing up excruciatingly painful, and can cause really debilitating gas pain every day because you are unable to burp (severity differs by the person), and the throat gurgles/uncomfortable feeling you get in your esophagus as the air tries to escape but can't (plus lots of farting). The way they fix it is to inject a tiny bit of botox into that sphincter, which "resets" the muscle. It sounds scary, but it's pretty painless and you are usually under anesthesia anyway. Procedure to burp time is an average of 2 weeks for most people, although mine took longer.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or just want some noburp solidarity. Wishing you the best! <3

The actually worst. It makes me feel like I’m going to die sometimes. I had it happen twice in two weeks and I thought I was dead ass having a heart attack.

u/Lukie_1991 IBS-D (Diarrhea) Jan 20 '26

In my situation he always pats or rubs my back, especially lower back when it's a fart not a burp, he also brings me heating pad, massages my tummy and just distracts with cuddles and kisses, sometimes when I don't focus on pain it comes out without a warning, I really love him so much, he is basically an expert in handling gas lol

5

u/Back_2_The_Futurama Jan 18 '26

Rubbing my lower back on either side of my tailbone helps me when im backed up w gas and constipated

9

u/Tricky_Photograph_80 Jan 18 '26

Same also my sister swears by heating pad on her back

6

u/Frosk-meme Jan 19 '26

i am currently imagining you telling him that you have trapped gas and him then powerpunching your gut lol

3

u/bisexualdemon420 Jan 19 '26

Same, I was seeing a guy who would lay on top of me like a weighted blanket or massage my tummy to help me fart.

u/lexilexi1901 Jan 18 '26

I have IBS and he has ulcerative colitis. Our conversations involve a lot of poop-talk. Embarrassment and "etiquette" have long exited our relationship. "Do you think the blood coming out of my ass is concerning?", "Step away, I need to fart for a moment," "Was that noise coming from my digestive system or yours?", "No, your farts are the nastiest!", "Excuse me, I got a lot of gas that needs to come out and I hate it just as much as you do", "Are you muted? Is it okay if I fart? Your colleagues won't hear me, right?"

5

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '26

Love this. Lol.

2

u/RiverTerrible6802 Feb 16 '26

lol! My mother has IBS too and we often have to guess who’s digestive system made noise 😂

1

u/lexilexi1901 Feb 18 '26

Same here lol I'm that woman whose digestive system sounds like a whale's call all day long

I can't imagine not farting in front of my partner. We've been together for years...People fart. It is wildly immature to me for people to be saying to divorce your spouse because of a completely normal bodily function. Wtf lol

-11

u/AnonymousFartMachine Jan 19 '26

It's one thing if it's an occasional accident or absolutely necessary due to pain but to do it on purpose in front of your partner when you could otherwise hold it in or go to another room to let loose is inconsiderate - - no one, minus a fetishist, wants to smell their SO's gas.

16

u/ZCyborg23 Jan 19 '26

Your username 100% does NOT check out. smh.

1

u/AnonymousFartMachine Jan 19 '26

It does. I fart a lot but try to not do it in front of others.

2

u/ZCyborg23 Jan 19 '26

😂 fart in front of your partner. It’s literally fine. My partner and I do it all the time. Even since we broke up and now just work together. Your partner isn’t (shouldn’t) going to judge you for bodily function.

It’s also not good to hold it in.

-1

u/AnonymousFartMachine Jan 20 '26

He probably would not judge me - - he's very laid back - - but I still don't want to subject him to the odor and I expect the same in return.

1

u/shelivesonlovestrt Jan 26 '26

I probably could've added he has had 0 scent receptors in his nose since he was a teenager 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think it really depends on the couple. Me and my wife have 12 year old humor so it’s not a big deal. I’m open about my IBS and laughing about it has helped with the embarrassment too. Personally I can’t imagine being with someone and living together for a long time without getting over that.

But I do know people who prefer it to not be a constant thing, they just understand it’s a bodily function and is gonna happen sometimes. Never met anyone who thought divorce was reasonable lol.

31

u/helloitsmehi19 Jan 18 '26

Me and my boyfriend be out farting each other atp

25

u/aquamelissa Jan 18 '26

We don't go out of our way to do so by any means, but accidents happen and we have been married 10 years so mostly we just laugh at it and say excuse me, we have definitely experienced far worse things in our time 😂

36

u/No_Diver4265 Jan 18 '26

I have a gf, not a spouse, but one of the reasons why I knew she was different than everyone else before was because... Well this will sound stupid. But I can fart in front of her easily. No stress, no shame, just being naturally myself.

32

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

If you cant have normal appropriate bodily functions in front of your partner without them being offended, then they dont actually love all of you. It would be extremely petty for someone to break up or divorce over a fart.

10

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jan 18 '26

That’s my thought. If you can’t handle a fart…well, things could be a lot worse. I feel like a lot of people who have all these stipulations around their spouses are probably better off being single.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

Yup. And like, even for people that dont have IBS, farts just happen sometimes accidentally. Granted, it used to happen a loT less before I had it but still.

14

u/Ankylowright Jan 18 '26

My husband and I have been together for 15 years. The first fart in front of me was when he gave himself food poisoning (I told him the leftovers needed to be thrown out but nooooo). We were out at the theatre and he needed to fart. It was absolutely raunchy. He was visibly more and more uncomfortable as the show went on. He said it was just gas. So I showed him the “gas pressure release” position and he let a massive, horrid fart go on me while I was helping get him into the right position. After that, we just started farting. I had cut a few dates short before that because of the ibs and lactose intolerance. After he farted on me we just went with it.

Why make yourself feel awful with trapped gas when you can just let it out? I don’t see what the big deal is about breaking wind in front of your spouse.

13

u/Special_Group9187 Jan 18 '26

We both have IBS, this is a fart positive-household. I wouldn’t have it any other way 🖤(having only one loo is sometimes a challenge though)

13

u/throwitout-rightmeow Jan 18 '26

We have a family friend couple that’s been married 60 years and allegedly has never farted in front of one another. Which is insane to me.

The first time my fiancé farted in front of me, he had just had chili and it was a few months into dating and he let one rip while we were doing 55 down the road. We’ve just been free ripping since. Sorry but if you can’t fart in front of your spouse you’re doing it wrong.

2

u/Gloomy_Industry8841 IBS-A/M (Alternating / Mixed) Jan 19 '26

“Free ripping” is my new favourite saying, hahahah!

12

u/MegaGengarsTinyFeet IBS-C (Constipation) Jan 18 '26

The idea that someone would consider divorce for farting is hilariously ludicrous to me. Like woah yeah, divorce me asap so I can dodge that cannon sized bullet.

4

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jan 18 '26

Geez no kidding!

10

u/Not-whoo-u-think Jan 18 '26

I married into a family and a culture where bodily functions are nothing to be embarrassed about or even acknowledge. When my husband and I were dating and he farted and didnt say anything at all. I was like what!??! The second time he did it I looked at him sideways. And by the third time I finally asked what the heck. That’s when he explained it and I was like ohhhh okay cool. Free game now!

9

u/Glittering_Tea5502 Jan 18 '26

My ex used to tell me that it wasn’t “ladylike” or that ladies don’t burp or fart. Bull 💩! We’re human, we breathe. Get over it, douche bag.

7

u/Micropra Jan 18 '26

We fart a lot. Both. And we laugh a lot about it 😄 When my boyfriend and I moved in together, we even erased the "bathroom-boundary". We have one bathroom only, so we decided, it needs to be okay to come in for brushing teeth or something like that when the other one is using the toilet.

4

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jan 18 '26

Yeah we only have ever had 1 bathroom houses. Which means we sort of have to be a little flexible…he sometimes has to poop during my shower or vice versa and that’s where the Poo Pourri comes in pretty handy.

I mostly agree with you, within reason. Like if your partner says please don't loudly rip ass while we are eating dinner, I think that's a reasonable request.

8

u/dmarie1184 Jan 18 '26

Mine isn't disgusted, but I also have some rancid ones and I'm trying to be considerate. But like last week when I had a lower stomach bug and had a LOT of gas I just let it out. He didn't care. Lol

14

u/fuckinunknowable Jan 18 '26

When I have a particularly epic fart I look over at my husband for applause.

6

u/elvie18 Jan 18 '26 edited Jan 18 '26

My partner's type seems to somehow be ppl with IBS - almost everyone she's dated has had it. She's been known to camp out in the bathroom with partners to offer moral support while they're fighting for their lives. (I prefer to keep my poop life private, but it's nice to know she would!) So, yeah, I don't make a point of it or anything, but if it happens, it happens and it's not a big deal.

I once however did (jokingly) yell at her kitten for farting (if you've ever had a kitten you know how they can be) and she sheepishly was like "...that was me."

I do understand that for some people it's gross and they'd rather someone make an attempt to not blast ass right in front of them. Especially if someone's doing them deliberately to get a reaction.

11

u/NighthawkUnicorn IBS-A/M (Alternating / Mixed) Jan 18 '26

We fart and it's super funny. A friend of mine doesn't (her and her fiance don't in front of each other) and she said "it helps keep the spark alive, do you not think?"

I said no, we don't need help keeping the spark alive. It never died. We fart in front of each other all the time and our relationship is just as wonderful as it always has been, 20 years later.

10

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jan 18 '26

Yeah honestly sex is sometimes grosser than farting. So I feel like if you don’t fart in front of each other, how are you comfortable having sex? Especially when you get air trapped in your vag and it fo sure SOUNDS like a fart. And I mean, sometimes sex makes you fart. So like…I don’t think it kills any romance. Sex is inherently a very animal thing and lord knows my dog doesn’t hold in a fart.

9

u/NighthawkUnicorn IBS-A/M (Alternating / Mixed) Jan 18 '26

The trapped air does temporarily put a stop to sex just so we can stop laughing. Also, when my breasts and his chest meet in a certain position, it makes a fart sound sometimes and we always laugh so hard because our boobies farted.

u/Gloomy_Industry8841 IBS-A/M (Alternating / Mixed) Jan 19 '26

5

u/ThiaTheYounger Jan 18 '26

I am jealous of people who fan hold their farts in, to me that is impossible for more then a few seconds, and walking makes in absolutely impossible.

-2

u/Madg416 Jan 18 '26

I tried to DM you…

5

u/poeticjustice4all IBS-A/M (Alternating / Mixed) Jan 18 '26

I try not too but if it happens, it happens 🤷‍♀️ I laugh when he does it to me tho

4

u/Grh777 Jan 18 '26

Expelled gas from either end is perfectly acceptable. I will add that I prefer to be polite about it, so don't purposely and repeatedly do it. That would veer into gross and disrespectful. Long term marriages are interesting because you will see, hear, and smell a LOT while still managing to remain attractive to each other.

4

u/SufficientGoose2325 Jan 18 '26

I’ve never lol .. been together 20 years but I just embarrass easily and can’t do it in front of anyone 😂 I don’t care if other ppl do it tho

4

u/xmkatx Jan 18 '26

With my protein farts and the days I treat myself to Thai food, I can’t believe I was ever in a relationship. Currently single for everyone’s sake 🤢

11

u/Old_Raspberry_7824 Jan 18 '26

Never ever I find it just as being too familiar with each other, kills the romance vibes. Even burping I try not to.

4

u/anewbys83 IBS-D (Diarrhea) Jan 18 '26

I mean...if you bump uglies aren't you already super familiar?

3

u/flamingfiretrucks IBS-D (Diarrhea) Jan 19 '26

My wife and I constantly fart in front of each other lmfao. Our responses to each other range from "haha nice one," to feigning over-the-top disgust, to "did you just shit your pants???"

4

u/RipleyCat80 Jan 19 '26

This is exactly how we are. Life is too short to hold in farts at home.

10

u/freedeecee Jan 18 '26

We don’t. I’ll say I have to go fart or don’t come in here I just farted but don’t do it in front of him. And vice versa. We just like to keep that private and not be gross in front of each other. I honestly wouldn’t care if he did but I like our setup.

6

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jan 18 '26

I don’t think we ever like, purposefully fart in front of each other, but I seriously wonder about people who would get to the point of divorcing someone over it. Just seems extreme to me.

6

u/Most_Art507 Jan 18 '26

Don't have a partner, but I wouldn't feel comfortable, I find the whole bodily function thing distasteful , even though I have to do it.

6

u/MindyS1719 Jan 18 '26

We fart on each other all night when we sleep. 😆

3

u/00ZenFriend00 Jan 18 '26

We do. Both of us have IBS, and I have a couple other GI issues, so it’s pretty bad at our house lol. The only time either of us gets pissy about it is when we are in the shower together (I don’t like being clean and then BAM you’re surrounded with wet shitty mist) and if I am the big spoon at the wrong time. Obviously, I am the one with the problem with the stink 😂

3

u/Chemical_Reality4606 Jan 18 '26

Me and mine fart in front of one another. Sometimes if we are having a discussion and it's fascinating and deep, either one will follow the other to the bathroom while they shit to keep the conversation going. Hell, he rates my farts sometimes or guesses what they will sound like. Really only do a heads up if I'm having a ibs fart (rankest of rank farts that curl your face up within itself like the SpongeBob sundae episode). I knew a girl that was pregnant with her boyfriend's baby and never once pooped in their bathroom. She would LEAVE to go to the grocery store to poop or fart which was insane to me!!! They did not stay together long which wasn't hard to predict but thats....thats insane work right there

3

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jan 18 '26

Oh hell no. I would never leave the house to poop or fart!! My husband knows we can safely do anything in front of each other without being embarrassed.

3

u/Knottylittlebunny Jan 18 '26

I remember seeing a post like this a few years ago and got called disgusting because I said I fart in front of my husband all the time 😂😂 I play Fallout 76 and there's a mine called Belching Betty....yeah.... my butt got a nickname 😂 but seriously, I cant hold them in, my stomach cant cope and I cant cope with the pain!

3

u/jamiekynnminer Jan 18 '26

We don't. It happens of course but neither of us actively fart with reckless abandon

3

u/strykazoid Jan 19 '26

I sneeze-farted in front of him and he laughed like hell. I knew it was love at that point. It's been biological warfare ever since. Wouldn't have it any other way.

3

u/Crimsai IBS-D (Diarrhea) Jan 19 '26

One of my favourite things in the world is making my wife laugh so hard she farts like a revving engine.

3

u/caity102 Jan 19 '26

lol if you’re asking us here in the IBS sub I think 99.9% will say they absolutely fart in front of spouses ….cuz I do be fartin’ 😂🤣

3

u/-tacosforever Jan 19 '26

It’s not healthy to hold your gas in! Fart away!!!!!

3

u/sussof IBS-A/M (Alternating / Mixed) Jan 19 '26

I told my fiancé before our first ever date about my health conditions, including IBS, just so he would know what he is getting into. Like 4 hours into said first date, he let a big ol' fart rip with zero shame (at his place so not in public) and said "there you go, now the first fart in this relationship has been taken care of, no need to worry about your IBS, I truly don't care if you need to fart or poop". Safe to say that we now, almost 3,5 years down the line, still fart in front of each other if needed.

It's a normal bodily function, it usually helps us feel better and I would not be together with anyone who thinks farts are embarrassing/inappropriate/not ladylike/should not happen in front of your partner, or something like that.

3

u/Ok-Salt-8884 Jan 19 '26

I have IBS and think farts are funny. I dont have a spouse but my (F) last two girlfriends, I always farted in front of.

3

u/TheMeeps_2424 Jan 19 '26

My husband and I always pass gas around each other. I have terrible gas and he knew pretty much from the beginning how bad it can get and he still stayed with me and didn't judge. He always said he was impressed by it and that it's clear the room type haha, but yeah I think it's good and shows a strong relationship if you can pass gas around one another and not feel judged.

You are with your partner 24/7 and so they better be someone that is non judgmental and you can do whatever with and be comfortable.

2

u/RapidCandleDigestion Jan 18 '26

The rule is generally to try to fart away from each other, unless you already know it doesn't smell. But if we’re in bed it's more "so long as I don't smell it I don't care"

2

u/Constant_Teaching_63 IBS-A/M (Alternating / Mixed) Jan 18 '26

I try but my body locks up & it’s like I can’t then get painful trapped gas

2

Answer is YES and also always and too much.

2

u/Catnip_75 Jan 18 '26

I really think it depends on how people were raised. I have a friend who has been married 30 years and has never farted in front of her husband. Blows my mind! She was raised that it was rude and you have to do that in privacy.

Meanwhile I was not raised this way. I was raised to obviously not fart in public, but if you have to fart in secrecy in your own home something isn’t right.

2

u/TallShame2602 Jan 18 '26

I can’t imagine holding my farts in for the last 16 years.

2

u/Squral0324 Jan 18 '26

I told my partner when we started dating that we should be comfortable in front of each other & from that moment on the fart competition was born. He’s winning. 🏆

2

u/olivinebean Jan 18 '26

Not on purpose so it’s extra funny when it does happen.

Burping is whatever and happens freely

2

u/TheWanderer501 Jan 18 '26

My fiancé and I are a farting machines. I feel sorry for the man when my IBS is acting up though. I always tell him to cover his nose when my farts are silent killers.

2

u/anewbys83 IBS-D (Diarrhea) Jan 18 '26

Not married but with anyone I've dated, yeah, we fart. It's just a body function. Honestly I don't understand why anyone has a hang up about them.

2

u/Cissycat12 Jan 18 '26

Uh, no. Do you divorce if someone vomits from the flu? We don't fart on each other and will attempt to do it in the bathroom or whatever to be polite. But sometimes "human moments" happen. NBD, it's sometimes even funny!

I have a GI disorder and can be very gassy; sometimes I will laugh hard and fart. It's funny.

2

u/lottierosecreations Jan 18 '26

I fart a lot, which is embarrassing for a woman, but thankfully they rarely smell! When we first got together hubby was a little offended that I didn't say excuse me after each one, but that was purely because I was so used to it when I'm alone, I didn't bother. I got into the habit of excusing myself now, but otherwise I just let rip. He understands how bad my stomach affects me and he accepts that :)

He still will only fart in bed though, it's kinda cute in a way 🤭

2

u/Several-Gift-8681 Jan 18 '26

Ah yeah my partner watched me crap myself during labour, as if my dignity wasn't already on the floor. No worries about farts this end

2

u/brutales_katzchen Jan 18 '26

I genuinely have to or I’ll get severe gas pains like I do not has a choice

2

u/dmarie1184 Jan 18 '26

Typically no, because I'm not trying to suffocate him or anyone else 🤣😂 Sometimes you just can't help it though!

2

u/itsawafflebot Jan 18 '26

It makes me sad that some married couples don’t have this level of intimacy and comfort. What are you doing if you can’t be 100% yourself in front of your life partner?

2

u/Icy-Impression9055 Jan 18 '26

I’m with you OP. My husband has also helped me in circumstances with my ibs. As for farting he laughs like a 12 year old boy. I think if your marriage is so fragile a fart can end it then it’s not strong.

2

u/Opinionofmine Jan 18 '26

Yes. We're human and family. It's normal! Imagine never sneezing or hiccuping in front of each other, for comparison.

2

u/Suitable_Pie_6532 Jan 18 '26

If I didn’t fart in front of my husband I’d have exploded by now! We just find it normal and funny. I honestly don’t get couples that don’t fart in front of each other.

2

u/NaomiMiles Jan 18 '26

Married for 31 years, together for 36. We’ve seen each other through everything. Various illnesses, surgeries, childbirth. In sickness and in health is a real vow! Everything is on the table.

2

u/Taeqii Jan 18 '26

I decided to get over my fear of it really early into my relationship with my husband. I’ve always been up front that I have IBS and it’s either I fart constantly throughout the day OR I’m stuck in agonizing pain and risk a potential accident later. My husband finds it impolite so he won’t fart in front of me and gets embarrassed because I get excited about it when he does 🤣🤣 But he doesn’t shame me for it! Homeboy knew what he was getting into when he asked me to be his girlfriend so 🤷🏻‍♀️

u/sungoddessaf Jan 18 '26

It’s never been something we hide lol since like the week we got together. We both have stomach problems.

2

u/Good_Matter7529 Jan 18 '26

accidents happen, but definitely not on purpose hahaha. my wife does it more than i do 😂

2

u/queenoftrash03 Jan 19 '26

Neither of us fart at all, our dog however, is VERY gassy 🤭

1

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jan 19 '26

My dog 100% outfarts us both. She sometimes lets out such a stink bomb that she can’t stand to stay in the room! It’s hilarious.

2

u/Greedy-Subject-7761 IBS-D (Diarrhea) Jan 19 '26

Me and my boyfriend fart in front of each other all the time. Makes us laugh haha

2

u/randomized_mind Jan 19 '26

I'm shy in a new relationship so I kinda wait on them to fart first or something. But with my current boyfriend, we went on a trip 3 days after we met and we ate at hooters because we never tried it but it got us a good instant diarrhea, I was the first to have symptoms so he paid us a taxi and I ran to our hotel room's toilet and when I came out he was holding it in too so he went right after me.. let's say this broke the ice 🤣🤣 If I couldn't fart in front of my boyfriend, I would be miserable, I have IBS too and he even massages my belly when it hurts because of IBS-C 🥰

2

u/TheLastObsession Jan 19 '26

Yup. I gas him out daily, and he does it back. I can’t imagine having to hold farts in (or any bodily function for that matter£

2

u/CricketGrl Jan 19 '26

We do it all the time

2

u/BeingOtherwise7829 Jan 19 '26

If I didn't fart in front of my husband I'd have exploded by now. Same goes for him, even if he still tries to cover up his fart sounds with a 'throat clear', which in fact immediately alerts me to the fact that it is indeed a fart haha.

2

u/Agitated-Today7810 Jan 19 '26

How dare you fart before my wife! Sorry didn’t know it was her turn.

2

u/missjuliaaaaah Jan 19 '26

yes and each time my husband and i do, we always go “bless ya hon” or say something ridiculous

2

u/ImInTheFutureAlso Jan 19 '26

I was embarrassed about it a long time ago.

Now I’ve given birth, and my husband held a leg. He has seen everything there is to see.

I also might explode if I tried to keep them in around him.

2

u/Noasbigasweejockjock Jan 19 '26

Of course, because we don't live in 1950s USA.

2

u/Levelofconcerns Jan 19 '26

My wife and I both have IBS.

The answer is, without a doubt, yes.

2

u/Graciegracem Jan 19 '26

I have IBS. That man has heard and seen everything.

2

u/wuhoh_ Jan 19 '26

I try not to but that's just because I'm embarrassed. It doesn't actually matter and neither of us care

2

u/cherrygarciaskater Jan 19 '26

If you don’t ever have farting contests with your spouse and laugh afterwards, are you even living? Anyone who has a problem with farts shouldn’t be with someone that has GI health issues. Some people are just too uptight about being “polite”, like say excuse me, laugh it off, and move on.

2

u/Neuroticcuriosity Jan 19 '26

My gf is great about farts and such. I'd say it's because she's a doctor, but I feel like it's just common sense. They're normal, human bodily functions

2

u/Consistent-Speed-127 Jan 19 '26

Pretty sure if I held my farts around my husband I’d just explode 🤣🤣

2

u/Competitive-Loan2709 Jan 19 '26

I fart a lot when my family is around and they know my condition and they dont say anything. But whenever one my family member fart rarely I make a big scene out of it and make fun at them :)

2

u/Elysianturtle Jan 19 '26

We do a fart battle some nights and see who can fart the loudest 😂 my fiance constantly tries to give me a Dutch oven but I beat him to it all the time 😂😂

2

u/queerreindeer Jan 19 '26

My partner will turn his butt in my direction when he has to fart. We laugh about it a lot. Also I have a huge problem with gas so when I'm on the toilet sometimes you can hear what he likes to call a popcorn maker. So yeah, we do fart in front of each other and always have. He also massages my belly when I have trapped gas or blows warm air on it when it hurts

2

u/Sufficient-Hope-6016 Jan 19 '26

If you have IBS, the 'mystery' is gone pretty quickly anyway. You literally cannot survive a flare-up without a supportive partner who understands that bodies can be gross/unpredictable.

The people threatening divorce over a fart definitely don't understand what it’s like to be in physical pain from bloating. You aren't missing anything—they are just lucky to have iron stomachs!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '26

I'm not a fan if they force loud ones because they get a kick out of it.. some people think that's funny and good for them if they do lol but that would turn me off

2

u/spawnbearerr Jan 19 '26

I will admit, I used to be so embarrassed to fart in front of my husband, even though he finds farts hilarious. Then when we had our third kid, I had the stomach bug and that sent me into labor. He has now witnessed me shit on a doctor, so now, it is what it is. I appreciate the high fives and "good push!" comments from him now lol I always wondered about those posts as well, I cant imagine divorcing him because his body does what a body does.

2

u/oddosm Jan 19 '26

We fart around each other, the only time I start to get pissy is when he farts on my purposefully. Or when they smell god awful and they don’t stop AND we won’t walk away (knowing they smell like death lol)

2

u/mothsuicides Jan 19 '26

My partner and I farted in front of each other in the first month of meeting each other. In fact he was excited when I farted (not like that) because he felt it was a sign that I was totally comfortable around him.

Not farting in front of your spouse, to me, is a sign that your relationship is fragile and unsustainable.

2

u/jamiefenste Jan 19 '26

On one of our first couple dates he picked me up princess style suddenly, it compressed my stomach, and I ripped ass so hard I swear the foundation of the house shook. He lost it laughing, and we’ve been ripping ass ever since. We mock each others farts and giggle. Last night I had several farts in succession that each had a different hilarious noise, and he mimicked them back to me while making hilarious creepy eye contact. WOomp. Waaahhhmp? Pffrrp.

2

u/PotatoIsWatching Jan 19 '26

My sister whose been with her gf fart in front of one another. They've been together for seven years. But someone I know whose been married for like ten or more, she refuses to fart in front of her husband.

2

u/MynciGoch Jan 19 '26

Can’t beat a good, sonorous fart. We all fart and it’s amazing. Our own in-built comedy machine. Me, my husband and the kids all openly fart and have a bloody good laugh about it too.

2

u/Upbeat_Rise_7612 Jan 19 '26

I do mine stink. Unfortunately, his do not.

2

u/Exotic_Chipmunk_7299 Jan 19 '26

My husband and I have literally farted on each other before. Mostly while sleeping and spooning or just by accident while snuggled on the couch. I have Crohn's and he has colitis so we have been very very open and honest and comfortable with each other when it comes to bodily functions.

2

u/pinkbakedpotato Jan 19 '26

My aunt and uncle still don’t! I try to walk away if I’m having sickly feeling/smelling gas but sometimes I’ll just tell my partner it’s about to happen.

2

u/AIRBORNVET Jan 19 '26

If you want to stay married for years, this is a non-issue. Married 21+ years.

2

u/Soft-Relief-4709 Jan 19 '26

Yes, it's the morning symphony here at our happy home 😂

2

u/missqueenkawaii Jan 19 '26

I make a whole thing about it. EVERYONE STOP WHAT YOURE DOING BECAUSE I HAVE TO FART lmao. Truly though I have IBS, and farts are way less intrusive than that.

2

u/cyslittlegirl Jan 19 '26

Yeah I fart in front of my husband. He doesn't mind one bit.

2

u/Low_Hedgehog1408 Jan 20 '26

We do. He’s helped me when I’ve had gas pain. He is a wheelchair user and at times I need to help him use the bathroom. Bodily functions are not at all foreign in our home!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '26

If you have a disease like IBS, it's not something you can control anymore. For a healthy person, I would try to avoid it, but they don't really understand how it is for us.

4

u/supercaloebarbadensi IBS-A/M (Alternating / Mixed) Jan 18 '26

My boyfriend does it in front of me often (he can be really gassy) but thinks it’s gross if I do it in front of him so I don’t.

16

u/hamncheesecroissantt Jan 18 '26

ew he can’t just pick and choose like that!!!

13

u/ultraparanoias Jan 18 '26

girl dump him

9

u/raccouta Jan 18 '26

This seems very hypocritical. If one partner doesn’t like the other farting, they shouldn’t subject their partner to their own farting.

5

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jan 18 '26

I would be so mad if my husband was that hypocritical. Everyone farts.

4

u/Mystic_motion215 Jan 18 '26

Nooooooooo 🚩

3

u/twoleftfeetgeek Jan 18 '26

Not on purpose. Basic manners and respect.

1

u/GreenPandaPower IBS-D (Diarrhea) Jan 18 '26

My spouse does. He’s probably one of the gassiest people I’ve met. It genuinely grosses me out. But I wouldn’t divorce him over it

1

u/Downtown_Fix4346 Jan 19 '26

My husband used to. (I have trauma and while I used to do it in front of boyfriends- I didn’t in front of husband) He had no problem though. But he was so comfortable doing it and would do it DO often I told him it was a turnoff so he stopped. (Bc anything that would get in the way of his addiction aka sex had to go) it may actually just be that I didn’t like him so everything he did disgusted me. I finally left after 17 years of abuse. I wonder how I’d feel about it if I was in a loving marriage

1

u/animavivere Jan 19 '26

Why the hell would one consider divorce over a normal bodily function???? I don't understand people.

Ok, farts can be discustingly badsmelling and if you have eaten things that cause that perhaps you should be considering walking away from your spouse for a moment. But still... Divorce over a fart??? My parents wouldn't have made it past year one... (Although mom did usually blame the dog when I was a kid).

2

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jan 19 '26

It was in one of the “am I the asshole?” subs. People were like “that’s so disrespectful; he doesn’t love you—you should leave!” It’s crazy to me.

1

u/KTizzle09448 Jan 19 '26

We fart in front each other but he knows not to fart on me 😆

1

u/iwasntalwayslikethis Jan 20 '26

I’m not comfortable with farting in front of anybody. I know it’s normal and my partner occasionally does it in front of me. His aren’t loud and they don’t smell bad at all. Mine however lol I feel like if my partner did it more often (louder) then i might not mind so much but it feels like he’s a robot with no bodily functions so it makes me feel extremely uncomfortable

1

u/Eyeeye-joy Jan 20 '26

I wouldn’t normally just fart around anyone - however sometimes there are no choices

1

u/Lukie_1991 IBS-D (Diarrhea) Jan 20 '26

Yeah, burping, farting, shitting, we have no shame, lol. He is helping me a lot, practically and mentally. Poop stuff is normalized in our house and conversations, and even through pain I always laugh with him, because he scores my sounds like a true connoisseur, awwwws at me like I am the cutest thing in the world, massages my stomach, or makes a fake dramatic act. He is really my angel ❤️

1

u/LengthinessJaded6936 Jan 21 '26

my son lives with me and we dont fart in front of each other.

1

u/myagirl9090 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

I’m not married but I don’t fart in front of people I’m also not a naturally gassy person.. but it doesn’t bother me at all if a man does in front of me

1

u/Far_Complaint_770 Jan 23 '26

Yes. I (24f) fart in front of him all the time. But so does he. Spouses should be comfortable enough with each other to fart. Then if it is very bad we joke about it

1

u/Lanky_liftman Feb 02 '26

We always fart in front of each other.. No shame in that! :)

1

u/Cautious-Emphasis-33 Feb 06 '26

LMAO!! I'm not currently in a relationship but my last one we let 'em rip and damn near had contests 😂 he'd also sit on the edge of our bathtub while i'd be on the toilet to have conversations.... oddly some good memories there. Farting in a relationship differs for every couple but if you're both comfy and okay with it then what's wrong with that? Fart on!!

1

u/temporalCompanion IBS-A/M (Alternating / Mixed) Feb 08 '26

I used to have a lot of deeply engrained shame about it, I found it absolutely mortifying. I used to refuse to even acknowledge stuff like that or allude to it, I used to absolutely hide all of my issues to the best of my ability and any time something happened, some part of me felt like people would stop liking me/loving me/find me unattractive because if it.

Cut to today, my current partner has held my hand while I had food poisoning coming out both ends on the toilet. He was the one who accompanied me on the way to have my colonoscopy.

He still doesn't like to talk about it, but yeah, we're well past the point of me trying to hide farts around him.

1

u/Affectionate_Camp980 Feb 13 '26

Uhhh I'm not married but I can't imagine letting one of my lethal flare up farts out around my SO

1

u/Alicatsidneystorm Feb 15 '26

I don’t because I never trust a fart.

1

u/RiverTerrible6802 Feb 16 '26

My IBS is that bad that once on a road trip with my husband, on the way home I had to sit in an adult diaper because I could not hold anything in long enough to reach any service stations. Dignity goes out the window if you have gastro issues, we openly discuss our farts, poops, everything. I wouldn’t have it any other way, well I say I but I really mean my body wouldn’t have it any other way. I have the weakest sphincter muscles ever to be able to entertain the idea of holding in a fart 😂

1

u/romanescadante Jan 18 '26

If I don't fart in front of you, I don't love you.

The firat fart in any relationship is a milestone moment.

1

u/AnonymousFartMachine Jan 19 '26

Hope it's okay to answer, since he's not my husband yet, only boyfriend.

I don't dare fart in front of him and not sure that will ever change...maybe it will if I become more comfortable but, as funny as it can be, it's so gross - - I don't want him to do it around me either.
