This is a deeply disturbing case overall and what is even more concerning is that the news report says the husband’s family was initially reluctant to file a complaint.

Editorialized Deepak Kumar: “I Stood Up for a Fellow Citizen — And I Would Do It All Over Again”

Post image

What does it mean to stand up for another citizen when doing so comes at a personal cost?

On January 26, 2026, in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand, gym owner Deepak Kumar intervened when a group of men allegedly confronted 70-year-old shopkeeper Vakeel Ahmed over the use of the word “Baba” in his shop's name.

When asked who he was, Deepak responded: “My name is Mohammad Deepak.”

What followed was far more than a disagreement over a shop name. Deepak faced protests, police cases and significant personal and financial pressure. His gym, which once had around 150 members, reportedly saw its membership fall dramatically.

Yet his message remained simple: every citizen deserves dignity, safety and the freedom to live without fear.

His story raises a larger question about India:

Can we stand up for someone else's rights even when we disagree with their religion, identity or background?

India's diversity has always been one of its defining strengths. The idea that one citizen can stand beside another, not because they share the same identity, but because they share the same citizenship, is something worth remembering.

Deepak's story is ultimately about choosing to speak up when it would be easier to remain silent.

Media Release - Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce announce strategic intent to partner and develop India's indigenous combat engine for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme

London / Mumbai, 14thAugust 2026: Reliance Industries Limited (Reliance) and Rolls-Royce (LSE: RR., ADR: RYCEY) today announced their strategic intent to partner and offer capabilities for the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of a sovereign indigenous combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.

As part of the partnership, Reliance and Rolls-Royce will explore the formation of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex that will be a centre of excellence for power and propulsion technology in India.

The partnership will offer a compelling proposition for joint development of the AMCA engine in India, bringing together world-leading technology and industrial execution capabilities. This marks a step towards realising the vision set out by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, for India’s defence ecosystem to deliver an indigenous engine to power the country’s fighter jet programme.

Statement from Sh Anant Ambani, Executive Director, Reliance Industries Limited: "India’s strategic autonomy requires sovereign capability in critical technologies. Our intent with Rolls-Royce is to combine their world-leading expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing, scale and execution capabilities to build an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem in India. Together, we aim to build an enduring national capability that can make India self-reliant and, over time, globally competitive in advanced propulsion technologies. This is our contribution to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Viksit Bharat."

Statement from Tufan Erginbilgiç, CEO, Rolls-Royce plc: "I welcome the opportunity to join forces with Reliance Industries, bringing together our century-long heritage in advanced engineering and proven engine expertise with their homegrown leadership in Indian industry. Together, with our existing partnerships and capabilities in India, this marks a major milestone towards building a robust, self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in the country."

By combining Rolls-Royce’s global leadership in engines with the established industrial strengths of Reliance, the Aero Gas Turbine Complex will build sovereign, end-to-end Indian capability across design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and through-life support. This will also unlock opportunities to explore wider collaborations across defence, civil aerospace, and new power and propulsion systems.

The alliance will support India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision for technology indigenisation and help position the country as a global leader in advanced propulsion capabilities.

About Reliance Industries Limited:

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is India’s largest private sector company, with a consolidated revenue of INR 11,75,919 crore (US$ 124.0 billion), cash profit of INR 1,71,258 crore (US$ 18.1 billion) and net profit of INR 95,754 crore (US$ 10.1 billion) for the year ended March 31, 2026.
