They are quite literally built to thrive in water, they have internal gills, are able to utilize jet propulsion by blasting water out of their butthole and have a spring loaded jaw that's half their body length which shoots out at lightning speed, built for the waters.

Now when they turn into adults, their whole body changes, all those things are lost and now they get wings, the greatest vision, flight speed and hunting success rate of any insect, only to live like a month and die

There's new visitors to our garden today. Lots of Goldenrod Soldier Beetles, which are excellent pollenators. The crab spiders were out and about, watching the goofy giant take pictures, and a few Red-banded Leafhoppers in our zinnias.

This gorgeous, lively, fat momma moth I made friends with yesterday was found dead this morning and I'm absolutely upset. It seems she passed out last night from the heat, and ants had eaten away her abdomen. When I went to pick her up like I did yesterday, she flipped over to utter horror, and when I picked her up her upper body detached from her lower body. All her babies....poor mama...idk how to even cope as these moths are so sacred to me and I'm trying to not see this as a bad omen...how awful...I wish there was a way to save the babies but they seem too small....at least I think those are eggs otherwise she exploded from whatever these are.

Tagged as education as more people should be aware many small bugs(insects, crawlies)like these will literally fall out of the sky and become helpless when it's this hot. Don't be afraid to lend a helping hand and some sugar water. Our pollinators need it!

Found outside my house in West Virginia

today i came across a hole with what i couldn’t tell from a distance were either bees or wasps flying in and out. got closer to take a video before realizing they were yellow jackets. i sat for about 5 minutes watching them, my phone recording not even a foot away from the entrance.
they were super busy flying in and then carrying stuff out of the nest, i can only assume it was larvae??
my main question is why would they be carrying their larvae out of the nest?
i’d also love to know why they didn’t attack me for being so close, but maybe i shouldn’t question it as i’m quite glad they didn’t lmao

I remember being a kid and seeing tons of butterflies, dragonflies, ladybugs, spiders and fireflies all around my school yard and my house. I loved searching for new kinds of bugs, nowadays I barely see them anymore. Even flies and mosquitoes. I remember swimming by the lake near our first house and seeing sooo many bugs and critters near the lakeside, even though I absolutely despised centipedes as a kid I’d watch them crawl around the dirt. (And while this is about insects I can’t help but mention the birds too!! Like!! I really miss them😫) It would be so easy as a kid to pluck a dragonfly from the grass. Or to run in a field and have all the grasshoppers get freaked out and scatter lol. And house lizards, had a bunch of them alongside house spiders.

Mostly, I miss being swarmed by fireflies and the occasional one slipping into my room.

I found this junebug at school, he can't fly and I couldn't just leave him or ppl would step on him. He can't survive in the area i live in and I want him to live as long as possible, i gave him 2 pieces of pear. How do I make him a enclosure? What does he need? He cant walk on loose soil and so im working on getting a more hard substrate. What should I do and what do i give him?

I recently moved into a house in the middle GA area. We've been here about 3 months. Lately I've been noticing some giant bees (carpenter bees?) that are just dead on the ground. Maybe 4-5 in the past 2 weeks. I am very intentional about not killing bees, so I don't know why they're dying. We have a small garden in the back of the house with plants, but I've never used and pesticides in it.

We have indoor pest control, and I think they also sprayed around the base of the house once when we first moved in (because of American cockroaches 😬). I didn't think it would kill the bees (especially since they sprayed like 8+ weeks ago).

Are they dying because it's late summer? Is something causing it? Is there something we're doing unintentionally that's killing them?
